Dear Parents and Students:
This handbook is a vital part of understanding Lichen K-8 School programs,
academic information, and policies/procedures of our school. I urge you to take a few
minutes to carefully read this handbook as it goes into a lot of detail about our programs
and extremely important policies that both students and parents need to know. Some
things change from year to year, so please be sure to review. It’s also very helpful to keep
it in a convenient place for future reference.
On behalf of the entire Lichen team, I would invite you to visit our campus, attend
your child’s classroom, and become an active member in our PTA and parent volunteer
programs. We are very excited to have you and your child with us at Lichen K-8 School.
I’m looking forward to working with you to create a learning environment where your child
can reach his/her full potential.
Sincerely, Mrs. Alicia Legarda Principal

San Juan Unified School District Mission Statement:
Valuing diversity and excellence, the San Juan Unified School District’s mission is
to educate and inspire each student to succeed and responsibly contribute to a radically
evolving world by providing innovative, rigorous, student-focused instruction and programs
in a safe, caring, and collaborative learning community.
Character Education
In order to help create productive members of society who have strong personal
character, The San Juan Unified School District community identifies, models, and
integrates positive character traits, as well as develops means for assessment, to help our
students become contributing, responsible and caring members of a diverse community.
We believe knowing, caring about, and acting on such character traits will
contribute to the development of a humane and democratic society. Therefore, we as
schools, parents, and communities pledge to work together to develop and demonstrate
these character traits in each or our daily lives.
At Lichen we will be using Second Step Violence Prevention Program and Steps to
Respect Anti-Bullying Program on a weekly basis in each classroom. During morning
message, students will be reminded of positive character traits via the Daily Wisdom
announcement. In addition, it is Lichen’s goal to positively recognize appropriate school
behavior in various ways, such as, awards assemblies, Gotchas, and the Big Spin.

Lichen K-8 Mission Statement
Our mission at Lichen K-8 School is to develop an educational environment that
provides a positive learning experience, promotes academic success with standards
based instruction, and provides immediate intervention to meet the needs of all students.
Through our collaborative model, our staff and parent community are committed to
developing socially responsible citizens who are active, life-long learners.
Philosophy
It is important to establish a school environment that is safe, healthy, and
academically productive. Working together, the Lichen Staff developed a philosophy,
supported by rules, which attempts to satisfy these criteria and provide an atmosphere
conducive to learning. With the support of teachers, parents and students, our goals can
be realized. We live by our school motto, I can be safe, be respectful, and be responsible.
I can, I will succeed! Our policies and procedures reflect the belief that students can and
will make good choices while at school.
OUR GOALS FOR ALL STUDENTS
At Lichen K-8, we believe that students need to develop basic habits to help them become
successful, life-long learners. As they develop academically, we believe all students can
become:
CRITICAL THINKERS who use 21st century skills to reason, make decisions, and solve
complex problems in a variety of contexts.
COLLABORATIVE WORKERS who use effective leadership and group skills to develop
and manage interpersonal relationships within culturally and organizationally diverse
settings.
COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTORS who contribute their time, energies, and talents to
improving the welfare of others and the quality of life in their diverse communities.
EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATORS who share their thinking and feelings with others
through writing, speaking, and artistic performances.

School Programs
Early/Late Leveled Reading
All students in K through 3rd grade participate in early/late leveled reading. All
students are given initial assessments and scheduled in reduced class size reading
groups based on the results of these assessments. This allows teachers to target
10
students’ reading needs through the use of instructional leveled text and intervention
programs.
Reading Counts
All students in 3rd through 8th grade participate in Reading Counts. This program
motivates students to become better readers. In addition to reading great books, student
progress is monitored to help students meet grade level goals.
Zangle
Zangle is an online district-wide system where parents in 6th - 8th grade can monitor
their child’s daily attendance and academic progress. Log on to: www.sanjuan.edu/ and
go to the Parent Portal. Check in with the office to get started using this resource.
Second Step
This is a K-8 curriculum that helps students develop their coping skills in social
situations. Problem solving steps are taught, practiced and used throughout the school by
all staff when working with students.
Band
Students in 4th – 8th grade can participate in band. Band students meet after school
to practice and perform at least twice a year.
Choir
Students in 4th – 8th grade can participate in choir. Choir meets one day a week
after school to practice and perform at least twice a year.
Guitar
Students in 4th – 8th grade can participate in guitar providing we have the necessary
enrollment to proceed with this program. The class will meet one day per week after
school to practice and perform.
Awards Assemblies
Each trimester Lichen K-8 holds awards assemblies to celebrate the hard work our
students have done. Students can receive awards for academics, attendance, homework,
Reading Counts, and citizenship.
School Site Council (SSC)
11
The School Site Council is the parent voice in school governance. The SSC
function and requirements are mandated by the state. It is composed of parents, teachers
and the school principal. School improvement decisions are made through the School Site
Council. The SSC reviews test scores, provides ongoing analysis of Lichen’s educational
programs and monitors the budget. Members are elected for a two year term.
English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC)
Lichen has an active parent advisory committee that represents the needs of our
students who are acquiring English as a second language. Parents make
recommendations to our SSC designed to improve our school programs for these
students and their families.
Bridges After School Program for Grades K- 8
Bridges is an after school program funded by a grant to the San Juan Unified
School District. Bridges provides homework support, school enrichment activities and
positive role models for students.
Discovery Club
Discovery Club is a fee based before and after school program for K – 8th grade.
Discovery Club provides homework support, enrichment activities and positive role models
for students.

Policies and Procedures
Medication at School
Do not send any type of medication, including cough drops, to school with your
student. If your student is prescribed medication for a life threatening or a behavioral
condition by a physician, please have an adult bring the medication to the office. A
12
medical release form needs to be completed by the physician for the office to administer
any medication. This includes cough drops, topical lotions, cough syrup, eye drops,
Tylenol, etc. Parents can come to the office to administer medication to their child without
filling out a medical release form at any time.
Student Attendance
Regular attendance is essential to a child’s success in school. Except for illness
and extreme emergencies, students are expected to be at school each day.
We ask that you attempt to schedule doctor, dental and other necessary
appointments before or after school whenever possible. When children are ill, it is
obviously best that they stay at home where they can be cared for and do not expose
other children. Children should be fever free 24-hours before returning to school. If an
antibiotic is prescribed for strep, pink eye, etc., a child must have been on the medication
for 24-hours before returning to school and symptoms of illness should be gone.
Excused Absences
A student’s absence may be excused legally for the following reasons:
• Illness.
• Medical, dental or chiropractic appointments.
• Attendance at funeral services for a member of the immediate family.
Tardies
Students’ arriving late to school is a high level concern. It is the
parent/guardians legal responsibility to ensure their student arrives to school on time. The
staff has been working to minimize classroom interruptions and to utilize the instructional
day to its fullest. When a student arrives late, instruction is interrupted while the teacher
13
explains the lesson to the student. Excessive tardiness has a detrimental effect on
children’s learning and we ask that you cooperate by doing all you can to see that your
child arrives at school on time. Parents will be notified if their child has an excessive
number of tardies. Students who are tardy need to obtain a tardy slip from the school
office before going to class.
Consequences may be assigned to students for excessive number of tardies.
VISITING SCHOOL
We welcome and encourage you to visit Lichen School. If you would like to visit, we
ask that you call the school ahead of time to make an appointment. All parents must
check in with the office and wear a visitor’s badge before visiting the classroom or
dropping off a lunch. This requirement is for the safety and protection of all children as it
ensures that only people with legitimate business are on our campus.
Parent/Teacher conferences are not possible during instructional times. We do
encourage open communication and request that you schedule conferences before or
after school.

to ensure the safety of our students. Supervision will not be provided prior to these times. START TIME ARRIVAL TIME IF EATING BREAKFAST 7:50 a.m. 7:35 a.m. 7:30 a.m. EARLY DISMISSAL
Students attending school for the entire day is crucial to learning. However, we
recognize the need to schedule appointments during the school day. When possible,
please schedule these appointments as early or late as possible to allow for maximum
time in class. A student arriving late to class or being called out of class early not only
disrupts his/her learning, but also the learning of others.
Parents who wish to pick their child up prior to the end of the instructional day will
need to come to the office and sign their student out from the office. The child will be
called to the office. Only adults listed on the emergency card will be allowed to pick up
your child. Please be prepared to show ID when picking up your student.
DAILY SCHOOL ATTENDANCE IS NOT A MATTER OF CHOICE, IT IS THE LAW. If your child is absent for any reason, you must call each day to clear the absence. The Lichen School attendance line is:
979-8440 If you do not have or cannot get to a phone, your child must have a note from you clearing his/her absence on the day he/she returns to school. If your child is absent for a medical appointment, a doctor’s excuse/note must be brought in to the office when the child returns.
Short Term Independent Study
Parents may request an Independent Study contract for five or more days for reasons
other than illness. We ask that parents make the request for an Independent Study
contract through the school office at least one week prior to the anticipated absence.
This advance notice is necessary so the classroom teacher has time to determine the
15
assignments the student will be required to complete. If adequate notice is not given, the
classroom teacher/administration can decline to prepare the contract.
The work required by the contract must be turned in the first day following the
Independent Study ―end date‖ to receive credit. Students who successfully complete the
Independent Study contract will not be recorded as absent for the days stipulated in the
contract.
Although the Independent Study contract does provide appropriate assignments for
the student to complete it is important to understand that the contract cannot duplicate the
level of learning that the student would experience if he/she were in the classroom.
Independent Study is a privilege, not a right. If a student’s classroom work,
attendance or behavior does not meet the school standard, an Independent Study
Contract may be denied.
Breakfast and Lunch Program
Breakfast and lunch are served daily in our cafeteria. The cost of a breakfast is
$1.75 ($2.00 for grades 7-8) and the cost of a lunch, including milk, is $2.75 ($3.25 for
grades 7-8). Students who bring their own lunch may purchase milk for $.40. Free or
reduced breakfasts and lunches are available to students of qualifying families. Forms for
16
free or reduced meals are mailed home over the summer and are available at any time in
the school office. Meal applications need to be filled out each year (one per family). Menu
information is sent home at the beginning of each month or as soon as the office receives
the forms.
We recommend that students eating cafeteria food place money on account in
order to eliminate the problem of losing or forgetting their breakfast/lunch money. It is a
good idea for students who bring their own lunch to place a few dollars on account in the
event that they forget their lunch. The policy of Food Services is to provide one meal only
for students who do not have a lunch or money to purchase lunch. No further full meals
(only fruit and milk) will be given to the student until repayment is made. You may add
money to your child’s account at www.myschoolbucks.com
Students are not allowed to leave campus during lunch, unless a parent/guardian
signs the student out during the lunch period.
Field Trips
All students have the right to attend school field trips. Field trips are an extension
of the classroom learning environment in a less structured setting. Therefore, it is
important that students participating in field trips conduct themselves in an appropriate
manner which will ensure their safety and the safety of others. Students’ behavior must
17
be appropriate to the setting to allow all participating the opportunity to see, hear, and
learn.
During a field trip a student will be expected to follow school rules. If a student’s
behavior endangers his/her safety or the safety of others or requires a significant amount
of teacher/chaperone time which would endanger others, the student will be removed from
the site of the field trip. Either the parent will be called to come to the site and take the
child home or the principal/vice-principal will come to the site and take the child back to
school.
One indicator of a student’s ability to behave on a field trip is the citizenship
exhibited at school. Therefore, a student may be excluded from a field trip if prior
behavior has been inappropriate and causes a concern for (1) the safety of others, or for
(2) the amount of teacher/chaperone time that would be required to monitor such
behavior.
Corrective Consequences
When inappropriate student behavior occurs, Lichen has a policy of first working
with students to change their behavior, which includes using logical and natural
consequences as a means of addressing student misconduct. We focus on positive
reinforcement such as verbal praise, Gotcha’s that can be used at our school store,
18
special earned activity time and celebrations. When corrective feedback is not effective,
we use progressive discipline steps, which include verbal warnings, classroom time-out,
loss of recess/detention/Friday School 6th -8th grades only, parent phone calls, citation,
and/or a referral to the office, which may result in on-site suspension or home suspension.
Any issued citation must be signed by the parent and returned to the teacher the next day.
When repeated interventions are not effective, a parent conference is held and a behavior
support plan implemented.
The San Juan Unified School District GROUNDS FOR SUSPENSION AND
EXPULSION information is outlined in the District’s Parent Handbook, which is handed
out the first week of school. Please review this information with your child.
The San Juan Unified School District Parent Handbook also includes
additional information on district policies. Please read through it carefully.

Student Accident and Athletic Insurance
Only $15 for Entire Year
Parents/Guardians: San Juan Unified School District does not provide student and athletic accident insurance coverage for students. While the District takes appropriate measures to protect your child from injury, accidents can and do occur even in safe environments. Several affordable insurance coverage plans are available through Student Insurance, an independent insurance company. Proof of medical insurance is required if your child participates in interscholastic sports (including cheerleading, mascots, band, drill team, etc.) and dental coverage is suggested. Tackle football coverage must be purchased as a separate policy. Even if you currently have medical insurance, you may want to purchase the student accident insurance to cover your private insurance deductible. The application, description of benefits and claim forms can be accessed online: Student Insurance Website:
1. Log onto www.studentinsuranceagency.com 2. Click on ―K-12 Plans‖ on left side 3. Under ―K-12‖, click on ―√‖ next to ―Benefits― & choose an option (also available in Spanish)

CELL PHONES ON CAMPUS
23
Current state law allows students to bring cell phones to schools, with parental
permission, for use during an emergency. District policy permits the use of cell phones
for emergencies only and their presence on school grounds will be allowed as long as
students follow these guidelines:
1. Cell phones are to be turned off while on school grounds except for extreme
emergencies. Extreme emergencies refer to life threatening situations where the
school does not have other communication options available.
2. Cell phones are to be kept out of sight at all times while on the school campus.
This includes before and after school. If a student fails to abide by these rules,
he/she will lose the right to carry a cell phone with him/her during school
hours. Parents will be notified to pick up their student’s cell phone in the
office. If the parent states that a phone is required for after school reasons,
the phone will be left in the office during school hours.
3. Cell phones are not to be used to call parents, friends, or relatives during the
school day.
4. The school is not responsible for cell phones brought to school and will not be liable
for damaged, destroyed or lost cell phones.
