Years of Joy with Learning Space10102005-20152005-2015

Discovering one's growing identity as every year adds friends and followers, and new tasks to fulfill dreams in the village area, Learning

Space gets a ten on ten for being a spirited vehicle of change – with ten full years completed the Learning Space comes of age, and goes forward with a new vigour. In a time that is rapidly changing minds and realities in our country, the challenges are always a step ahead of the achievements. We, at Learning Space, are flowing with the tide as it nears the shore to touch the outcome, even as waves rise and fall to meet the desired end.

Our foray into transforming the village schools run by govt. depts. found an anchor with a successful pilot run along with a partner, Lions Club of Juhu, changing the destiny of little native children of more than 7 schools in the villages around our learning centre in Kelthan. More valuable inputs are coming from the Corporate CSR partners, as social investment enabling villages and their interior hamlets, and especially schooling children with the simple bare necessities of life, and of course better education. With the broad base, network with schools and trusted friendships in the length and breadth of the Thane and Palghar districts, our intervention into rural education with the E-Teach English, Early Learners Development Program, Swasthya Sanitation Project, Adopt-A-School project and many more, the process of renewing village life and putting it on the right track is under way.

Our efforts are only a drop in the ocean – but not without the promise that one magical drop stirs up the entire ocean to reverberate to the change that is inevitable.

September 2011A monthly Newsletter

The project entered its third year of implementation (after a trial run in 2011-12) with

syllabus based std 3 DVDs being successfully distributed to teachers (enabled to use the new

method with orientation programs) across Thane and Palghar districts, and in prominent places

like Latur and Raigad in the State. The magic of quick and easy learning of English language by

rural children through an ingenuously crafted mechanism of animated musical DVDs, is rapidly

catching up in other parts of the MH State. Enquiries from Solapur, Satara, Pune and Osmanabad

are drawing our attention to go all out and put this method of teaching a language into every Zilla

Parishad school.

The team is working with an outreach plan spanning about 5000 schools and transforming

learning process of approx. 2,00,000 primary school children by end of the current academic year.

districts of the State to ensure that every rural child benefits from the enjoyable DVD based program.

With the NGO Muktangan's (www.m) highly skilled resource persons imparting invaluable training to local graduate trainees at LSF, to become change agents in their rural surroundings – this “Activity Based Learning” project is certainly shaping up as an important research on necessary processes for ''enabling learning'' at the early stage of a child's development vis-a-vis rural environment, using indigenous means and material. The project has drawn up an implementation field spanning villages and hamlet under 8 Grampanchayats, 23 Zilla Parishad primary schools and 27 Anganwadi preschools under the ICDS. It is effectively reaching out to 1500 children in the age group of 3-7, whose before and after learning abilities and performing capabilities are being studied and documented on a day to day basis, to enable a usable model.

The research project has been funded for a two year peiod 2015-17 by the Edelgive Foundation, social wing of Edelweiss Capital Ltd. with the intention of creating a useful & replicable model for early learning in rural India. For any further details of the project, write to Mr. Ashish Bijawargi, project coordinator email: [email protected]

The lack of essential infrastructure in schools as well as for improving the general physical condition of the primary and secondary schools, LSF has initiated some projects with partners who have recognized the value of investing their time,

energies and money in rural education – to change the severe imbalance of quality of education in the urban and rural areas in India. Here, LSF is playing a crucial role of being the service provider with a strong and influential presence in the villages to bring together all stakeholders to pro-actively participate in the change.Lions Club of Juhu initiated & supported ADOPT-A-SCHOOL Project of repairing,

renovating and adding essential infrastructure and value to the preschools and primary schools in the Thane district.

Lions Club of Juhu initiated & supported ADOPT-A-SCHOOL Project of repairing, renovating and adding essential infrastructure and value to the preschools and primary schools in the Thane district.

Deutsche Bank Employees run 'Trade for A Cause' initiated building permanent toilets and sanitation in 5 High schools in the district.

United Way of Mumbai (UWM) led solar lighting for schools and interior hamlets with support from Henkel India

And many individuals and families who have come forward wholeheartedly to transform schools, open up water sources and do everything that is required to better rural lives.

Since July this year, we have re-introduced the computer course for over 100 high school children, living in the interior hamlets of villages Kelthan and Goraad, in the first 4 months and will be extending it to another set of equal number of students in the remaining months of the academic year - the students will learn from their ICT syllabus and get enough time to practise skills on the computer, with the facility of a computer to each student (Most formal schools have computer centres but with very few computers to allow every student to get enough time to acquire and practise skills). A tribal student from village Kelthan, who grew up with the Learning Space project since its inception in 2005, Ganesh Jadhav, is a truly a success story of the LSF intervention in villages, as he independently draws up the syllabus and practise sessions for the computer class, and also heads the Accounts Dept. at LSF with a team of two assitants, who double up as computer teachers.

At LSF, we are hoping to create a pool of funds, donated by friends and supporters to be 'A HELPING HAND' Fund, so that every time a bright young deserving village student knocks on our door for help, we don't have to go around soliciting for help at the last minute!!

So please contribute to the HELPING HAND project and we will report to you on the use of your donated money with specific mention of the student and the course he/she is pursuing.
