Target students

• Students who take their placement test during the last two weeks before classes begin and are Wi3 (need reading, writing and math developmental classes).

• Wi3 students who encounter financial aid or other difficulties during the first two weeks of the semester (during the drop/add period)

Objectives of Late Start Program

• Allow for enrollment for these students while increasing their chances of completion– Wi3 students registering within two weeks of semester

beginning have a course completion rate of 52% • Allow more time for these students to get their

Financial Aid in order prior to start of classes• Allow for these students to be better prepared for

classes and to have textbooks on the first day

Courses

• Reading and Study Skills courses start Week 5 and last for 12 weeks.– The reading class is a crosslisted level one reading and level two reading

section. Students are using level two reading textbooks. – Study skills uses a 10 week MyFoundationsLab code (First 4 weeks

math, last 6 weeks reading and writing).• Math course begins Week 9 and lasts for 8 weeks.

– All Developmental Math modules are 8 weeks long. – Math 11a + Math 11b = Prealgebra– Math 12a + Math 12b = Introductory Algebra– Math 16a + Math 16b = Intermediate Algebra

• All students were enrolled in an “a” math for the second 8 weeks.

Initial Meeting with Advisor

• Students go through the handout “Preparing for College in the Late Start Eligibility Program” with Kathy Haberer or Mary Hough.

• A tentative schedule is completed. (Student completes registration at MYLC orientation.)

Preliminary Data

• 21 students registered for the Late Start Program.• 19 students attended the mandatory workshop prior to

start of classes.• 17 students survived the purge for nonpayment.• 1 student accepted her financial aid and purchased her

books and then never attended.• 11 completed a final exam for the “a” portion of their

math course and 2 passed. These 2 were able to start with the “b” portion of the math course.

• 16 students attend class regularly.

Intrusive Advising

These students have a time gap between Reading and Study Skills classes used for intrusive advising sessions.1. Accessing online resources2. LASSI3. Discuss Math test re-take4. Career goals and schedule for next semester5. Discuss Reading and English test re-take
