Las MariposasLas Mariposas is a free leadership development program that builds girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. The program provides an “authentic” Girl Scout experience for elementary girls whose primary language is not English and who live in underserved communities, where lack of volunteers, transportation, and financial resources are often barriers to the traditional troop experience.

Nearly one-fourth of girls live in immigrant families in which one or both parents were born outside of the United States. Changing demographics in the U.S. indicate that girls will have different needs in the future.

During the 2016-2017 academic year, we will observe two of five outcomes which have been aligned with Girl Scouts of the USA in collaboration with the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University — Sense of Self and Positive Values. Outcome data will be available in fall 2017.

How it Works

Aimed at girls who use English as a second language, Las Mariposas integrates ESL instruction into traditional Girl Scout experiences, including opportunities to earn badges and participate in the cookie program. Elementary girls are given a safe, all-girl environment in which to practice their English skills without fear of embarrassment or ridicule. Las Mariposas is offered at school and community partner sites during 22 afterschool sessions held throughout the year.
