MAKING SMART USE OF SOUNDS & SPELLING PATTERNS
In this lesson plan we are going to help children hear the sounds in words by developing phonemic awareness, and then exploring sound/symbol relationships and
spelling patterns. There are three strategies we will be going over; Developing Phonemic Awareness, Exploring Sounds and Discovering
Spelling Patterns.

STRATEGY 1: DEVELOPING PHONEMIC AWARENESS
We are going to be selecting words that we are used to from books, rhymes, songs and so on, and discover together how knowing one word can help with the
recognition or writing of others, just by changing the beginning letters.

EXAMPLE: FROM READING THIS RHYME, WRITE THE WORDS THAT SOUND THE SAME ON A CHART
Twinkle, twinkle, little star,
How I wonder what you are.
Up above the world so high,
Like a diamond in the sky.
When the blazing sun is gone,
When the nothing shines upon,
Then you show your little light,
Twinkle, twinkle, all the night.
Then the traveller in the dark,
Thanks you for your tiny spark,

STRATEGY 2: EXPLORING SOUNDSWe are going to
discover how different sounds can
be written by rereading a familiar book. We are then going to list on a
chart; for example words with a /k/ sound: kite, cat,
school, bike, truck, cake, back. We are
going to identify the letter(s) that
represent this sound.
For example:• Kite, bike, cake• Cat, Cake• School, Christine• Truck, back

STRATEGY 3: DISCOVER SPELLING PATTERNSWe will now be thinking about what a
word looks like in a useful spelling strategy, we are going to explore some common spelling patterns together by rereading a familiar book, selecting a particular spelling pattern to look for.
For example, look for and list words with ea, such as: bead, bread, dead, instead, great, read, treat, break

EXAMPLE:
Identify and underline the ea spelling pattern in each word, say the words, and group them according to their pronunciation such as:
Bead, read, treat
Bread, dead, instead, read
Great, break
Select one of the words and show how knowing it can help with the spelling of other words in that word family. For example, great: greater, greatest, greatly
