MASTHEAD: the iconic Logo or Title of the magazine . With this particular magazine its very common for the artist/band on the front cover, to block out part of the logo. This isn’t a company mistake it’s to suggest that even if the logo isn’t fully on show, it is so iconic that the reader will still know what magazine it is. The colours of the logo are in-keeping with the over all theme of the magazine and coincides well with the headlines and features

HEADLINES: commonly centred in the middle of the page the headlines are aimed to attract readers to the content of the magazine . The headline is in a san-serif font so it fits in well with the over all theme of the font cover, but by making it a bright yellow colour and in block capitals, it stands out well front he background and attacks the reader to the content of the issue

COVERLINES : similar to ‘lures’ coverlines display the content of the magazine persuading the reader to buy. On this particular issue the y are advertising the different bands that have been interviewed at Leeds and Reading . This would suggest that the fans of these bands would buy the issue purely for the interviews inside. Coverlines aren’t necessarily designed to grab the readers attention, they are just to offer some extra information about the issue. On this front cover they are in a small sized white san-serif font, simply so that the words don't blend in with the background and are visible to the readers eye.

FEATURES / ARTICLES: a feature/article on a front have a similar purpose to a lure or a coverline. The aim of these is to try and persuade the audience to reader more of what's inside but to ultimately get them to but the magazine. On this front cover (which is not uncommon for NME) they have used pictures of the bands that are featured in articles within the magazine (with this particular issue they have used pictures of the bands playing at both the Leeds and Reading festivals). This is a good way for the magazine to attract the attention of the people that have been to either Leeds or Reading and or are looking at going to the next one, offering another scene of appeal to the magazine.

LURE: a lure is designed to attract the readers attention , to make them curious about the content, make them want to look inside but to ultimately persuade them to buy the issue. On this particular front cover that have used statements about what they might reed about inside the magazine i.e. Leeds and Reading Music Festival

PUFF: this is known as a statement that self promotes the magazine as an issue . For instance on this issue it describes the magazines content as the ULTIMATE REVIEW of both Leeds and Reading festivals which would suggest that NME is trying to stand out from the rest of the magazines you may find out the shelf . Especially the ones which may have also covered the festivals.

SERIF STYLE FONT: serif isn’t a font that you would have as the masthead or headline of this particular magazine: As you can see the masthead, lures, coverlines and headlines of this magazine are all a san-serif font. The serif font on this front cover isn’t of a great importance suggesting that its just there to add a sort of old and traditional look to the over all front cover (merely to break up the over use of the san-serif font) both statements are in white so they don't blend into the green background (the audience are still able to read it). STARRING, I think is to even out the use of both fonts when luring the reader and I would suggest that NEW MUSICAL EXPRESS is part of the masthead rather than it being a lure or a coverline.

SANS-SERIF STLYE FONT: this type of font is aimed to stand out from the background but to distract the reader from the main headlines. By adding individual words darting around the headline, it makes the magazine more edgy and appealing to its audience fitting in well with the over all theme of the front cover without distracting you from the main headline .

PUG/STARBURSTS: these are designed to catch the readers eye and to promote the content of the magazine. For example; this particular issue is a festival special, so advertising BOTH the Reading and Leeds festival is a genius way to promote what's inside the magazine, as well as the festivals themselves. It is also a good way to attract readers which may not necessarily buythis type of magazine, as a kind of new fan bass

LAYOUT: with every issue of this magazine the layout will remain the same. However the context, theme, and front cover of each issue changes slightly with each week . For

example; this issue is a festival special, you can tell that by using a green background and the different pictures

advertising bands and artist’s is very in-keeping with the festival theme
