LAVC Celebrates Becoming 200th All-Steinway School

Los Angeles Valley College celebrated becoming the 200th All-Steinway School on Saturday, March 17, 2018. LAVC joins a prestigious list of colleges, universities and conservatories who are known worldwide as “All-Steinway Schools.”

The celebration kicked off with an LAVC Music Department Open House and Tour, which had Steinway and Boston (also made by Steinway) pianos on display in various classrooms and music labs. The celebration culminated with an evening concert by the Valley Symphony Orchestra featuring a new Steinway Grand piano. The concert also featured the LAVC Wind Ensemble, the College Choir and Chamber Singers, and various soloists.

During the concert intermission, Steinway and Sons representative, Tim Stephenson, presented a plaque to LAVC President Dr. Erika Endrijonas recognizing LAVC as the 200th All-Steinway School, and the first in the San Fernando Valley.

“We are very happy to have Los Angeles Val-ley College join a growing group of institu-tions with an affiliation to Steinway,” said Stephenson. “By becoming an All-Steinway School, LAVC and its Music Program represent a commitment to musical excellence allowing its faculty and students access to the finest equipment for the study as well as the

performance of music.”

Dr. Endrijonas accepted the plaque and addressed the two hundred concert attendees. “This is an incredible moment for Valley College!” she said. “When I arrived here nearly four year ago, members of the Music Department informed me that our fleet of twenty-two pianos were old and in very poor condition. The time had come to replace our old pianos, and Music faculty Michael Arshagouni, Yih-Mei Hu, and Music De-partment Chair Christian Nova, through their diligence, proposed a partnership with Steinway and Sons.”

LAVC acquired eighteen of the twenty-two pianos from Steinway and Sons from the college’s equipment budget. The final four pianos were acquired with the assistance of the LAVC Foundation, which entered into a lease-to-own agreement with a Steinway finance company.

The LAVC Foundation also hosted a special reception for some of its patrons prior to the concert to announce a forthcoming fundraising campaign. In May 2018, the Dale Michael Spina Memorial Endowment was established to provide scholarships in Journalism. Spina, an alumnus and former Warner Bros. executive, passed away in August 2017.

Spina joined Warner Bros. Studios in 1970 and rose through the ranks to become the vice president of creative advertis-ing. He attended LAVC in 1968. He was a writer and editor on the college newspaper, the Valley Star, where he wrote engaging stories and commentaries about events of that

time. “It was because of this passion for writing for the Valley Star that the endowed scholarship in journalism was established,” said Guy Apollo, Spina’s husband of four years and life partner of 40 years. Former LAVC President Publishes New Memoir

LAVC Named a Tree Campus USA for the 7th Consecutive Year

LAVC Foundation Celebrates Ten Years of Awarding the Bernard Osher Scholarships

In 2008, philanthropist Bernard Osher made an initial gift of $25 million to the Foundation of California Community Colleges to establish an endowment that would provide scholarships to the 108 community colleges in California. He also incentivized the community colleges to match an additional $25 million. The Osher Endowment totals over $75 million and has awarded $1,000 scholarships to about 3,000 students annually.

LAVC students have been recipients of the Osher scholarships since 2008. To date, 113 Valley College students have received a $1,000 scholarship. Valley College is very grateful for the kind generosity of Mr. Osher!

Congratulations to Tyree Wieder, president emeritus of LAVC, and her husband Les Wieder, a retired thea-ter arts professor, for publishing a new autobiographical memoir titled Matzo Balls and Cornbread: A Love Story.

Matzo Balls and Cornbread: A Love Story was published in November 2017 and tells the story about two people of different backgrounds—Les is a white Jewish man and Tyree is an African-American woman—who made a life together and raised a family. It focuses on their family histories, experiences growing up, ca-reers, meeting, married life, and the wonders of parenthood.

Tyree Wieder is also former interim chancellor of the Los Angeles Community College District and former interim president of East Los Angeles College. She has received numerous awards for her work in the community, and was President of the Board of Library Commissioners for the City of Los Angeles.

Her husband, Les, who is an award winning theater director and playwright, is a past recipient of the Presi-dent’s Award from the NAACP for “his mission to advance the opportunities available to citizens of all races, genders, ethnic and social backgrounds.”

In February 2018, Los Angeles Valley College was honored with the Tree Campus USA® recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation for its commit-ment to effective urban forest management.

This is the seventh year in a row that LAVC has received this distinction, and holds the unique honor as the first California community college to be named a Tree Campus USA®.

Los Angeles Valley College achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s five standards, which include: maintaining a tree advisory com-mittee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance, and student service-learning projects.

LAVC’s urban forest comprises of more than 1,600 trees and was estab-lished by early faculty members of the college’s Biology department. It has a diverse mixture of trees and plants that not only serve as an educa-tional tool, but help to inspire a college-wide commitment to sustainabil-ity. In 2010, the college developed a Tree Master Plan to use as a guide-book for the future growth of its urban forest. The LAVC Tree Master Plan is available on the LAVC Urban Forest Web page.

Tree Campus USA, an Arbor Day Foundation program, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. The Tree Campus USA program honors colleg-es and universities for effective campus forest management and for en-gaging staff and students in conservation goals. Currently, there are 344 campuses across the United States with this recognition.

Greetings from LAVC President Dr. Erika Endrijonas Time flies when you’re having fun, which is the only way I can describe completing yet another year at Los Angeles Valley College. Working with an amazing staff and faculty is one reason, and their hard work, among other things, resulted in our Strengthening Working Families program, a partnership be-tween the Workforce Development program and the Family Resource Center, being named one of ten Bellwether Award finalists in the workforce category out of 1200 nominated. The Family Resource Cen-ter also received an $800,000 state budget “carve out” for 2018-2019 to expand services to student parents thanks to Assemblyman Adrin Nazarian. The LAVC Speech team continued its amazing track record at the state and national level, winning overall Silver as a Team with individual team members also bringing home numerous gold, silver, and bronze medals, including top honors for debate. Finally, LAVC student, Matin Ghavamizadeh, won one of 47 prestigious Jack Kent Cooke transfer scholarships which provides $40,000 for three years and up to $75,000 for graduate school.

Work continues on the Valley Academic and Cultural Center building; a Thermal Energy Storage Tank project to increase the cooling capacity on campus will begin by the end of Fall. Finally, the infamous bungalows have been fenced off and paperwork is in motion to finally get them torn down. Stay tuned!

The Los Angeles Valley College Foundation is only as strong as the donors who financially support it and the dedicated Board members who guide it. Thank you to everyone who helps the Foundation make a difference every day in students’ lives at LAVC.

LAVC Foundation Awards $186K in Scholarships and Stipends

In FY 2018, the LAVC Foundation awarded $186,000 in scholarships and stipends to 347 students. This amount is inclusive of awards in the Foundation’s scholarship pool as well as those from funds from its fiscal agency funds.

An awards program was held in August 2018 where scholar-ship recipients and donors attended. The LAVC Foundation wishes to thank all of its contributors for continuing to make annual donations to scholarships and awards. A number of endowed scholarships have also been established ensuring perpetual scholarship funding.

The Athletic Hall of Fame induction banquet was held on June 30, 2018 at Monarch Hall with over 230 in attend-ance. This year’s inductees included Coaches Gary Honjio in Aquatics and Gymnastics, John Becker in Football, and Doug Michelson in Basketball. Athletes included Sue Patterson McDonald in Track & Field, Eddie Baeza in Baseball, Jose Cortez and Jack Steptoe in Football, and the 1966 Men’s Swim Team. Inducted posthumously was Athletic Trainer Angelo Cimity.

Also announced that evening was the Athletic Endowment Goal was achieved. In the last few years, a group of alumni set a goal of raising $100,000 to establish an endowment that would benefit teams in athletics. The first of the endowment earnings were awarded in August 2018!

While the endowment goal was achieved, it does not mean the end of the fundraising campaign. If you would like to contribute to the Athletic Endowment, please contact the LAVC Foundation at (818) 947-2618.

Dear Monarch Family,

Los Angeles Valley College continues to move forward with

its growth and service to our students and the community.

Your LAVC Foundation is keeping in step with that growth.

In fiscal year 2018, the LAVC Foundation awarded over

$186,000 in scholarships and stipends to 347 students.

This amount comes from the scholarship fund as well as

funds held for various college programs. As you may know,

scholarships and awards play an important role in student

success. Scholarships are the strongest predictor in stu-

dent persistence, progression and timely graduation!

The Foundation will be conducting its first ever capital cam-

paign! The Steinway Piano campaign, which is featured in

this newsletter, is in the quiet phase trying to secure lead

gifts before going public. Prospects look very promising as

lead donations have already been received from Eric Bub-

bers and Sandra Welgreen, Imelda Padilla, the Studio City

Chamber of Commerce, and the Levine Family Charitable

Trust. We ask you to consider supporting this campaign.

Four new endowments have been established this past year

which include the Marguerite Marriott Memorial, the Angelo

Cimity Memorial, the Dale Michael Spina Memorial, and the

PASSO endowment. Altogether, over $155,000 in dona-

tions were received for our new endowments.

Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) was a subject

of much discussion this past year. Thanks to a $10,000

donation from Felipe Plascencia, the Foundation was able

to award the I Wish Scholarship as well as provide stipends

for students to pay for their DACA renewal filing fee.

As we move into 2019, I wish to convey my appreciation to

our friends and supporters. We can only get better with your

continued generosity!

Sincerely,

Raul Castillo

Foundation Annual Report

Dear Valley College Friends,

It may be surprising to you that a quasi-retired teacher and

past marketing executive is now in charge of the Valley College

Foundation. Well, it’s certainly is for me! But I have become

passionate about the Foundation’s mission to support Valley

College and its students, and I am very humbled and honored

to be elected to be your President. I want to take this oppor-

tunity to thank Eric Bubbers for having served as President. I

so appreciate his leadership and steering our Board in the right

direction for these past two years. Eric will also be stepping

down from District Bond Oversight Committee, on which he has

served on since 2010. This committee monitors the expendi-

ture of money for the construction and modernization of all the

colleges in the District, including Valley College.

The Foundation has outlined a roadmap for the next three

years that will allow it to play a significant role in the life of Val-

ley College. First, the Foundation has stepped in to acquire

four Steinway Pianos through a lease-to-own arrange-

ment. This was the start of the Steinway Piano Campaign. We

have already received some financial contributions and pledg-

es, but more are needed. LAVC has the distinction of being an

All-Steinway School, of which there are only 200 in total inter-

nationally. Ultimately, we will pay off our lease early and also

raise monies to establish an endowment to help maintain the

pianos.

Second, the Foundation will explore conducting another cam-

paign to provide program support for the Family Resource Cen-

ter (FRC). Long regarded by the City of Los Angeles, the State

of California, and other community organizations, as being both

unique and exceptional, the prestigious FRC has been provid-

ing various services for students who are also parents and/or

heads of households since it was established. The FRC’s annu-

al support comes from “soft monies”, or grants, that are provid-

ed on a year-to-year basis. Our plan is to establish a multi-

million dollar endowment that will provide the supplemental

funding to cover the FRC’s overhead expenses.

Lastly, Valley College is fast approaching its 70th anniversary

beginning in the Fall of 2019. The Foundation will definitely be

participating in this celebration – so stay tuned!

I want to thank you for your continuing support of the Founda-

tion! Our success as a Foundation is solely because of you.

All we accomplish would not be possible without you, our

friends and supporters. We are so very grateful!

Sincerely yours,

Pat Ballew

President
