BOARD OF DIRECTORS
CHELMSFORD BUSINESS ASSOCIATION • CHELMSFORD, MA 01824 • 978-250-3858 • www.chelmsfordbusiness.org Fall 2008
Autumn has arrived and the CBA is back to work aftera long summer. The Fourth of July Parade was a greatsuccess (the wet morning gave way to sunny skies).Over 80 separate floats, marchers and vehicles ofalmost every description participated. Thanks to allof the parade volunteers for all your hard work.
The CBA Golf Social was held on September 15, 2008.It was a perfect day for golf. Bill Gilet and Mark Duffyworked long and hard to put the event together andI want to thank them both for a job well done again.Did I mention the winner of the long drivecompetition?
Tax classification has once again been a controversialtopic. Working to keep taxes fair for business is amain concern of the CBA. To be clear, changing thetax base for business does not raise another dollarfor the Town. Chelmsford’s revenues will remain thesame regardless of the division of taxes. The real
answer to improving the Town’s finances lies not intaxing businesses over and above residences, butbuilding a larger and more productive business taxbase. Building a business base means more revenuefor the Town. In order to grow a larger business baseChelmsford must offer a climate conducive tobusiness, a fair tax rate and initiatives that will attractnew businesses. The Town’s decision to hire aneconomic development coordinator was a step in theright direction. Streamlining the permit process isanother excellent draw to business. Providing abrochure to make business aware of the benefits oflocating in Chelmsford should be acted upon andimplemented. Working on developing a largerbusiness base is a sure way to ease the financialburden on Chelmsford and its residents.
Plans for our Holiday Social are already under way. It’s a fun filled evening that is the highlight of the CBAcalendar. Many members use the Social to networkand renew contacts. As always it will be a greatevening and I hope all will attend. The Social will beheld on December 4, 2008 at the Radisson Hotel andSuites, Chelmsford festivities begin at 6:30. The partyis just one benefit of membership in the CBA andshould not be missed.
Thanks for your time.

Three Simple Ways to Avoid LawsuitsClarify and Manage Expectations by Hanna Hasl-Kelchner
While many small businesses are concerned with cutting costs on a day-to-day basis, few think about protectingthemselves against one of the most dangerous threats to their budgets and to their companies as a whole—alegal problem. Business lawsuits are costly (sometimes resulting in bankruptcy), time consuming, andemotionally draining. Here are some tips to help you avoid three of the most common small business traps.
Establish employment policies. Good employmentpolicies are one of the best business investments you canmake. They help employees know what's expected of them.Unfortunately, even the simplest policy statements are prettyboring. You can make them more user friendly by breathing lifeinto them with periodic training that helps employees apply thepolicies to their everyday work. When applied consistently, policies mitigate misunderstandings and perceptions ofunfairness that can escalate into legal claims.
Protect your brand. Your customers recognize yourbusiness by its name and your brand names. These namessymbolize your company's distinctiveness—its style, service, and products. Imagine how disruptive it would be if someoneelse used those names without your permission. You canprotect these valuable assets through trademarks.
Negotiate good contracts. Good contracts, like goodemployment policies, are invaluable for clarifying and managingexpectations between you, your customers, and suppliers andfor avoiding surprises. Negotiating warranties, limitations ofliability, and termination provisions you can live with will savemuch unpleasantness later on if the deal crumbles. And if thedeal is a success, the contracting process will have served tobuild trust and provide a foundation for continued growth.
Nothing will make your business bulletproof in today'slitigious environment. But these three simple tips will go a longway toward protecting your business and allowing you to useyour profits to grow your business, instead of defending it in acourt of law.
Hanna Hasl-Kelchner is author of The Business Guide to LegalLiteracy: What Every Manager Needs to Know About the Law.
