Dear Parents,In his classic masterpiece Democracy

and Education, the great American philosopher and educator John Dewey makes the distinction between training and education. Training, he says, is simply transferring subject matter from one person to another. On the surface that is, of course, important. Just the term implies that—the subjects—the accumulated knowledge of a culture or a group, matters because it helps perpetuate the group. Where would we Jews be without the study of our texts and transmission of our way of life from generation to generation?

But what if the subject matter is simply poured into the children’s brain, to be measured by high-stakes tests like an F-CAT? That is simply training. If, however, the child is changes and grows, then it is education. In the 2nd grade owl pellet dissection project, for example, students discover the bones of small rodents left undigested by the predator owls, and compare them to their own skeletons, learning about the wonder and complexity of living things, the logic of their own biology, and the community of life on earth. In our MaToK Bible curriculum, students go beyond a survey of Bible stories and delve into skills that enable them to see the development of Hebrew from an ancient language into the modern tongue they study in TaL AM, thus getting a sense of its perseverance. They also confront existential human dilemmas in those stories—why did God say “Where are you?” to Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden? Doesn’t He know all? Was it right for Abraham to drive Hagar out of his family? Confronting these questions

indicates how Judaism can be relevant to their lives, beyond the fun of dressing up for Purim or dipping apples in honey.

Project Based Learning has brought to life real world, interdisciplinary issues related to their subject matter in many ways.

On the athletic fields and courts, Coach Aaron educates daily through practice, example, and word, the skills of the athletics, but also the sportsmanship and ethics he constantly brings home to the students. I marvel how after so many games when I try to get the score to publish in our publications, the kids know who won, but they seldom know the numbers. They love winning—that is how it should be. They remember who made the good plays and they remember that everyone got a chance to play; they never complain about that. It is to be expected. They are a team. That has changed them—for the better.

We work very hard at Lehrman to make subjects matter and to educate your children. We call that The Lehrman Difference.

Play Ball!Aaron Corliss, Director of AthleticsThere is always something for everyone in a PE class at Lehrman: stretching, balance and coordination for the little ones, fundamental skills for the middle years, and teamwork, sportsmanship and fair play as they grow older. The Athletic Department’s goal is to make a long-term contribution to the health, physical fitness, motor skill development, and academic success of your children. In physical education class your children will participate in individual activities as well as team sports that are age-appropriate and always played in a positive and supportive environment.

Many of you may already know that the Athletic Department here at Lehrman has a new ‘acquisition’ named Coach Brandon Shea, our ECD Physical Education Specialist. Coach Brandon’s energy and enthusiasm is contagious and we are very fortunate that he is on our team. Having Coach Brandon, a great asset to Lehrman, ensures that each

child in every grade has ample physical education classes throughout the week.

Coach Brandon and I work together to improve your children’s

physical characteristics including strength, endurance, balance, flexibility, and coordination. An emphasis is also placed on teaching your children

appropriate social skills, health and fitness, teamwork, and most important, sportsmanship.

Research shows that school-aged children who participate in physical activity on a regular basis perform better academically. According to The Journal of School Health, the more physical fitness tests children pass, the better they do on academic tests. It is our goal that when students leave Lehrman they leave not only with a great education, but with a healthy attitude towards physical fitness and the tools to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Interscholastic Athletics at Lehrman The Interscholastic Athletic Program,

for grades 4-5, offers competitive opportunities that research shows help students achieve higher self-esteem and develop leadership qualities.

Lehrman co-founded and is a member of the Jewish Athletic League for Jewish Day Schools in Miami-Dade County. Boys and girls teams include flag football, basketball, and soccer. Our students relish meeting students

from other Jewish day schools in this community.

Students play individual and team sports that are age-appropriate and always in a positive and supportive environment. Children who incorporate fitness into their daily routine tend to develop regular exercise habits—important elements of physical and mental health—ensuring they will make healthy lifestyle choices in the future.

“There can be bad winners as well as sore losers,”says Coach Aaron. “Of course we play to win, but no matter what the outcome, we strive to be good winners and good losers.”

Coach Aaron received this letter from former Lehrman Head of School Seth Linfield, currently Executive Director, Yeshivah of Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York.

Aaron, last night, Joe submitted the last of his college applications. As I read the essays of this strapping 6’3” young man before me and talked with him about his dreams of making a difference in global health, I kept flashing back to the 10-year-old boy, anxious about his first day of school in a new city, and the teacher who reached out to him on that day. You did more than welcome him—from that first day onward you conveyed optimism and an awareness of life’s possibilities which Joe has continued to run with to this very day. His sense of calling, his work ethic, his focus on doing the right thing in the right way, are but reflections of what he learned with you.

Wasn’t it yesterday that Joe was a 5th grader suggesting to you that just maybe he could play point? You gave him a chance - and then motivated him to improve his game daily. Your role modeling is the wellspring for the confidence Joe displays today, inside and outside the classroom. I don’t know if the Jewish day school league you formed gives out a Coach of the Year award, but for Joe, you are the Coach of a Life…

The Ball’s in Our (New) CourtA generous gift from the Waserstein Family will enable us to design, fabricate, install and maintain a state-of-the-art basketball court on the existing court area facing 77th Street.

The Waserstein Family Court, dedicated by Alan & Traci Waserstein in honor of his parents Charles & Marta Waserstein and their children Jessica, Brittany, Jake and Alexis Waserstein, and Steve & Ronit Waserstein in honor of his parents Charles & Marta Waserstein and their children Noah and Talya Waserstein, will feature adjustable fiberglas backboards, a newly surfaced court area—including the Lehrman Lions logo!— and an electronic scoreboard.

In keeping with the thoughtful and generous commitment of previous donors, the Waserstein Family perpetuates the legacy of our founder Rabbi Irving Lehrman k"z and his investment in our children’s future.
