Comments Although this script shows some awareness of how camera shots are used to create suspense in Vertigo, it is inadequate overall. For example, it fails to illustrate clearly how the car scenes in the film are deployed to achieve this effect. Likewise, its commentary on the use of lighting in the sanatorium, where Scottie is treated, only manages to demonstrate how the feelings of loneliness and emptiness are evoked, but not suspense. The technique of non-diegetic sound highlighted in the opening paragraph is not developed at all in the subsequent part of the essay.

Comments The question invites discussion on whether characters in the set texts often have illusions about life. This script, however, chooses to focus on the deceptions characters practise on each other, and provides a largely descriptive account of their misunderstandings and disguises. In-depth analysis of characters’ misperceptions about life, e.g. their own feelings, other people’ actions, and events is lacking.

Comments

(i) Each poem is discussed individually with no attempt to connect them in relation to the

question. It is also an unbalanced discussion. A vague assertion is made about the animals in (A) “presented as the cycle of nature” followed by extensive quoting of almost the entire text. Poem (B) seems to be misunderstood, with animals described as “dangerous”.

(ii) The candidate seems to understand repetition and tries to account, albeit unconvincingly, for its use. The extensive quoting is unnecessary.

(iii) This answer is off the point and there is a misunderstanding of the type of animal baboons are.

Comments (i) This response does not directly address the question and uses language which is difficult to

understand at times. It is mostly background information and simply paraphrases the action and dialogue.

(ii) This is a slightly stronger answer as it points out the night setting and silence in evoking a secretive atmosphere. However, it mistakenly claims that the location is “not common” to the children.
