Lesson OverviewSo far, we have progressed in dividing

fractions by fractions, even with uncommondenominators.

Today, we will focus on creating our Oword problems involving dividing fracfractions!!

This will help us understand difficult problems that we will begin to work onweek.

Measurement DivisionThe first step to creating our own word problem, is deciding if we want to make a measurementdivision word problem, or a partitive division word problem. Today, we will focus onmeasurement division.

Remember that with measurement division, we are trying to find out how many groups we canmake. For example:

Lets start with the following problem:1

    2 1

    8

    A) How many ______________ are in ______________ (think of the recent quiz)?

Draw a Model 3 minutesThe second step requires us to draw a model of the problem.

    A) Draw a model to represent1

Solve it and Choose a Unit! 2minutesWhat is the answer to

    1

    2

    1

    8?

After solving this question, we need to create a unit for the word problem we will soon create. A unitis any measurement that there is one of. Here are examples of units:

    Miles

    Pounds

    Hours

    Meters

    Feet

    Ounces

In measurement division, the divisor and the dividend must be the SAME unit .

Create a Story Situation!! 6minutesThe final step is to create our own story problem! A story problem includes all of the information thatwe need to solve it, but it MUST be:

    Realistic

    Short

    Make sense

    Be very clear

It may take some time for you to find a story situation that works well, but this is where your groupcomes in!

Using our divisor and dividend, here is an example: Mr. E has1

2 pound of cherries. It takes

cherries to make one cherry cookie. How many cherry cookies can Mr. E make?

Make your OWN story problem. You may not use the same type of situation I used.

4 teaspoon of honey left to make green tea. If it takes

    1

2 teaspoon of honey toone cup of green tea, how many cups of green tea can Mr. E make?

Create Your Own! 5 minutesWorking in your groups, using the same dividend and divisor, create your own story problem. You may use the same units, but your situation must be your own. You can try using other units(cups, yards, miles, etc) if you wish.

What did we learn? How did we extend our work with division with fractions in this lesson?

What was your biggest challenge in creating a story problem involving division withfractions?
