IcebreakersJoe Brady/Virtual FinlandMore than 80 per cent of Finland's foreign trade involves seaborne transport, and in winter cargo vessels rely heavily on theassistance of icebreakers to lead them safely to port. Finland has roughly 1,500 kilometres of coastline on the Baltic Sea andabout 60 ports. The Baltic is virtually an inland sea. Its northernmost parts freeze over every winter. In a very hard winter it ispossible for the whole sea to freeze over, although this rarely happens. But even if predictions about global warming change the pattern of ice formation in the Baltic, any change will come only slowly. So, without Finland's icebreakers shipping over much of the Baltic Sea would come to a standstill in winter. Read on, and see, this compact fleet - ever ready, ever reliable.

The icebreakers are owned and operated by the Finnish Maritime Administration, source of the following data. Twenty three of Finland's approximately 60 commercial ports are kept open throughout the year. During the winter months, these 23 ports are visited by over 9,000 ships carrying more than 27 million tons of cargo. The ships are assisted by nine icebreakers operated by the Finnish Maritime Administration. The nine icebreakers generate some 120 megawatts of thrust, enough to keep seaborne transport running in the teeth of

the bitterest winter. During a normal winter, icebreakers are in operation for a combined total of roughly 1,000 days, covering an aggregrate

distance of some 140,000 miles. They also tow ships a distance of about 20,000 miles for a total of 2,300 hours. Normally, the operational season for icebreaking extends from mid-November until the end of May. Because icebreakers keep them open, the European Union has classified Finland's sea lanes as part of its trans-European

transport network. The freezing of the Baltic Sea used to cause the closure of Finland's ports during the winter. In the days of sail this was an annualfact of life that had to be accepted. Then came steam power, marking the beginning of the end of Finland's hibernal isolation. Thepurchase in 1890 of Finland's first icebreaker, named Murtaja (English: breaker), opened a new chapter in the country'sconfrontation with winter ice.

Icebreakers are expensive ships to build and maintain because of the high technology incorporated in their special features andequipment. In the past they were laid up for several months a year, until the return of the ice, a situation that made no senseeconomically. The answer was the multipurpose icebreaker. The most modern of the Finnish Maritime Administration'sicebreakers are designed as multipurpose vessels, fully operational throughout the year. What do they do when there is no call forthem to assist ships approaching the Baltic ice? Well, they are designed, as the FMA explains, for demanding operations in openwater and heavy seas. For instance, they are capable of laying flexible pipes and cables, handling heavy anchors, acting as supplyand support vessels for oil drilling platforms and even hauling icebergs through Arctic waters. And now, the commercial break. If the thought of an Arctic ice adventure appeals to you, Finland has something to really writehome about. The Sampo, the world's only tourist icebreaker, operates on the northern Gulf of Bothnia, out of the port of Kemi inFinnish Lapland. Operated by Sampo Tours of Kemi, this former Arctic icebreaker sails from the middle of December to the endof April, offering cruises for individual travellers and for groups. In the words of the Sampo Tours website, you will experience:"the frozen Arctic landscape, the winter darkness, the crackling frost and clear starry skies with the Aurora Borealis, offeringvisitors a unique experience in the midst of untamed nature. In late winter the sun appears in all its glory, painting the landscape adazzling white - freshness and warmth to invigorate the traveller." Indeed. And when you are not on deck or out walking on thesea ice you'll be snug and safe on board.Published January 2002
