Synopsis of “The Soloist” film
Steve Lopez is a journalist working for the L.A. Times. He is divorced and
works for his ex-wife, Mary, an editor. One day, he heard a violin being played
beautifully. When Lopez first met Nathaniel, he was playing a violin with two strings
and talked on the Beethoven statue. Lopez approached him to investigate and they
started to make conversations to know each other. During the conversation that
follows, Lopez learned that Nathaniel Ayers was a homeless schizophrenic and he
once attended the Julliard (one of the most prestigious performing arts schools in the
world).
Lopez was curious as to how a former student of such a prestigious school
ended up on the street, he contacts Juilliard but there was no record of Ayers
graduating from it exists. Though at first figuring a schizophrenic who was talented
with a violin was not worth his time, Lopez soon realized that he had no better story
to write about. Luckily, he soon learned that Nathaniel did attend Juilliard, but
dropped out after two years.
One reader is so touched when she read the Lopez’s article about Nathaniel.
She sent him a cello for Nathaniel. Lopez brought it to him and Nathaniel was very
surprised when looking at a beautiful cello. Unfortunately, his tendency to wander
puts both Ayers and the cello in danger, so Lopez talked him if he wanted a cello that
must have come to LAMP community (a place of homeless people). The next day,
Nathaniel accepted the Lopez’s enticement and he was seen playing a cello for the
homeless in LAMP.
Lopez tried to get a doctor to help Nathaniel. He also tried to talk him to live
in an apartment, but Nathaniel refused. One day, Lopez invited him to view a
rehearsal concert. After seeing a reaction to music played in a concert hall, Lopez
persuaded another friend, Graham Claydon, a cellist, to rehabilitate Nathaniel through
music. The lessons go well, Nathaniel was enjoy and interested in the cello lesson.
Suddenly, Nathaniel was angry when Claydon talked about God. He said that Lopez
was his God.
Lopez’s article that was about Nathaniel become so famous, Nathaniel was
gave the chance to perform a cello. Sadly, he loses his temper when other sound
commented in his mind. He attacked Claydon and leaves the hall. That incident
convinced Lopez’s doctor friend to get Ayers some help. But when Nathaniel knew
that he was diagnosed as schizophrenic, he threw Lopez out of his apartment and
threatened to kill him.
While speaking with Mary, Lopez realized that not only had he changed
Nathaniel’s life, but also Nathaniel had changed him. Determined to make amends,
Lopez brought Nathaniel’s sister to L.A. for a visit. Later, while all watch an
orchestra, Lopez thought how beneficial their friendship had been. Nathaniel still
heard voices, but at least he no longer lived on the streets. In addition, Lopez has
helped Nathaniel’s relationship with his own family.

1 First time Lopez met
Nathaniel in the park
near Beethoven statue.
Lopez asked him that he
only got two strings
while Nathaniel was
playing a violin.
Lopez: You only got two strings.
Nathaniel: All I want to do is play
music, and here's the problem that
I'm having right here. This one's
gone, this one's gone, this little one's
out of commission. But you get that
in Cleveland public schools. A lot of
military statues in Cleveland. A very
military-oriented city…

2 Lopez asked Nathaniel if
he came from military or
no. Nathaniel answered
his question, but his

very curious about
Nathaniel because he
thought that a talent
musician had mental
illness.
Lopez: Is that where you're from?
Nathaniel: …You're not gonna get
musicians on parade there. You got
Severance Hall there. You have The
Music Settlement. Ohio State
University. Whereas in Los Angeles,
you have Los Angeles PD, you have
LA Times, you have Los Angeles
Lakers. Those are armies, too.
Military regimentation,
experimentation, Roman gable,
Roman Catholicism, Colonel
Sanders, but this guy right here
is...the quarterback with the
orchestra. Now the cello could back
this guy with the same moves, but the
cello can't be concert master. No. He

6 Lopez saw Nathaniel in

driving a car. And then,
he decided to meet
Nathaniel for an
interview.
Lopez: Hey, Nathaniel.
Nathaniel: I've been searching for
Mr. Beethoven, but he's slipping
away like a dream. I'm trying to get
back into shape, but I don't have any
sheet music. Beethoven's String

Lopez was very surprised
and happy to meet
Nathaniel again because
he had been looking for
Nathaniel at the same
place as before (in front
of Beethoven statue), but
he did not find Nathaniel
there. He interviewed
him to get some
information. Lopez
wanted him as subject in
his column.
Lopez: I noticed that you've moved.
Nathaniel: Well, it's beautiful here,
because you can play music and
have pigeons clapping as they take
off, and right there is The Los
Angeles Times Building…

And I wanna write a story about you.

Lopez: Anyone I could contact?

Nathaniel: Family? Miss Floria
Ayers, my mom. She's a beautician.
Beauty is art. Music is beauty. I don't
do hair. I do my own hair, but
obviously, my mom does everybody's

explained and asked
Nathaniel to go to LAMP

would get the treatment

surprise. He said
something to describe the
beautiful cello.
Nathaniel: Laying in there like a pig

Really, only the greats. Yo-Yo Ma,
Jacqueline du Pré, and the coolest
cucumber of them all is Janos

the cello, Lopez asked
him again to go to the

a cello for him. It made
Nathaniel thought that
the cello would be ruined
if it was handled by
Lopez.
Nathaniel: No, no, no. You'll break
the bridge. You'll put water in it,
you'll drown her…
Lopez: That's what I'll do?
Nathaniel: …It will be ruined…
Lopez: Why would I damage it? I
gave you the damn thing.

Nathaniel after he saw
someone was overdose in
the LAMP.
Spontaneously, he
decided to find
Nathaniel. In a few
minutes, he met
Nathaniel and he decided
to spend the night with
him. Nathaniel explained
his vision. Lopez listened
and recorded what
Nathaniel said.
Nathaniel: You know, Mr. Lopez, my
vision... I hate to admit it, but I'm
gonna have to be like Beethoven.
Just do what he did and just die. My
vision is not far-off stuff, just
basically getting across the street
safely. Honor thy father and mother,
and then, hopefully, the music will
take care of itself. That's really all
you can do. I mean, when you think
about it, there's not much that you
can do other than that.

16 After Nathaniel
explained his vision, he
asked Lopez about the
writers. Lopez answered
Nathaniel’s question, and
then Nathaniel continued
to tell about musician.
Nathaniel: Do you think of writers
the way I think about musicians?
Lopez: I write for a living, and it's
not like it used to be.
Nathaniel: I love thinking about
musicians. I imagine Beethoven and
Mozart in that window where the
light is, and they just hunger and
they thirst like we do. It's angelic. I
believe these children of God are
gonna be okay tonight. They're
gonna sleep and dream as humans
do. (00:52:24,341) (Data 16)

17 One day, Lopez gave a
gift for Nathaniel that he
was invited to view a
rehearsal concert in
Disney-Hall. Nathaniel
so excited heard it.
Nathaniel: Well, what's the date
today?
Lopez: No, the third Symphony.
Nathaniel: I'll cause a scene. I don't
wanna cause a scene. I don't wanna
stick out or anything like that. So it's
just... It's impossible. It can't happen.

was very angry about it.
Lopez: Oh, no. We have an entire

21 The next day, Nathaniel
visited to Lopez’s office
with his cart. Lopez
asked him the something
what Nathaniel needed.
He explained one by one
his items that were
carried in the cart.
Lopez: You need something?
Nathaniel: A man only needs what he
can carry, Mr. Lopez, and I have all

Nathaniel: Mrs. Floria Ayers, Miss
Jennifer Ayers. And then there was
Mr. Nathaniel Anthony Ayers Sr. He
was a big man. He had big hands. I
have very small hands. Fit around a

apartment was the safe
place for him. He cleaned
a left butt on the room
because he knew that
Nathaniel would not be
interested in that. When
Nathaniel entered the
room, he found the dead
fly. It made Nathaniel
afraid that he would be
like a dead fly if he
stayed in the apartment.
Lopez: Nathaniel, the door locks. A
fly only lives 12 days.
Nathaniel: A fly only lives 12 days.
What if in 12 days, someone walks
through that door and murders me?
And I don't care about this Claydon
thing, either. Walt Disney Hall.
Disney Duck doesn't make a
difference. I don't need any of that. If
I'm gonna take a lesson, I should
take the lesson in the tunnel where I
can hear the city sounds and not be
locked off from life, locked off from
the world. In the tunnel I can hear
the music the way it's supposed to be
played. Not in this place, there's no
