Breast cancer is the second most common kind of cancer in women. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in American Indian and Alaska Nave women. American Indian and Alaska Nave women (Nave American women) have somewhat lower rates of breast cancer screening compared to white women. Among women ages 40 and older, 63 percent of Nave American wom- en and 66 percent of white women had a mammogram in the past 2 years. One reason for these somewhat lower screening rates may be access to care. Nave American women tend to live in areas that require travel- ing a long distance to get health care, including mammography. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Nave American women. Nave American women tend to have lower rates of breast cancer and breast cancer mortality than white or African-American women. How- ever, these rates vary according to where women live. Nave American women who live in Alaska have the highest rates of breast cancer (similar to non-Hispanic white women) and those who live in the Southwest have the lowest rates Breast cancer screening is important to all Nave American Women. Breast

Cancer:

What You Need

to Know www.cancer.gov

Cancer is a disease in which cells in the body grow out of control. A mammogram can help find breast cancer early, when it’s easier to treat. Talk to your doctor about how often you should get mammo-grams. Risk Factors

Gender (Men can develop breast cancer, but women are 100 times more likely to develop breast cancer than men).

Age (Getting older).

A personal history of breast cancer, dense breasts, or some other breast problems.

A family history of breast cancer (parent, sibling, or child).

Changes in your breast cancer-related genes (BRCA1 or BRCA2).

Getting radiation therapy to the breast or chest.

Being overweight, especially after menopause.

Eating Habits (Dietary factors such as high saturated-fat diets and alcohol consumption have also been implicated as factors that increase the risk for breast cancer)

Symptoms Some warning signs of breast cancer are:

A lump or pain in the breast.

Thickening or swelling of part of the breast.

Irritation or dimpling of breast skin.

Redness or flaky skin on the breast.

Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area.

Fluid other than breast milk from the nipple, especially blood.

A change in the size or the shape of the breast. What You Can Do Exercising regularly and eating a healthy diet consisting of fruits and vegetables and low in starchy carbohydrates, may help prevent breast cancer and breast cancer recurrence, according to studies released by the University of California, San Diego. The following foods may offer nutrients that promote breast health and boost your immune system:

Olive oil

Broccoli and apples

Garlic and the spice curry

Walnuts and ground flaxseed

Fish (salmon, mackerel, sea bass, and white tuna)

Orange fruits and vegetables (carrots, peppers, oranges, canta-loupe, sweet potatoes, and apricots)
