How does study of the arts contribute to student achievement and success?

In 2010, Education Secretary Arne Duncan took up the cause of arts education and argued compellingly against curriculum narrowing—shifting instructional time and resources toward math and language arts and away from subjects such as art, music, foreign language, and social studies. The Secretary highlighted three reasons why arts education matters:The arts significantly boost student achievement, reduce discipline problems, and increase the odds that students will go

on to graduate from college. Second, arts education is essential to stimulating the creativity and innovation that will prove critical to young Americans competing in a global economy. And last, but not least, the arts are valuable for their own sake, and they empower students to create and appreciate aesthetic works.

At Lehrman, we regularly take the time to reflect on our program offerings, oftentimes finding ourselves enhancing our arts education programs. We, too, believe the arts, like science, history, geography and other content disciplines, are a critical part of the background knowledge kids need to become good readers and writers. In fact, research shows that arts education is critical to reading achievement. Arts instruction enhances and complements basic reading skills, language development and writing skills. In essence, teaching content is teaching reading.

Our strong arts education promotes the skills children need to be successful. Mrs. Brown knows that art education promotes self-directed learning and

sharpens critical and creative skills. She is the first to point out how our creative arts program has strongly influenced her students’ confidence and increased their academic success in the areas of math, science and language arts.

Lehrman is proud to have a rich arts program; when you walk into our building you will immediately notice the art displays, framed student art, and multiple representations of art experiences. Just as our students did, I too would like to extend an invitation to you to join us at the opening night of our Annual Art Exhibit on Monday, January 14 at 5:30 pm, one of the opportunities for us to showcase our fine arts curriculum.

For 22 years, Tom Lollar was director of visual arts at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City. He is a renowned ceramicist whose murals are represented around the world. A few years back, we were fortunate to have Mr. Lollar visit our art show and his reaction says it all: “The (Lehrman arts) program is very exciting and encourages creativity in a unique setting.”

The Tower of BaselDeborah Brown, Art Specialist

It is that time of year again when Art Basel comes to Lehrman and our walls virtually glow with the artistry of every child in the school. What is most remarkable about their efforts is how the Masters are reflected through their eyes and the work of their hands courtesy of the Core Knowledge Art Curriculum. CK integrates the fine arts with history, geography, science and language arts. Children build their knowledge and skills from one year to the next. From Nursery through 5th grade our students are exposed to the great masters as well as contemporary artists. The focus of

the Art Program is on creativity and active participation. Students develop an appreciation of art and culture in context, and learn to analyze art as well. Stop into a class and you will hear much chatter as the children communicate their ideas, feelings and skills, and build upon their ever-expanding knowledge of art and artists throughout history.

As you tour the exhibit you can sense the scope and sequence of skill building: Toddlers are exposed to a variety of media and encouraged to explore different tools. Nursery and Pre-K students continue to learn new skills and begin to learn about artists and masterworks. Kindergarteners build and expand skills and begin to develop an awareness of their own ability to create. As students

progress through 5th grade they develop confidence as they master skills and are encouraged to work through challenges. The Elements of Art: line, shape, color, form, value, space and texture are the tools of art. Students develop an awareness of the Elements and utilize them in their art. The Principles of Design: balance, emphasis, movement, pattern, repetition, rhythm, proportion, variety and unity are introduced and discussed.

Please come see firsthand the accomplishments of our talented students at our Annual Art Exhibit. The exhibit opens Monday evening, January 14th (from 5;30-7:30 pm) and runs through the month. Thank you for the opportunity to teach your children. It is both a pleasure and an honor.

5 ➤➤

Kindergarten learns about line and color, in observing masterworks and in producing their own work. Students recognize and discuss Woman in the Purple Robe by Henri Matisse, as well as Children at Play by Piet Brueghel (see p 5).

Grade 2 introduces famous architectural landmarks and sculpture from around the world. Landscape paintings are analyzed and explored. Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh is an inspiration for student drawings.

6 ➤➤

Three must-see exhibits at the Art Exhibit Opening were produced under our thematic Project Based Learning rubric. As you know, PBL has gone viral at Lehrman and every grade will be doing a PBL unit. The first grade’s work on manatees will be on display. Our 1st grade pull-out group will also be displaying their work on symbols and their creation of their personal symbols. The 2nd/3rd grade pull out PBL group worked on an architectural project with the help of our very own Kobi Karp. Each group has included a written or spoken presentation to explain their work.

The After-School Art Club expands upon in-school learning and provides interested students an additional opportunity to develop their creativity and explore tools and media. From paper masks and miniature paintings to painted floor cloths and life-size self-portraits, art club participants are totally engaged.

Grade 5 concentrates on the art and architecture of the Renaissance as evidenced by their Renaissance-style self portraits. Students also study the art of Japan and the art of 19th century America.
