SIU’s Open Access Policy for
faculty scholarship requires
public availability of all peer-
reviewed manuscripts by SIU
faculty that have been ac-
cepted in scholarly journals.
To that end, SIU libraries
maintain an Institutional
Repository (IR) called
OpenSIUC.
Advantages of OpenSIUC
Increases discoverability
by boosting search en-
gine results for articles.
Authors have more con-
trol over the metadata

The Unsung Heroes of the Little Free Library
Murphysboro High School
students enrolled in MHS
Construction 2 class were
spotlighted in March on a
local news channel as
“Unsung Heroes.” Their out-
standing job at designing and
building a Little Free Library
for the Medical Resource
Center was highlighted in the
piece.
The students came together
as a class and as friends to
create the library. Their
teamwork and creative tal-
ents have provided an amaz-
ing Little Free Library for the
School of Medicine and
Southern Illinois University’s
community to share a book
and take a book. The piece

Highlighted Resources: Screencast App Smackdown
We’ve tried out a few screencasting apps to
see how they measure up. All could be used
to make short, quick instructional videos.
Educreations Interactive Whiteboard (iOS) -
Virtual whiteboard with video and voice re-
cording.
Cost: Basic app is free. Buy premium for
more features.
Pros:
Record your voice, handwriting and draw-
ings.
Snap a photo from within the app or import
images from your photos, Dropbox, Google
Drive, or the Web. Paid version can import
docs and maps.
Animate images and text by tapping and
dragging while recording.
Cons: Rudimentary video editing only lets
you trim from the end.
Bottom Line: Easy to use, good for creating
presentations on the fly, but get your narra-
tion right on the first try due to limited edit-
ing.
Doceri (iOS)- Interactive whiteboard and
screencast recorder available for iPad.
Cost: All app features are free. (Desktop pro-
gram-- which allows your device to project,
control, and annotate your computer screen-
- costs money)
Pros:
Includes a variety of background colors &
designs.
Import your own pictures.
Lots of drawing tools - shapes, text, and a
variety of pen colors and thickness.
Save video as mp4, send to YouTube, or
save slides as PDFs.
Cons:
Version for Windows devices doesn’t in-
clude screen recording.
Not available for Android.
Bottom Line: Fantastic, free option for iOS
users, but Android users will need to find a
different option.
Lensoo Create (Android) - Virtual white-
board with video and voice recording.
Cost: Basic app is free. Buy premium for
more features.
Pros:
Includes a variety of background colors &
designs
Import your own pictures.

variety of pen colors and thickness.
Free version allows 15 minutes of record-
ing. Pay for premium for longer videos,
more background images, and shapes.
Can upload video to lensoo.com or save
slides as PDFs.
Cons:
Can’t download your video.
Bottom Line: Free whiteboard app with
robust recording features, which is a uni-
corn in the Android marketplace, but we
wish it were possible to download your final
product.
The library is searching
for home brewers,
sourdough and yogurt
cultivators, and other
