Mission: enhance understanding of the effects of changing climate and other natural and human impacts across the region and promotes the coordination of science-based actions to enable human and natural communities to respond and adapt to those conditions.

S-TEK: purpose and expected outcomes

Identify priority science and support needs (“priority topics”) through evaluation of landscape stressors and affected natural and cultural resources

the evolving knowledge acquired by indigenous and local peoples over hundreds or thousands of years through direct contact with the environment

Potential policy issues include:

Dialogue on shared conservation goals

Exchange of traditional and western science to directly benefit tribal issues and circumstances

Models for engagement of tribal membership and traditional practitioners of TEK

S-TEK Subtask: 2014 Science Funding Approach

In FY 2014, the Bureau of Land Management has provided approximately $600,000 to the GB LCC to fund partner-identified science needs. The Steering Committee has established the following guidance for allocating FY 2014 science funding in the absence of the overarching strategy this work group is developing:

Focus on fire and invasive species as they apply to sage grouse habitat ($450,000); and

Support tribal capacity-building and readiness for participating in ongoing GB LCC S-TEK Strategy development and implementation ($150,000).

The first meeting of the 2014 Science funding sub-committee was April 23.

Guiding Principles

Goal: Provide leadership and a framework linking science and management to address shared ecological, climate, and social and economic issues across the basin.

Objective: Develop landscape‐level information that can be used to focus conservation programs on the priority elements of the landscape most sensitive to change.

Objective: Evaluate and synthesize existing technical information, and identify and support the generation of information needed to fill gaps.

Objective: Support the development of scientific information, tools and technical products to inform and augment conservation decisions and actions by natural resource managers.

Objective: Coordinate application of geospatial and other information management technologies as necessary to plan, monitor, and evaluate activities and outcomes at various eco‐regional scales.
