Laura Escobedo named Outstanding Service Leader

After helping to coordinate two of the largest community service initiatives this academic year (Make A Difference Day & The BIG Event), Laura Escobedo has been bestowed the Outstanding Service Leader award for the month of April. Nominated on behalf of Jackelyne Briseño, SGA President and peer to Escobedo, Laura has demonstrated a sincere passion in helping others in her community. Currently, Escobedo is a member of the D.D. Hachar Honors Program, Senator At-Large, Risk Manager/Service Coordinator and L.O.V.E Committee Chair for the Student Government Association (SGA), member of the TAMIU Psychology Club and Sigma Lambda Gamma and a First Year Success Mentor. Though Escobedo has a full plate being an involved student on campus, she manages to find time to serve the Laredo and TAMIU community. “Laura started meeting since last semester to plan out the BIG Event 2014, working hand-in-hand with SCCE and SGA. There were approximately 150 students who participated in the BIG Event and we received very positive feedback from the students about this year,” stated Briseño. Escobedo is to be owed much gratitude for the success of this initiative. Congratulations to Ms. Escobedo for her dedication in making the Laredo and TAMIU community one of her top priorities.

    Pillar named Community Engagement Partner

organizing and hosting community events for TAMIU

    students.” – Jackelyne Briseño

Founded in 2010 as a means to service youth victims of bullying and attempted suicide in the Laredo and surrounding communities, People with Ideas of Love, Liberty, Acceptance & Respect (PILLAR) has been awarded the Community Engagement Partner for the month of April.

PILLAR services the community 24 hours a day, seven days a week and offers numerous services to youth victims including confidential counseling, community engagement workshops, resource center and a Crisis Intervention Hotline. Nominated on behalf of Students Keeping Youth Alive (SKYA), a recognized student organization of TAMIU aimed at advancing the respect of human rights for victims of bullying, homophobia and suicide, SKYA has expressed how much the non-profit has aided the mission of their organization. “They are very devoted to the notion of our group and they help the community in every way they possibly can while increasing awareness about suicide and bullying around the community,” stated SKYA. Congratulations to PILLAR for being the help that Laredo youth victims trust in and count on.

On Thursday, April 24, 2014 Campus Activities Board (CAB) hosted their annual Pre-Exam Jam at the ZSC Green from 12-3 p.m.

This event is dedicated to helping TAMIU students de-stress, relax and have fun before final exams. This year, Pre-Exam Jam featured a mechanical bull, moonwalk, games, food and prizes! A total of 18 student organizations participated in the event, each one hosting a game

that related to the mission of their organization. CAB raffled off an LED 42’’ TV to lucky winner, Diana Gonzalez and hosted a wing eating contest where winners Pedro Macias and Maurice Bell were awarded Beats by Dre Headphones. With over 300 people in attendance, Pre-Exam Jam was yet another success this year.

Congratulations to the CAB Pre-Exam Jam committee and Mrs. Teresa Renn for coordinating such an awesome event.

The CrossFit Craze: Why the sport has become everyone’s favorite? Founded a few decades ago by renowned gymnast, Greg Glassman, CrossFit has become the ultimate fitness craze around the world. Known as the “jack of all trades, master of none,” CrossFit is one of the most effective types of workouts that produces results for the beginner, intermediate athlete and advanced athlete. The reason? The WODs (Workout Of the Day) are different every single day. Each CrossFit workout incorporates aerobic conditioning, Olympic weightlifting, and gymnastics along with using standard gym equipment such as kettlebells, rope climbs, jump ropes, tire flipping and more! CrossFit was first used predominantly by military, the marines, police and fire academy trainees in 1995, but it wasn’t long before it spread throughout California and eventually worldwide in the early 2000s.

An example I can give about a CrossFit success story is on my older sister, Laura. Laura began her CrossFit journey one year ago at Laredo’s XFit Reloaded. Growing up, my sister was not the most athletic person. She didn’t play any sports and she didn’t consistently work out. I on the other hand, have played sports since I was a little girl. My specialties include tennis, golf, gymnastics and cheerleading. In addition, I have trained at Curves Gym for Women, Crunch Fitness and the TAMIU Rec. Although it kills me to say this, in just one year, my sister has managed to become a better athlete than I, and I have been doing this my whole life.

She is leaner, more toned, cut and a heck of a lot stronger today than she has ever been before. After noticing her results and hearing her talk about it all the time, I decided to go with her one day after work to CrossFit and try it out. The workout was beyond intense…in a good way. In the beginning of the workout a trainer walked us through what we would be doing. I stared at him with wide eyes as he demonstrated some of the exercises I never knew existed. I was embarrassed even to attempt to perform some of the moves in front of such a large group of people. A few minutes into the workout, I realized no one cared what I looked like when working out. Everyone was there for one reason and one reason only…to get a good workout! There were people of all shapes and sizes killing that workout. What I enjoyed most was that everyone joined together like a family. No one judged you if you needed a modification for the exercise or if you finished last. Rather, they encouraged you to keep pushing and to challenge your body. I was impressed with what my body could do, to say the least.

That day, I fell in love with CrossFit and the next day, I was sore beyond belief. While I would have loved to continue with CrossFit, I did not have the finances to do so. The cost for a CrossFit membership ranges from $80-$200 a month, depending on the location of the gym and the trainers’ expertise. Still, I wanted to be able to continue with high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts at home and at the gym I go to. So I got on my computer and started researching for at-home CrossFit workouts. Today, my weekly workout routine consists of CrossFit inspired HIIT WODs three out of the six days I exercise. If you are looking to take your body to the next level of athleticism and if your budget allows you to do so, I encourage you to contact your local CrossFit gyms and begin your journey. Once you start, you’ll never want to stop. I owe much gratitude to my sister for being the inspiration I needed to try Xfit and eventually join the CrossFit family.
