As rain showers finally grace the Southwest with their presence,

the time for the National Reining Horse Association Futurity quickly approach-es. The top trainers in the world are putting the finish-ing touches on their 3-year-olds and hitting the road for Oklahoma City.

The NRHA Futurity, held for the first time in 1966 at Columbus, Ohio, has attracted talent from nations all around the globe. Since 1988, it has seen 32,953 entries and paid out close to $26 million in total, with more than $24 mil-lion in Futurity money alone. Since 1998, the total purse has cleared $1 million every year.

Each year, young horses with historic blueblood cours-ing through their veins arrive at the Futurity, hoping to improve their sire’s black type. With 22 stallions whose off-

spring have earned at least $1 million, premier and proven bloodlines carry a lot of weight.

The NRHA Futurity’s No. 1 producer is the only Equi-Stat Elite $8 Million Reining Sire, Topsail Whiz (Topsail Cody x Jeanie Whiz Bar x Cee Red), bred by Tom and Susan McBeath, Union, Miss. His 119 Futurity offspring have accumulated more than $1.6 million in earnings at the prestigious event according to Equi-Stat.

Topsail Whiz, owned by Bob Loomis Quarter Horses Inc. until his death in 2009, was a NRHA Futurity performer as well. In 1990, Loomis guided the stallion to a third-place win and a $38,075 payout.

Equi-Stat Elite $6 Million Reining Sire Hollywood Dun It (Hollywood Jac 86 x Blossom Berry x Dun Berry) fathered 167 NRHA Futurity perform-ers. In total, they have earned

more than $1.5 million at the event, securing their sire’s spot as the No. 2 leading stallion.

Bred by Clifford and Gwen Steif, Woodstock, Ill., Hollywood Dun It made his first mark on the NRHA Futurity when he was named Reserve Champion at the event in 1986. His foals have been continuing his legacy ever since.

The great names in rein-ing, like top Open NRHA Futurity rider Shawn Flarida and top Non-Pro rider Mandy McCutcheon, are always guar-anteed to present the best stock in the business when they show.

Every NRHA Futurity is an opportunity for classic blood-lines to reach new heights and offspring earnings records to soar. At the State Fair Arena in Oklahoma City from Nov. 24-Dec. 3, history is sure to be made. ––KP

Equi-Stat, a division of Cowboy Publishing Group and Quarter Horse News, compiles and

researches money earned within equine performance events and then enters this information into its database for use in producing statisti-cal reports. These performance events include cutting, reining, reined cow horse as well as barrel racing, pleasure horse and ranch versatil-ity. Equi-Stat’s statistical information helps performance horse events present a more accurate picture of their particular event to entrants, breeders, owners and potential sponsors. For more information about Equi-Stat and what it might do for you, visit equistat.com.

Denim And Curls (Pretty Boy Boon x Lenas Glamour Doll x Lena My Way), was the high seller at The

Marketplace at Ardmore Sale – bring-ing an impressive $30,000. Consigned by Sunny White, the 2004 mare had $46,154 in National Cutting Horse Association earnings to her credit. The pretty and tal-ented blue roan was purchased by Cynthia Harr from West Virginia.

Sale day saw good weather in Ardmore, Okla., and a great group of buyers, according to Marketplace owner Susie Reed, who was pleased all the way around with the Nov. 5 sale results.

“We had a real good crowd and a really good set of cattle,” Reed said. “So the fin-ished horses were really able to get shown. Broke horses sold really well, and there was a big demand for finished cutting and rein-ing horses, as well as broke geldings.”

The top 10 averaged $13,900; the top 20 averaged $9,750; and the overall average was $3,732.

The next Marketplace at Ardmore Sale is scheduled for Jan. 7, 2012, at the Hardy Murphy Coliseum. For more information call 580-276-4830 or see www.themarketplaceatardmore.com. —JS

FYI... Basic Grooming Gear

The Marketplace at Ardmore’s

High Seller

Grooming – some people really consider the time spent cleaning up their horses a pleasure; other horsemen shudder at the pros-pect and streamline the process as much as possible. Either way, grooming a horse to some extent is necessary when you ride him.

A multitude of goods is available to help horsemen brush, curry, shampoo, rinse, condition, shear, trim, primp, and polish their horses. However, if you’re just starting out with horses, or if pulled manes and super-shiny haircoats aren’t high on your prior-ity list, you can manage well enough with only a basic grooming kit. Although not everyone’s list of “must-have” grooming tools is exactly alike, most do include five common, core items: a brush, curry, mane and tail comb, hoof pick and sweat scraper.

There are hundreds of available variations among these few items; the choices can be overwhelming. But, on the plus-side, basic grooming tools are not big-ticket items. If you’re not satisfied with your initial selection, making a change is an affordable choice. However, it does pay to shop around for grooming supplies. That’s the case, to some extent, with some grooming supplies, particularly brushes, which come in a wide selection.

The high seller was Denims And Curls, who brought the top bid of $30,000. —Photo by Dawn Baxstrom

Items to consider for your grooming box

• Sponges• Groomingmitts• Shampoo• Maneandtailconditioner• Haircoatpolish• Braidbinders• Boteggknife• Hoofcleaningbrush• Hoofdressingapplicator• Thinningshears• Clippers

TipsBrushes: Soft bristles work best for the bonier areas of the body; harder bristles are appro-priate for the fleshier parts of the body. The stiffer the bristle and the more sensitive the horse, the more care is needed when applying pressure.

Curry: Horses are more sensitive to less flex-ible steel versions. Steel is too inflexible for use on the bonier parts of the body. All ver-sions are good for helping shed long hair. The flexible, rubber versions are also good for massaging a horse.

Mane & tail comb: It is best to work on a small portion of hair at a time. The greater the pull, the easier and more likely it is to break the horse’s hair.

Hoof pick: Check the shape of the handle for comfort in the hand. Use a double-ended snap to fasten the hoof pick to a belt loop or saddle.

Sweat scraper: The thinner the scraper, the greater the flexibility. Use shaped end to work around the horse’s body contours. Apply pres-sure carefully, especially in less fleshy areas. The rubber-blade version is easier on more sensitive, thin-skinned horses. ––Fran Smith

““Shrimp Shack Shooter, a gelding Mary Ann Rapp won late October’s Cutting Stakes Non-Pro finals with at the Pacific Coast Cutting Horse Association Futurity to earn $14,821, can thank Tom Hanks and Mary Ann’s husband, Phil Rapp, for his name.

The 4-year-old (Smooth As A Cat x Awesome Autumn x Smart Little Lena) had another name when the Rapps bought him. They gelded him and switched his name.

In the movie, That Thing You Do, written and directed by Hanks, “The Wonders” per-form once as “Captain Geech and The Shrimp Shack Shooters,” a beach movie band.

“It was Phil’s idea,” Mary Ann said. “We were waiting for a good gelding to name that.”

Unlike “The Wonders,” Shrimp Shack Shooter already has more than one hit. He’ll head into his 5-year-old season with $53,141 earned at four limited-age finals. —MT
