Vibrant worship—

Pilgrim is a prayerful place

of vibrant worship where the

gospel of Jesus Christ is

faithfully proclaimed in a

family-oriented,

intergenerational

atmosphere. Varied

worship expressions come

together to provide a rich

response to the love of

Christ in our lives.

Bible-centered growth

and teaching—

Pilgrim is purposeful about

nurturing faith and spiritual

growth in all who enter its

doors as well as for those

who are not able to enter.

Pilgrim is a place where, led

by the Holy Spirit, all

children, youth, and adults

measure of the stature of

Nurturing congregational

care—

Pilgrim members strive to

nurturing care to one

another. Pilgrim is a family;

care for one another is

evidenced in all aspects of

congregational life. Pilgrim

is a place of health and

healing where people of all

ages find help for their life

journeys.

Intentional outreach

and evangelism—

the abundant life that they

have received through faith

in Christ and intentionally

reach out to people of all

ages with the love of

Christ beginning with

South Hill, Washington, and

moving outward to the ends

of the earth through local,

national, and world-wide

outreach.

The purpose of Pilgrim Lutheran

Church is to glorify God by fostering:

come with the mission to set people free from

slavery to sin and death, and free for love. By

and, fully divine (see

John 1) who has come to us.

Admittedly, that is a lot to wrap our minds

statements help us to understand the

metaphor. We may not be able to adequately

define what this all means, or to put it into

words, but we get a picture of what it means to

have God in our midst.

Consider the following quotation that I am told

is making the rounds in social media;

I AM loved. I AM a loser. I AM getting better and

better. I AM .

This Lent we have the opportunity to imagine

John shapes our reality. And then we are also

shapes the reality of those we come in contact

with family, friends, co-workers, class-mates,

the clerk at the check-out stand and all the other

strangers we meet.

We have examples three weeks in a row with the

reading is about someone who has an encounter

with Jesus which shapes their reality. And

following that re-shaping encounter they will

shape the reality of those around them.

This week (Feb. 11), the man born blind (Ch.9) is

confronted with questions and doubt, could this

really be the man who was and has been blind

from birth and we have seen each day? He

contained in his claiming this identity. He is the

man who was blind. He is the man who is no

longer blind because of his encounter with Jesus.

He therefore is the man who has been healed.

Last week (2/4), the Samaritan woman Jesus

who was married 5 times and currently living

with a man not her husband. Now, after meeting

Jesus and has found the Messiah, the one who

she has a new identity and a

new reality flowing from meeting Jesus the giver

of living water.

The week before that (1/28), Nicodemus comes

Pharisee, a religious leader, a leader of the

him and the opportunity to say, after

The invitation this Lent is for you to reflect on

reality. How are you different for knowing Jesus

who is the way, the truth, and the life?

Again, Lenten services are Wednesdays,

beginning with Ash Wednesday, February 14th.

We begin at 5:45 PM with a soup supper,

followed by a brief worship service at 6:30 PM,

Greetings from JAM!

continues to make me smile every

week! Thanks you for faithfully

bringing your children to our

education hour. Their insight and

perspective on life teaches me

something every week! We continue to

and grow in our faith and love towards

God and one another.

We just recently had our second

thanks to Sarah Lieu who passionately

led a group of kids to sew weighted

lap pads for the occupational therapy

class at Firgrove Elementary! And

thanks to Nancy Scott, Carol

Jurgensen, and Byrna Klavano for

bringing their sewing machines and

helping the kids learn to sew! It was a

wonderful time learning how to care

for others.

To help educate the kids on what

are many needs and options for local,

national, and international missions.

This will be an ongoing discussion. We

also discussed ways that kids can be

wonderful way that you can help your

child at home to develop a passion for

serving others. I challenge them to do

one daily service project every day for

a week and map it out on a calendar.

Some ideas for projects are:

Do a chore for a brother or sister

without them knowing.

Write a note to someone telling them

how much you appreciate them.

Smile at 3 random people today,

make their day brighter.

Secretly clean out your Mom or

Make a plate of treats for someone,

place it on their doorstep and run!

Ask a parent what you can do to help

them today, and then do it without

complaining.

On Sunday, do everything you can to

make your morning peaceful and

spiritual. Be kind to your siblings.

Get yourself ready for church

without complaints, and help

younger siblings get ready. Just do

what YOU can to make it run

smoothly.

Write a note to your teacher(s): tell

them you appreciate the time and

effort they put in on your behalf.

Listen during class and participate in

the discussion.

Pick up any trash you see lying on

the ground for an entire day.

Prepare a meal for your family.

Do your homework without being

asked and if you finish in time, set

the table for dinner.

Visit a neighbor (not just a friend,

but someone who might seem

lonely).

Draw a picture for someone you care

about. Leave it on their pillow for

them to find.

Clean your room without being

asked.

Write a letter to someone.

Do something nice for someone you

Read to a younger brother or sister.

Speak kindly all day long. No

complaining allowed.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday (Feb

14th this year) and lasts for 40 days

(not counting Sundays) up until Easter.

It mimics the period of time that Jesus

was praying and fasting in the

wilderness. During this time, we have

an opportunity to seek out and grow

Jesus did for us. The goal is to grow

closer to God during this time, but it

Here are a few individual and family

ideas during Lent:

Give one compliment every day to

someone.

For every meal and snack you eat,

contribute a nickel to be donated to

offering or a charity of your choice.

Spend five minutes each morning or

night in prayer.

Read the Bible each day as a family.

Post one Bible verse on the mirror in

your bathroom each day.

Make a prayer chain on 40 slips of

paper, link them together and rip

one off each morning of Lent,

praying for that need.

Pick a service activity to participate

in as a family.

Have each family member write down

one blessing a day and compile them

Looking ahead, we will celebrate

CONFIRMATION on May 20. Please

come join us as our Confirmands

share their faith with our

congregation! GRADUATION SUNDAY

will be on June 10, as we will celebrate

our high school and college grads!

And VBS, always a big week, will be

July 9-12!

We are looking for a VBS Director or

Co-Director. If you are interested in

learning more about this role, please

see me and I will give you the scoop!

We have so many faithful, wonderful

volunteers who make this happen, and

I promise you this role is very

rewarding!!!

I always welcome any suggestions and

offers to volunteer! May you and your

A heart-

for your generous Christmas gifts. We

are blessed to serve such loving and

generous people. We look forward to a

wonderful year of caring and service

together with you in 2018.

In His grace, Pastor Steve Schumacher,

Jeff Hobson, Rachelle Lessard, Melody

Rath, and Ruth Rhodes

Thank you so much to my Pilgrim Family, for all

your thoughts, prayers, and messages you sent

me while I was in the hospital. I know that God

and all of the prayer put me on the road to

recovery. The doctors said it will just take time

to completely heal.

I would like to thank Pastor Steve for coming by

the hospital to see me. It brightened my day!

Also, thank you to the women of KPPC for the beautiful prayer

shawl. It was really appreciated!

Thank you again, and I feel very lucky to have my family and friends.

Dear Pilgrims,

Your kind and generous spirit continues to bless

our family through yet another trial. Your concern,

your kind words, and most importantly your

prayers mean so much to us as Nathan fights

esophageal cancer. Thanks for the gifts of soup

and Christmas treats (you know who you are!) and

for the cards which appear unexpectedly to

Carole King Fundraiser to Benefit Firgrove a

Huge Success! On Saturday, February 3rd, our talented vocalists and

musicians filled the church with beautiful songs written by

Firgrove. The evening was a huge success, bringing in

$3,222! This money will be used specifically to serve the

Firgrove Community, helping to meet needs that might

otherwise go unmet.

Thank you to everyone who helped make the night a

success: the gifted musicians and vocalists, our

entertaining emcees, everyone who donated items for the

silent auction, all who baked yummy treats, the sweet Girl Scouts who served

beverages and cleared tables and all who were able to be in attendance it

was such a fun evening!

7th Annual Weekend of Service! The church has left the building! Mark your calendars and get ready to serve

Weekend of Service May 5th and 6th. We

are currently in the process of planning

service projects so, if there is a project

or organization you would like to see us

serve, please contact Rachelle Lessard

with your ideas. Thank you!

2017 Holiday Basket Program Thanks to the generous hearts of Pilgrim, we were able to provide 25 families

in the community with food for a week at Thanksgiving and food for a week

so humbling to hear the stories of some of the people coming in many need

help for the first time and are so grateful for the helping hand. Thank you for

being His hands and feet in our community!

Lunch at New Hope Resource Center Pilgrim continues to serve lunch on the third Monday of

each month at the New Hope Resource Center. There

appears to be a need for more help, so we are currently

considering expanding to serving twice each month.

The center is a welcoming place for homeless adults,

where they help to connect them with resources to help

them out of homelessness. Lunch is served on Mondays, Wednesdays,

Fridays and Saturdays. If you have ever considered joining us to help serve, it

is a humbling and rewarding experience come join us!
