European Directives
The guarantee of free move-ment of goods within theEuropean Community assu-mes elimination of any regu-latory differences betweenthe member states.European Directives set upcommon rules that are inclu-ded in the legislation of eachstate while contracditoryregulations are cancelled.
There are three main directi-ves :
• Low Voltage Directive73/23/EEC, amended byDirective 93/68/EEC con-cerning electrical equipmentfrom 50 to 1000 V a.c. andfrom 75 to 1500 V d.c.This specifies that compliancewith the requirements that issets out is acquired once theequipment conforms to thestandards harmonised atEuropean level: EN 60947-1and EN-60947-5-1 for limitswitches.
• Machine Directives –89/392/EEC, 91/368/EEC,93/44/EEC, 93/68/EEC –defining main safety andhealth requirements concer-ning design and manufactu-re of the machines and otherequipment including safetycomponents in EuropeanUnion countries.
• E l e c t r o m a g n e t i cCompatibility Directive89/336/EEC, amended byDirective 92/31/EEC andDirective 93/68/EEC con-cerning all electrical deviceslikely to create electroma-gnetic disturbances.
Signification of CE marking
CE marking must not beconfused with a qualitylabel.
CE marking placed on aproduct is proof of confor-mity with the EuropeanDevices concerning the pro-duct.

Double Insulation
Class II materials, accordingto IEC 536, are designedwith double insulation. Thismeasure consists in dou-
bling the functional insula-tion with an additional layerof insulation so as to elimi-nate the risk of electric
shock and thus not havingto protect elsewhere. Noconductive part of “doubleinsulated” material should
be connected to a protectiveconductor.
Positive Opening Operation
A control switch, with one ormore break-contact ele-ments, has a positive ope-ning operation when theswitch actuator ensures fullcontact opening of thebreak-contact. For the partof travel that separates thecontacts, there must be a
positive drive, with no resi-lient member (e.g. springs),between the moving con-tacts and the point of theactuator to which the actua-ting force is applied. Thepositive opening operationdoes not deal with N.O. con-tacts. Control switches with
positive opening operationmay be provided with eithersnap action or slow actioncontact elements. To useseveral contacts on thesame control switch withpositive opening operation,they must be electricallyseparated from each other, if
not, only one may be used.Every control switch withpositive opening operationmust be permanentlymarked on the outside withthe symbol:
