media art space = open experimental learning space
DESCRIPTION
Our laboratory at University of Cologne has grown from a regular classroom to a multi purpose learning space – MedienBildungsRaum (mbr). Dealing with concepts of multi-purpose learning environments and theories on learning spaces and knowledge building, physical and virtual space are equally important for present and future learning processes. We seek to prepare flexible core concepts for adjustable spaces of new learning culture and develop patterns for different settings of learning and knowledge building activities based on Christopher Alexander’s Pattern–Language (1977), finding solutions for their representation in our particular room. It is vital for Bildung* to allow technology and architecture to be unnoticed and extraordinarily flexible to the changing demands of learning. Adjustable, agile, corrigible installations, furniture and portable technology define distinct but temporary zones of action and enable diversifiable settings for learning. There will be a general introduction to learning spaces and Christopher Alexander’s pattern language with examples, and participants will then develop patterns for learning.TRANSCRIPT

Mediology
(after Régis Debray) cross-disciplinary method of investigating the cultural transmission of religions, ideologies, the arts and political ideas in society, and across societies, over a time period that is usually to be measured in decades or millennia.
Debray argues that mediology... "would like to bring to light the function of medium in all its forms, over a long time span - since the birth of writing. And without becoming obsessed by today's media"

Patterns and Pattern Language in education and learning
On the basis of in Christopher Alexander’s Pattern Language we interpret the settings for learning environments as patterns. In patterns, elements of our surroundings are captured. The identified patterns are more than the sum of its parts. It is a definite and observable arrangement of elements. At the same time it is permeable and open. Patterns join conjunctions with other patterns in certain associations depending on their level of complexity and abstractionEducation design builds on Alexander’s methodological opus (“A Pattern Language", 1976), and uses it as a toolkit for the conception of clear-cut, and however flexible, learning environments.

multi-purpose learning environments
Hence, adjustable, agile, corrigible installations, and furniture such as folding chairs, collapsible tables, and portable technology (mobile devices and computers) define distinct, but temporary zones of action and enable diversifiable settings for learning, e.g. round-table, informal lounge, group-work, workshop situations, studio work and idle space. Due to this flexibility paradigm, additional undefined space – flex space – temporarily forms between the predefined patterns/zones. These quasi-gaps, again, add to the spatiotemporal potential of the room; they even further the encouraging virtual and physical environment that offers opportunities for Bildung* in datatecture and architecture instead of hindering it.
