In case you hadn’t noticed, we are trying new things at your Chamber.

Traditionally, Chambers of Commerce have always done things to attract new businesses, help businesses grow, and connect businesses with new customers. We still do all that and more. To bolster our efforts, we are trying new plans.

To attract new businesses to Downtown Elkhart, we have created a new Director of Downtown Development. You have read about that in past issues and in the media. Andy Jones has been advocating on behalf of existing businesses and attracting new ones. Hopefully you have noticed the momentum downtown. New stores have opened and new restaurants are on their way. Thanks to the Elkhart Redevelopment Commission, the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, and the Convention and Visitors Bureau for helping make the position a reality.

In this issue of Leading Business, you will read an update on Launch Elkhart, a business incubator located at our Chamber. Through services provided by the Chamber, SCORE, ISBDC and a partnership with IUSB, we have created an environment for new businesses to get established, then “launch” into the community. Thanks to Mayor Tim Neese and the Community Foundation of Elkhart County for helping launch Launch Elkhart.

We have been thrilled to welcome new businesses into Launch Elkhart. There is excitement in the air at the Chamber. We are eager for even more tenants as we watch these businesses grow.

With business connections, also known as networking, it is difficult to find something new. Through our connection events, like Biz-Ness After Hours, we have been bringing you together with clients, customers, and partners for

4 GREATER ELKHART CHAMBER | EDUCATE ADVOCATE ELEVATE

Trying New Thingsyears. We have hosted new types of connection events, like FUNworking, a speed networking activity.

Now, we are trying another new networking tool. On the recommendation of another Chamber in the state, we are using a new mobile-based tool called Socio. Through Socio, you can walk into an event and shake your phone, like you are shaking hands. You will see all the other Socio users in the room. If you can connect with them through the program, it will be like capturing their business cards on your phone. Not just their business card, but their LinkedIn page, Facebook page, Twitter page, YouTube page, and every other connection they want to share. Likewise, they will get all that information from you.

You control what you want to share. It may be that you just want to meet that person in-person. And then exchange numbers. However, business communications are happening, increasingly, on social media. Here is your chance to exchange links before you meet.

After a “soft launch” of Socio at the September Biz-Ness After Hours at Burston Marketing, we are going to promote it heavily at the October 4 Biz-Ness Expo. When you visit the Expo, you will have the opportunity to not just celebrate the Elkhart County business climate. You will have the opportunity to connect with everybody there, whether you see them in front of you or not.

To try Socio, download the free app. I would suggest logging in with your LinkedIn account. For my first attempt, I created the account through Facebook, and did not have my professional picture in place. If you want to see how it works, you can search for me and ask to connect. At the Expo, you just shake the phone and all Socio users will appear.

Your Chamber continues to Educate, Advocate and Elevate your business. We may be 90 years old, but we are not afraid of change. In a changing world we adapt so we can bring the best product to you and our community. I hope you enjoy our new initiatives.

Our goal is to continue to promote improvements to major projects, including: US 31 corridor, CR 17 corridor, Nappanee Street/ SR 19 corridor, CR 6/Cleveland Road corridor, US 20 corridor, US 33 corridor, new railroad grade separations, and bridges.

A couple of months ago Mayor Neese and a representative of the Community Foundation joined us in one of our conference rooms to announce the creation of Launch Elkhart. With grants from the City of Elkhart and the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, we were going to transform our 1989 décor into a new hub of entrepreneurial activity. The transformation process began the next week. In one room, the wallpaper came down without much of a fight. In the other, it decided to take some wall with it. In the hallway, the trim had been installed with glue and screws, so it did not exit gracefully. But the David Klein Painting team overcame the obstacles and greatly changed the look of the walls. Collins and Company replaced the mauve carpet with something much more appropriate. Modern furniture from Business Furnishings, Office 360, and Office Barn is making the conference room a useful office space. The trim from Nickell Moulding is painted and installed. Frontier will soon be installing incredibly fast internet. In other words, thanks to the City of Elkhart and the Community Foundation of Elkhart County, Launch Elkhart looks much better than it did when we announced the project in July. More importantly to the purpose, we currently have four companies using the space. A couple of the clients had to step around drop cloths and handle desks being moved by painters. But things are mostly calm now.

Open and Available!

Launch Elkhart client Ryan White, Midwest Energy Group, and Chamber President Kyle Hannon discuss ongoing improvements in the facilities.

William Vanslager from Hallmark Home Mortgage was the first Launch Elkhart client. He has been able to use the space as his temporary office to get caught up with paperwork and meet with clients.

There are many types of business incubators around the nation and even our region. They are all important. What makes Launch Elkhart effective is the business support we are able to offer on-site. We have great partnerships with SCORE, ISBDC, IUSB and, of course, the Center for Business Excellence, the Director of Downtown Development, and the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce.

Our current tenants include Hallmark Mortgage, Homes for Heroes, 4-Sight Inspection Services and Midwest Energy Group. We welcome them to downtown and to our building.

We are looking for more businesses to utilize this great opportunity. If you know of a start-up business looking for space, have them call the Chamber at (574) 293-1531. We want to do all we can to Launch new businesses in Elkhart!

Welch Packaging Group, an independent corrugated box manufacturer, is announcing the expansion of their Elkhart facility for a graphics addition and installation of a new corrugator. This expansion increases Welch Packaging’s Elkhart Operation by allowing the company to begin manufacturing its own corrugated sheets for conversion. Construction of the building has been underway since June with a projected completion date before the end of the year.

Support of the local community has allowed Welch Packaging to expand their product offerings through this investment. Welch will be able to get products to market faster, customize paper for special board grades and combinations,

and ensure consistent quality. The 110” corrugator is specifically designed for maximum flexibility of the production process. Running finished sheets at 1200 feet per minute, Welch will have the versatility to produce any spectrum of paper requests through rapid and multiple set up capability, meeting any size demand for the customer.

“Our community and our customers have always been at the heart of the business decisions we make,” explained Welch Packaging President, Scott Welch. “We would not have been able to make this type of investment without such great support from our local customers through the years.”

The local community is extremely important to Welch Packaging. Strong relationships in the community and a service commitment to their customers has been Welch’s recipe for success. In fact, every member of Welch Packaging’s Executive Team graduated from an Elkhart area High School. The company is run by a team of individuals who live local, support local charities and foundations and want the Elkhart community to be a great place to live, work and raise a family.

“The most important part of our expansion is our ability to better support our local customers, right here in Elkhart,” shared John Martin, COO of Welch Packaging. “We don’t want our local

customers to go outside of our community to have their needs met.”

The increase in their physical facilities includes the capacity for the corrugator and its accompanying materials and supplies along with additional space designated to their rapidly growing graphics business unit. The graphics expansion will provide additional space for

machinery specifically devoted to the graphics market and will allow Welch to deliver on their service promise; 100% on time delivery, high quality products that exceed customer expectations, shortest lead times in the market, prices in less than 24 hours and being easy to do business with.

This expansion illustrates Welch Packaging’s commitment to continue to grow in Elkhart and creates over 80 new skilled positions for the Elkhart County workforce. Welch also decided to partner with local construction companies, among them J. A. Wagner, DJ Construction, LeMaster Steel Erectors, and H&G Services, generating additional jobs for the local community during the completion of their 195,000 square foot facility. As a local family owned business, it was a key initiative to contract with other local businesses, to allow the community to profit and create additional

jobs based on the expansion.

Welch Packaging is a family owned business that designs and manufactures custom corrugated products and packaging solutions for local customers.

Welch Packaging is always looking for their next great Leader! If you, or someone you know, is interested in joining the Welch Team, reach out to [email protected] to learn more about the exciting opportunities at this dynamic and growing company!
