Identifying situations in life that illustrate the "zero pair" concept will help students build a strong foundation leading up to adding and subtracting integers. During Ghost Tamers!, Tina and Liz receive a call from Mrs. Crink who needs their help taming some ghosts at her inn. Tina and Liz arrive at Blackwater Inn and explain to Mrs. Crink that the glowing ghosts she’s experiencing are electrically charged plasma fields. As Ghost Tamers, they use their devices to neutralize the charge of the fields (bringing them to a zero charge), which calms the energy. Tina and Liz set about the Inn, finding the "ghosts" so they can neutralize them with their devices. The data provided are the device readings, showing the charge emitted by each ghostly energy.

Gladys: Students will build upon their knowledge of positive and negative rational numbers, previously learned in 6.NS.C.5 and 6.NS.C.6a.

Kevin: Ask students to brainstorm situations in which opposite quantities combine to make 0 (elevator going up or down a number of floors; filling a cup halfway with the faucet all the way on hot and then halfway with the faucet all the way on cold; etc.).

Megan: When possible; connect these situations with the equation p + (-p) = 0. An elevator going up 5 floors then down 5 floors can be represented by 5 + (-5) = 0.

GHOST TAMERS!At what charges should the Ghost Tamers set their devices?Tina and Liz received a call from Frohan’s Funeral Home, asking for help with a ghost problem. Excited to have another job, they hurry over to Frohan’s.

Mr. Frohan greets them and shows them to the basement where the ghost activity is occurring. Tina and Liz explain to Mr. Frohan that they “tame ghosts” by neutralizing (or zeroing out) the charge that is being given off by the “ghost.”

As Mr. Frohan leaves them to their work, Tina and Liz immediately begin to pick up charged energies on their devices. Knowing they must zap each energy with an opposite charge, they get to work.

Help Tina and Liz set their devices to the correct charge.

How might this standard appear on a test?

Using what you know about opposites and zero pairs, determine whether each sum would be positive, negative, or zero.

The goal of this card game is to make a sum of 0 with three cards. For each hand of cards, fi ll in values for the two other cards that would make 0.

Roger left his house and walked 4.5 miles directly north. He then walked 4.5 miles directly south. At this point, how many miles was Roger from his house?

The low temperature one day was -4° Celsius. The high temperature that day was 4° Celsius. What was the diff erence between the low and high temperature?

On the fi rst play of the game, the Pigeons football team ran for 16 yards. On the second play of the game, the quarterback got sacked for a loss of 16 yards. How many yards did the Pigeons get on the fi rst two plays?
