Man has marveled at the power of lighting for thousands of years. Initially light was integrated into our structures through fenestration and fire. In the past century, electrically generated light has helped to transform interior spaces into functional, usable spaces at night. Now, lighting has become a design tool to transform interiors and architecture into both dramatic and dynamic environments.

In the past fourteen years, LIGHTING DESIGN ALLIANCE’s projects have incorporated the latest lighting technologies. The result is reflected in the close to 40 international design awards that we have received. This use of technology has allowed us to grow and to better serve our clients. 95% of our projects are from past clients.

In 1992, we had a staff of three people and one location. Currently, LIGHTING DESIGN ALLIANCE has 27 employees and a total of three offices - Los Angeles, Chicago, and our latest office in Dubai, UAE. The growth has been controlled to ensure that our design principles and unparalleled service are not compromised.

We hope to refine the principles that made our first decade so successful, in our second decade of service. Like our name, “alliance” has been part of our business plan since the very inception. We endeavor to carefully integrate lighting within the architectural parameters, while keeping in mind budget, schedule, sustainability, and owners’ expectations. The resulting project is maintainable and exceeds client’s expectations, while being on time and on budget.

ARCHITECTURAL/THEATRICAL TECHNIQUESThe trend continues. Bold colors or dynamic lighting is not relegated to Las Vegas or themed restaurants anymore. Theatrical overlays represent the fastest growing segment of our practice. Luckily the technology is growing just as fast. While the lighting principles remain the same, longer life lamps are now available to minimize maintenance costs. While costs are still a challenge, many dynamic effects can be created by integrating newer technologies into architectural lighting.

BUDGET Accountability. Based on previous project experience, LIGHTING DESIGN ALLIANCE can accurately estimate the lighting related construction costs of a project. Early in the schematic phase, we will develop, review, or analyze your budget. In the design development phase, fixtures are properly quoted before specifications to ensure fair and accurate pricing. Through construction administration, we will continue to review bids and estimates so that the client receives the best value for money. Some of our best and most creative designs have been a result of a limited budget. Unlimited or tight, we are able to use our expertise to create award-winning designs.

SERVICESchedule and accuracy. Great designs are only the beginning. If deadlines are not met, the information is of no use. We have developed the best staff and infrastructure to meet the most stringent of deadlines. By utilizing a large in-house staff and up to date equipment we can enhance any team. Seamless digital integration through our proven document controls allows us to work better and faster, but more importantly, it allows the rest of the design team to work faster. Accuracy of all documents minimizes additional costs to the owner. Quality control methods combined with years of experience, computer modeling and full scale mock-ups ensure designs that work the first time.

APPROPRIATENESSBirds and stars. Good design incorporates a certain amount of awareness. Recent studies show that night time illumination can impact migratory birds and other animals. Likewise, increased light pollution disturbs neighbors and conceals stars from view. The simple elimination of glare solves most problems. Design concepts and techniques that focus all of the light on elements and trees rather than shine lights up into the atmosphere is not only good design, it is also more efficient.

DESIGNAesthetics and appropriateness. The design begins with listening to the client’s and design team’s needs and desires. The design’s direction is then developed in an alliance with the entire team. The architecture that is illuminated by the light fixtures is important, but so are the elements that are not lighted. Drama through the intentional use of shadows and contrast enhance the space. If appropriate, decorative fixtures provide scaling elements. Concealed task lighting can then be added. This layering of light provides the design that creates space.

EDUCATIONThe right thing to do. The entire staff at LIGHTING DESIGN ALLIANCE realizes the importance of education. Our commitment includes informing clients on the benefits of good lighting design as well as visiting colleges around the country and teaching students. Educational lectures include all of the major trade shows, both domestic and abroad. Many of the staff have taught lighting courses at the regional colleges and universities. To illustrate our continuing commitment to education, five years ago LIGHTING DESIGN ALLIANCE established a scholarship which annually awards one student with a trip to Lightfair International and a $2,500 grant. As our industry and firm grows and matures, we will be a leader.

SUSTAINABILITY In the last 15 years LIGHTING DESIGN ALLIANCE has worked on numerous projects that have included sustainable design on multiple levels. We have been a member of Sustaining US Green Building Council for many years and have several LEED® accredited professionals in the office.

In August 2008, we moved to a custom designed low carbon footprint office. With 100% daylight in working areas, PV and hot water panels, sun tracking skylights and fiber-optic systems, electric lighting with full dimming and daylight harvesting capabilities and exterior solar shutters, the building is lighting technology heavy and we are expecting to see our electric meter running backwards. Working in this environment reminds us at all times the benefits of such designs and encourages us to be mindful of the same for the other projects we design.

In the mid 80s, we were one of the first to introduce corporate clients to the benefits of energy efficient lighting in their projects. All projects we design promise the following:

i. Energy efficiencyii. Emphasizing good environments by the use of higher color

rendering lampsiii. Minimizing glare and flickeriv. Reducing environmental pollution by using low pollution lamps. v. Reduce maintenance by using minimal number of lamp types,

while proving lighting that is sympathetic and an integral part of the architecture.

The newest applicable technology in the form of lamp developments and technology are automatically a part of every design. This includes the use of high color rendering ceramic metal halides and fluorescents, LEDs and energy saving ballasts and control systems.

Dedication to the environment. The key to our future. While this is the hottest topic in the design world, it is not new to our staff. LIGHTING DESIGN ALLIANCE has developed lighting techniques and equipment to meet the stringent requirements of California’s Title 24. Recognized by the utility companies as a leader in energy efficient designs, our designs have been incorporated into many of the state’s most efficient structures. As developers see the marketing benefits of LEED certified buildings, and as “Savings by Design” incentives are utilized, we foresee the energy efficient trend to continue with increased budgeting for efficient lighting and controls.
