MANILA, Philippines - Malacañang said yesterday changing Pilipinas to “Filipinas,” as adopted by the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF), would be an interesting

discussion.

In a resolution dated April 12, which also went viral, the KWF decided to revive the use of “Filipinas” instead of “Pilipinas” to promote the official and modern name of

the country.

The commission said Filipinos could be more united with a better sense of history.

“Let us see what the various sectors’ reaction will be,” deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said over radio dzRB.

Valte said there is no letter “f” in the Filipino alphabet before and so Pilipinas was used.

Now that “f” is back, the commission deemed it fit to make use of “Filipinas” in seals, letterheads, notepads and other materials.

Valte said the issue has yet to be discussed with President Aquino.

The name of the Philippines is short for The Philippine Islands, derived from King Philip II of Spain in the 16th

century.

“Filipinas” used to be the official name of the archipelago but it changed in the course of history.

The name Philippines was officially adopted during the American period.

I support the idea to change "Pilipinas" to "FILIPINAS".

UrHONOR  •

PALITAN ang PILIPIN A S ng: BA Y ANG MAGILIW. Yan ang makabayan. Piipinas,

Thailand at

The Japanese are reading this article. Now, they also want theirs spelled

"JAFAN", and they will now be called Jafanese. Meanwhile, P-Noy will now bespelled F-Noy. Consistent, consistent.

disqus_scbiaMsZ78  •

another daang matuwid whatever. abigal valte aka nancy binay should have

something interesting to announce to compensate for her salary that we, the boss

of her boss, are paying.

give us a break!

another stupid notion .

rgf_md  •

As of now, Philippines

or Pilipinas is no big deal, especially to poor Pinoys who've got nothing to eat.

Does it really matter? To us Flips, "P" and "F" are pronounced or sound the sameif not interchangeably when spoken!!!

ManilaMan  •

Really? Or are you generalizing? How can P and F sound the same? I

hardly heard anyone called our former president FVR as Pidel even during

his term. Even the foremost Filipino poet was never called Pransisco

Balagtas. Pampanga's capital was never San Pernando. Cos like all names

in Filipino or Tagalog, they are never spelled or pronounced in Abakada.

Filipinas is a name, the name of Rizal's beloved country. But for all the

rest, like common nouns and stuff like that, the P takes precedence over

F.

So who wants to go to IFugao with me? :)

 1

ManilaMan  •

I will support this move. Its also more logical as we have been calling ourselves

Filipinos for the longest time and yet we call our place by a different name. Its like

being British from Great Vritain, or French(Français) from Prance. Imagine being

Singaporeans from Cingapore or Indonesians from Yndonesia. Btw, not only do

the Spanish and Latin Americans call Philippines Filipinas, Yndonesians and

Malays (Bahasa) also call this country Filipina with an F.

Its time to correct this error and make the Filipino language "consistent" again.

"Ako po si Francis Fernandez, isang Filipino mula sa bansang Filipinas."

 1

kerotoso  •

so,..what is good for that,..sigi

DeeEsspee  •

As the president said, this calls for a serious discussion. Can we try that,

kabayans?

Matt Jordan Ross  •

Bakit hindi na lang gawing Fhiliffines

 1

Waykeber  •

How about our coins and paper bills? They all have "Republika ng Pilipinas"

printed in them. Will they all be demonetized and replaced with new ones with

"Republika ng Filipinas"?

 4

DeeEsspee  •

Paper bills and coins are regularly but gradually recycled anyway and

according to careful scheduling by the Bangko Sentral and in coordination

with the mint and printer. Changing bills and coins design will not be a

biggie. But if the change is abrupt, and even with a 1:1 exchange of new

for old, we can expect a few hiccups. Other central banks and

international financial watchdogs will ask WTH is going on because this

practice usually signifies a regime change or political upheaval, or both.

We don't want to give that impression. We should keep in mind that PHPis also traded and speculated on in many markets. Giving others heart

attacks is not nice. :D

 3

ManilaMan  •

If it does require regime change, i sure hope they coincide it with

the impending charter change of lifting the economic provisions in

the country. Welcome to Filipinas, Asia's new economic tiger and

foreign investment capital.

DeeEsspee  •

Well, we do have constitutionl regime change every six

years when we choose a new president. It's only in Ameringlish where ''regime'' is a negative word used to

describe totalitarian administrations. Anyway, I like the name

. , ,

Filipino. Let's go all the way with the F's for consistency. F

this and F that and F me.. :D

 1

ManilaMan  •

A minor hiccup it would be, like the day the Filipinos woke up in

1967 to see "PISO" written on their peso bills. Regime change didnt

come until 5 years later. Or as simple as they day the filipinos

paraded and displayed the flag on June 12, 1962 instead of the

usual July 4th. 1

Mel Manalo  •

Gooo Filipines, Finoys, Finays, FNoy, baluttttt Fenoy!!

Ok

nito.

Filipinas will have an advantage over Pilipinas in the beauty contests and

sports/olympic parades since we will no longer be near the tail end.

 1

ManilaMan  •

Thats a good one. But remember, this is only to replace the Filipino

(Tagalog) word for Philippines, so most in the international community will

continue to call us by our English name "Philippines". Unless its hosted by

Spain or Latin America, Italy (where we're called Filippine) or Netherlands

(Filipijnen). :)

Guest  •

We don't have "F" in our alphabet. What are this so called "expurt's" in KWF

thinking. By changing the "P" to an "F" to unite unite the Pilipinos?, what flimsy

excuse by this Abigail Valte who's name is not even a Pilipino. Maybe by

changing the spelling of her surname name to Balte will make sense. Next this

KWF will demand that Pilipino language will be the medium of instruction in

school. Instead of going forward, our officials are pushing us backwards. Better

think of doing something good for the country KWF instead of wasting our yime.
