Political NewsVenezuela Protests0 A series of protests, political demonstrations, and civil insurrection

began in Venezuela due to the country's high levels of violence, inflation, and chronic shortages of basic goods attributed to economic policies such as strict price controls. While protests occurred in January 2014, after the murder of actress and former Miss Venezuela Monica Spear, mass protesting began in earnest that February following the attempted rape of a student on a university campus in San Cristobal. The year's early months were characterized by large demonstrations and violent clashes between protestors and government forces that resulted in over 3,000 arrests and 43 deaths, Nicolas Maduro's government characterized the protests as an undemocratic coup d'etat attempt orchestrated by "fascist" opposition leaders and the United States.

of 20, according to a new report by Unicef on the prevalence of violence against children. About 95,000 homicide deaths were recorded among this age group in 2012.

0 The three countries with the highest homicide rates in the world among children and adolescents (aged 0-19 years old) are all in Latin America; El Salvador, Guatemala and Venezuela. The map below shows the rate per 100,000 population for all countries where data was available.

MedicineChikungunya virus0 The virus is mainly spread from person to person through mosquitoes. Scientists believe

the virus originated in 1952 in southern Tanzania. Chimpanzees or other animals were probably first infected. Mosquitoes that bit these animals became infected, then bit and infected people.

0 The virus can stay in a person's system for about a week or for years.0 When a mosquito feeds on an infected person, the mosquito can become infected and can

bite and infect others. What are the symptoms?0 Usually fever, rash, muscle aches, and joint pain.0 Headache and joint swelling can also happen.  0 When a person first becomes sick, they will think they have a flu-like illness.0 Symptoms first appear about 4 to 7 days after the biteThe disease is rarely fatal the disease can contribute to the cause of death.

0 Symptoms begin with fever, muscle pain and a sore throat, escalating rapidly to vomiting, diarrhea and internal and external bleeding, leading quickly to death. Health workers are at serious risk of contracting the disease and need to wear a protective suit covering their entire body.

Ebola virus disease (EVD) • Is described by the World Health Organisation

(WHO) as "a severe, often fatal illness in humans." It first appeared in 1976 in two simultaneous outbreaks – in Nzara, Sudan; and in Yambuku, in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The latter was in a village situated near the Ebola River, from which the disease takes its name.

• The disease is mainly found in tropical Central and West Africa, and can have a 90 per cent mortality rate. In the current outbreak the death rates are running at about 70 per cent.

0 Justin Bieber pencils of promises

0 The 19-year-old traveled to a remote village in Guatemala with the organization Pencils of Promise, a charity he's long supported that builds primary schools in developing countries like Nicaragua, Laos, Guatemala and Ghana.

And he didn't just watch: He helped sift concrete, lay down cinder blocks, and spent time playing with the children who will one day attend the school. "He developed a genuine connection with the kids there," says Adam Braun, the charity's founder and brother of Bieber's manager, Scooter Braun. "The children didn't even know who he was, which was part of the beauty of the experience. He got to be himself." Adds photographer and videographer Nick Onken, who documented the trip: "The kid loves people and deep inside, wants to help make the world a better place."

One school costs $25,000 to build and Pencils of Promise has raised $10 million since being founded in 2008.

0 "This experience changed my life forever," Bieber says of the trip. "It isn't about me, it’s about the kids, plain and simple. I'm sharing this story in hopes that the world will help me end the education crisis. I hope I can use my reach to change these kids' lives in return."

Science and Technology0 In recent years, Latin America has experienced sustained economic and population

growth. Due to this growth, energy demand in Latin American countries continues to rise and governments will need to develop a strategy to meet their energy needs in sustainable ways.

0 Offshore wind energy0 Although there are Latin American countries that have taken advantage of their

renewable resources in different ways–more than half of Uruguay’s energy is supplied from renewable resources—there is a technology that has not been fully considered: offshore wind.

0 Chile has great potential as an offshore wind resource, according to studies by researchers at the University of Chile. Although the Inter-American Development Bank conducted a study evaluating the potential of marine energy technologies along Chile’s coast, marine technology and wind power were not evaluated (1).The study, which was conducted using NASA satellite data was divided into three zones according to their potential. Zone B, which begins north of Taltal and goes to the Bio Bio Region, make up the most densely populated region, and therefore, the majority of Chile’s electricity consumption.

0 An amazing scientific0 Ezequiel Petrillo (pictured above) is an Argentine biochemist studying how

chloroplasts behave differently depending on the amount of light exposure. He is trying to understand how a plant self-regulates and adapts to different environmental conditions by employing alternative RNA splicing, a process by which a single gene can give rise to many different messenger RNAs. In plants, this is a novel direction for alternative RNA splicing. Work like Petrillo’s (and mentors of his such as Marcelo Yanovsky and Alberto Kornblihtt) represent a major step for Argentine science. Petrillo stresses collaboration. “I think that often only through collective efforts can we reach satisfactory results and generate more scientific knowledge,” he says.

Earthquake shakes Mexico, Guatemala0 A strong earthquake rocked much of southern

Mexico and Central America on Monday, setting off mudslides, damaging scores of buildings and disrupting communications vital to the relief effort.
