Walter B. Koszyk is a man of true dedication, faith, and service:to God, to family, to country, and to the thousands of studentswhose lives he helped to shape during his 36 years on the Prepfaculty. In many ways, he is the ultimate unsung hero, giving ofhimself and of his talents so generously, but never seeking to bepraised for his efforts. The story of Walter’s life brings to mindSaint Ignatius’ Prayer for Generosity: “…to give and not to countthe cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not toseek for rest, to labor and not to seek reward.” He has humblyserved others for decades, and tonight we honor him as a true

Prep man, a true “man for others,” and, therefore, a true Legend of Prep.

A native of Hoboken, Walter graduated from Prep in 1960, then continued his Jesuiteducation at Saint Peter’s College, where he earned both bachelor’s and master’sdegrees. He served two tours of duty in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Thesame sense of duty and service that made Walter Koszyk a good soldier has alsomade him a devoted husband and father, an outstanding educator and a pillar of thePrep community.

Walter joined the Prep faculty in 1972 as part of a distinguished crop of newteachers that included fellow Legends inductee Carl DeLorenzo. His teaching dutiesover the 36 years that followed included German and health, but it was in theEnglish department where he would have the greatest impact. He taught every classlevel at one time or another, from freshman survey courses to a senior elective onSteinbeck. Countless Prep men are no doubt better writers today for having passedthrough his classroom or having received his help in the Writing Lab in the 1980sand 1990s. During his teaching career, he was also a frequent participant in theEmmaus retreat program, sharing his own faith and helping to shape the religiousjourneys of his students.

But perhaps nothing has set Walter apart, both in the classroom and beyond, morethan his willingness to leave the spotlight for others. His teaching style was neverdefined so much by grand gestures and glowing rhetoric as by a quiet persistenceand the personal attention he would give to each student. By believing in each of hisstudents, he helped them believe in themselves; by taking the time to help themunlock their potential, he led generations of Prepsters to become better studentsand better men.

A proud father of six, including Frank, Prep class of ’92, Walter resides in Bayonnewith his wife, Mary Ann.

Edward G. McNally, a member of the Prep class of 1917, was, without question, a true “Man for Others”. As a teacher andmentor, he was a friend to thousands of his students over hisfour decades of service at Grand & Warren.

Ed was born in 1899, one of nine children. He was raised inHoboken, and attended Prep along with his younger brother. After graduation in 1917, Ed entered the seminary. Althoughhe would later realize his vocation was not to the priesthood, there is no doubt about his vocation to teaching. He continuedhis own education, receiving a Master of Arts degree from

Fordham University. In 1924, he returned to Prep to begin an illustrious career thatwould continue until his death in 1966. Although Ed is perhaps best remembered forteaching senior English, he also served as the Assistant to the Principal — theposition he held at the time of his death. There were even days when he assumedthe role of “school bus,” picking up students who were waiting for buses along hiscrosstown drive to Prep from his home on Duncan Avenue.

Nowhere was Ed’s influence stronger, though, than in his senior English classes. While bringing to life Macbeth and other literary classics, he also introduced hisstudents to a collegiate teaching atmosphere that would help them transition to thenext level of their education. In addition to writing hundreds of college references,he added advice and guidance to go along with them. Generations of Prep menwould go on to recall the name “Charlie Gombash,” Ed’s comical reference tohimself that served as a reminder of the value of being able to laugh at oneself.

During World War II, Ed was drafted to the U.S. Army at the age of 44. After hismilitary experience, he was known to share with his students the humorousanecdotes of a middle-aged man’s exploits in a young man’s army. An avid traveler,Ed also loved to regale his students with stories and lessons from his adventuresvisiting Europe and driving across the United States.

Tonight’s honor is just the latest accolade for Ed’s distinguished career as aneducator. While teaching at Prep, Ed also served as a teacher and vice principal atWilliam L. Dickinson Evening High School, and upon his retirement from thatposition in 1960, the Dickinson students dedicated their yearbook in his honor. Andin 1967, Ed was honored posthumously, along with Joseph W. Sinnott (a member ofthe Legends class of 1999) when Prep named the McNally-Sinnott Chapter of theNational Honor Society in their honor.

Although Ed never married, he was extremely proud of his four nephews whoattended Prep. And we are sure he would be just as proud of current senior PatrickPindar, ’10, his great-grand-nephew.

Ed McNally served his alma mater with distinction and honor for decades — themark of a true “Man For Others,” and a true Legend of Prep.

When someone once asked if Jim Horan worked at Prep, acolleague remarked, “Does the Pope work at the Vatican?” Jimhas been indelibly connected with his alma mater for 35 years, the result of an eclectic and multi-faceted career.

A 1970 Prep graduate, he joined the faculty in 1974 — freshout of Marquette University with a degree in journalism — toteach a new senior elective called communications. At the time,Prep had very little in the way of an organized external affairsprogram.

As part of his graduate studies at Fordham, Jim designed acomprehensive student recruitment and PR effort for the school. On the basis of thisproject, in 1980 school president Joe Parkes, S.J.,’62 created the Office of PublicInformation, with Jim and a former top student of his (Dan Sorrenti, ’76) serving as itsco-directors. The results were dramatic and immediate, including first-class recruitingbrochures, dynamic open houses, the creation of Prep Magazine, strategic advertisingand PR outreach, and strengthened connections with Prep’s feeder grammar schools.

Jim continued teaching communications, journalism and English II Honors until 1986,when he decided to devote more time to his administrative responsibilities. However,he continued to teach his popular journalism elective until 2007, sharing his passionfor writing and editing with his students.

In 1991, school president Ed Salmon, S.J., ’54 appointed Jim to the new position ofVice President for Planning & External Affairs, with oversight of development andalumni, in addition to the marketing and recruitment outreach. Among his proudestinitiatives in this new role was the creation of the Alumni Board and the Prep Parents’Association, as well as shepherding such new programs as the Legends Dinner, theAthletic Hall of Fame, and the Freshman for a Day program. During those years, theAnnual Fund set records each year under his stewardship.

Notable, also, was his successful direction of the school’s first two capital campaigns, netting over $17 million and funding projects ranging from the renovated library to theWarren Street Plaza and Keenan Field — as well as over $4 million in gifts to the school’sendowment. It also set the stage for the major gift acquisitions that would follow.

Currently, Jim is in his second year of yet another new role at Prep, as Vice Presidentfor Planning & Principal Giving, responsible for coordinating the school’s compre-hensive master planning process and securing major gifts in support of those projects.

His other accomplishments include major feature articles published in Parade andNew Jersey Monthly; serving as Director of Media Relations for the 1988 U.S. Men’sOlympic Marathon Trials; and for five years co-publishing Running New Jersey, ahighly-regarded regional running magazine. As a runner himself, he was a memberof Prep’s 1968 county championship cross-country team and set records at Marquettewhile also twice being named captain and MVP.

Appropriately, Jim first met his soulmate, Pat, at a Prep dance during his junioryear, and next month they will celebrate their 33rd wedding anniversary at theirhome in Verona.

LEGENDS OF PREP IX

Thomas J. Leane is a man who has certainly left his mark. Overthe years, Prep’s campus and its downtown Jersey Citybackdrop have been transformed and renewed many times, and so many of these projects have been brought from drawingboard to reality with the help of Tom’s guiding hand.

A native of Jersey City, Tom came to Prep from Saint Joseph’sgrammar school in 1961, beginning a relationship that, nearly50 years later, continues to shape both the school and thisdedicated alumnus.

Tom has spent 35 years working on planning, financing, permitting and construction for over a hundred projects around Hudson County, valued in the billions. In addition to his work in private development, he has served asplanning director for the Hudson County Improvement Authority, and executivedirector of both the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency and the Union CityRedevelopment Agency. From the 96 acres of new development in the HudsonExchange area, between Newport and Harborside, to the planned redevelopment atJournal Square, Jersey City owes no small part of its building boom to Tom Leane. His work with the Liberty State Park Development Committee, the Hudson-BergenLight Rail Committee, the New Jersey State Recycling Committee and the HazardousWaste Site Development Committee have helped make Hudson County cleaner, greener and more efficient. He has also recently finished overseeing the constructionof the new Union City High School with its rooftop athletic facility — a project manyexpect will define a new direction in urban school construction.

Tom, of course, knows a thing or two about urban school construction, havingcollaborated with his alma mater on numerous campus improvements over the pastseveral decades. In cooperation with then-President Jim Keenan, S.J. and 2001Legends inductee Joe Cooney, ’45, P’68,’76, Tom paved the way for the constructionof Keenan Field; the sale of the former convent on Grand Street and the parking loton York Street; and the purchase of Saint Peter’s Church and the grammar schoolbuilding from the Archdiocese of Newark. As Prep moves forward with the newcampus master plan, Tom is once again making his mark at Grand & Warren. As amember of the Master Planning Committee, he has worked closely with PrepPresident Bob Reiser, S.J., Vice President for Planning and Principal Giving JimHoran, ’70, and the rest of the committee to develop a future vision for Prep’scampus, and to translate that vision into a reality.

Tom is a Prep man through and through — in addition to his current role, he haspreviously served as a trustee, a member of the Physical Plant Committee, and aproud Prep parent along with his wife Judy. Their son, Tom, graduated in 2004.Judy describes her husband as “a Renaissance man,” whose interests range fromsports — whether cheering a Prep team from the stands or playing tennis — totraveling, reading and the New York Times crossword puzzle, which he tackles eachday, in ink no less!

“Tendencies mark him as an extravert and a leader; hecommands attention and has a willing following.”

Those are the words the 1937 Petrean used to describe agraduate by the name of Edmund John Caulfield. More thanseventy years later, there are many things that can be said inpraise of John Vincent Caulfield, whom we honor this evening, but few could be more fitting than these describing his father.Leadership has been Jack’s hallmark at Prep, and family, hisspecial gift.

Jack began his service on Prep’s Board of Trustees inSeptember 1999, serving as chair of numerous committees and then as chairmanof the board itself for the past five years. During his tenure, he oversaw the 2006Strategic Plan as well as the 2008 Master Plan, and many significant initiatives inIgnatian identity, faculty retention, financial planning and curriculum development. In all of this, Jack has worked tirelessly and amicably, and has been a majorpresence at Grand & Warren for the past decade.

Born and raised in Jersey City, Jack attended Our Lady of Victories grammarschool, and graduated from Saint Peter’s Prep in 1971. His mother, Rose, remainsa very active member of OLV. After graduating from Prep, Jack continued his Jesuiteducation at Fordham University, from which he received a bachelor’s degree inaccounting in 1975. He subsequently received his certification in public accounting.

Throughout the years, Jack has served with distinction in the financial servicesand non-profit worlds. He began as a staff accountant and audit manager at ArthurYoung & Co., and then progressed though various financial leadership positions atJ.P. Morgan Chase where he ultimately served as Senior Vice President and ChiefFinancial Officer for Small Business Financial Services. Upon retiring from J.P.Morgan Chase in 2004, he served first as Chief Operations Officer for ErbachCommunications Group, and currently as Chief Financial Officer for the Make-a-Wish Foundation of New Jersey.

In addition to his leadership experience and qualities, Jack also brings a love offamily to his service at Saint Peter’s. The quote from the 1937 Petrean describesJack in its words; it is also appropriate because of Jack’s relationship with his nowdeceased father and his family members. As the Spring 2009 edition of PrepMagazine illustrates so well, the Caulfields truly are one of Prep’s legendaryfamilies. Jack’s two sisters, Maureen Doolan (wife of Jack, ’69) and Seton Ahearn(wife of Bill, ’75, tonight’s master of ceremonies) have carried along the Preptradition in their families, just as Jack has done with his two sons, Edmund, ’00, andChristopher, ’03. The latter, in fact, is now a member of Prep’s English department.

Leadership and family are perhaps the two defining qualities of a Prep man’s life. And among Jack Caulfield’s many gifts to his alma mater, these have been perhapsthe greatest. Jack’s steadfast leadership, and the Caulfield family’s longstandingPrep tradition, have made life at Grand & Warren throughout the years just thatmuch grander.

Carl S. DeLorenzo, or “DeLo,” as he is affectionately known inthe hallowed halls, has become as defining an element of Preplife as JUG, Latin class and the corner of Grand & Warren. Inthe midst of his 38th year as a member of the historydepartment, he remains one of the most respected and belovedmembers of the faculty — among students, alumni andcolleagues alike. His irrepressible sense of humor and hisunmistakable passion for the material have brought history tolife for generations of Prep men, and continued the proud Preptradition of outstanding teachers.

Born in Jersey City in 1949, Carl attended Saint Boniface grammar school beforefollowing brother Vincent, ’63, to Prep. During his years as a Prep student, Carlworked at Zampella’s Clothing Store on Newark Avenue, where he met several notedJersey City politicians, not to mention his future wife Annette Tagliareni, whosefamily owned the neighboring deli. Upon his graduation in 1967, he entered SaintPeter’s College, where he earned a degree in classical languages and Europeanhistory. He would later earn a master’s degree in history from Fordham University.

Carl’s return to Grand & Warren to embark on an illustrious teaching career beganunexpectedly. Mike Gray, then chair of Prep’s history department, invited him tocampus for a social visit. To Carl’s surprise, Gray offered him a teaching positionbeing vacated by future Prep president Jim Joyce, S.J. In the years that followed,he would teach a full range of history courses: Western Civilization, U.S. History,French & Russian Revolutions, The Modern Middle East and many more.

When asked recently what keeps him in the classroom year after year, Carlbrandished the legendary DeLo wit, quipping, “Two things: the free parking, andthe summers off,” before revealing the deeper truth: “How many people have anopportunity to do for a living what they have a passion for?”

That passion has carried him to teaching assignments beyond his alma mater aswell. This past summer, he lectured at the Army War College in Carlisle,Pennsylvania on the history of the modern Middle East. He has also spoken on thesame topic to officers and NCOs at Fort Carson, Colorado. During Fox News’ 2008Election Day programming, Carl appeared as a panelist to offer historicalperspective on the election.

Although it might be hard to imagine Carl outside the classroom, he is a family manas well. He and Annette currently reside in Belleville, having moved from JerseyCity to Millstone Township and back to Jersey City over the years as they raisedtheir two sons, C.J. and Gerard.

Asked about his hopes for the future, with the 40-year mark for his teaching careeron the horizon, Carl remarked, “I hope I’m not late for class tomorrow morning.Really, I don’t even think about retirement because I still love what I do. I feelinvigorated every September.”
