Last Day of School for 2019
Dear Parents and Carers, Term 2 has disappeared in front of our eyes and it is time for our two week mid year break. This Friday is our last day of school for two weeks. Students return to school on Tuesday 23rd July.
All families should have received their child’s Semester 1 report earlier this week. I want to acknowledge and thank every teacher at Lakemba Public School for the time they spend preparing the student reports. It takes many hours of extra work to ensure that the report you receive is an accurate representation of your child’s learning and progress.
Student reports are important documents in your child’s educational life. Please keep them in a safe place so you can refer to them when you need them. Over the past few weeks we have had many families ask for copies of their child’s reports from previous years. Reissuing reports uses unnecessary time and paper resources of the school when the report has already been issued. They cannot be issued immediately. Often students moving to High School are asked to supply some of their primary school reports so making sure you keep them in a safe place makes your job much easier.
When you are reading your child’s report please remember that students who receive a C grade are working at the appropriate level and should be praised for their achievement. It is not bad for a child to receive a C grade. Many families talk to teachers about their child not receiving an A or B grade in their reports. Some families believe that their child will move from a C to a B or A in their next report. In most cases this is not the case. Students who receive a B or A are working above or well above the Stage expectation.
The holidays are an important time for students and staff to rest. Many students and staff have been sick over the last few weeks. Please take the time during the holiday break to rest and recover and prepare yourselves for a busy time of learning in Term 3. Best wishes for a safe and relaxing holiday.
Kind regards, Jann Price
Staff News Mrs Martins will be taking maternity leave from the beginning of Term 3. She goes with our best wishes for a restful time as she and her husband await the birth of their baby. We are excited to announce that Mr Gow will be working with 3/4M for the remainder of 2019. Mr Gow has worked casually at Lakemba on a number of occasions this year. In preparation for working in Stage 2 Mr Gow spent a day last week working with the Stage 2 team as they planned for Term 3. It is anticipated that he will spend another day with Mrs Martins and 3/4M this week. Mrs Martins and Mr Gow are working closely to ensure a smooth transition for our students.

Mrs Martins was also the relieving Assistant Principal in Stage 2 this year. Following an Expression of Interest process conducted within the school two weeks ago I am pleased to announce that Ms Edwards will be the relieving Assistant Principal in Stage 2 for the remainder of 2019. We welcome Ms Edwards to the Leadership Team .
External Validation Each year the Department of Education nominates a group of schools to participate in an external validation process. This process provides an opportunity for schools to judge and discuss their practice against the School Excellence Framework. The school must provide evidence to support their judgement. The final part of the process is a discussion with peer Principals and their Director about their practices. This is not a pass or fail process but a valuable opportunity for schools to review their practices and make recommendations about what they need to do moving forward.
Lakemba Public School is currently preparing for external validation on 24th September. We are excited to be able to present to our panel the fantastic things we do and gain feedback on other strategies and programs that might be beneficial to us.
Student Sickness Students often return to school after an absence with a medical certificate. Please be aware that students must not return to school during the period of time the doctor has indicated they need to be off school. Often students return a day or two before they should according to the doctor’s directions on the medical certificate. This is not appropriate as the student may still be contagious or need more rest to fully recover. Students who return to school before their doctor’s certificate states they should will be sent home.
If your child has recovered and they are ready to come back to school you must visit the doctor again and ask for a letter that states they are well enough to return to school.
Camp Towards the end of Term 3 Stage 3 students have the opportunity to take part in a camp with Belmore North, Belmore South and Hampden Park Public Schools. There are only 30 places available and many students have already paid a deposit. This is a reminder that the total payment for camp ($360) is due by Friday 16th August.
Over the last few weeks parents and carers have been going straight to classrooms and not coming to the
office. For everyone’s safety visitors MUST report to the office before going into classrooms or the playground.

School as Community Centre News Best wishes to everyone for the holidays - stay warm and keep well. The Community Centre programs all start when the children come back – from Tuesday 23rd July.
Some holiday ideas: Cockatoo Island (in Sydney Harbour) is a fun place to visit. It is FREE to explore – just catch a ferry from Circular Quay. There are BBQs, picnic areas and great views as well as the opportunity to learn more about Sydney’s history. Great for older children especially.
The Art Gallery of NSW has FREE art making workshops activities for families in the holidays daily between 11.00 and 3.30. The Art Gallery is a short walk from St James train station in the city and right next to the Botanical Gardens which are also fun to explore.
NEXT TERM: Beginning School Well: Any Rohingyan families who have a 4 year old child who will start school next year are invited to enrol for this special program which will start on Wednesday 21st August. Please see Wendi or ask Miss Houdalakis for details.
Step Into Work: We will be running a five week program for women who are wanting to find meaningful paid work and set goals for their future. It starts on Wednesday 7th August and will be from 9.30 – 12.00. Detailed support with applications, resumes and interview skills is included. See Wendi or Madeleine to apply for a place.
My Time: This group provides an opportunity for parents of children with a disability or a chronic illness to find support from others in a similar situation. Take time for you while your young child is engaged in play, learn about services and make new friends. Starts next term on Monday 29th July from 12.30-2.30 each week.
Self Care for Rohingyan mothers: come and learn about ways to look after yourself! Childcare available. Starts next term Friday 2nd August (week 2, term 3) 9:30-11:00 am for 6 weeks.
Little FREE Library box: Just a reminder that the little red box on the fence at the Centre is stocked with pre-loved children’s books which you are welcome to borrow – or keep. Please just take one at a time. You are welcome to keep them or return and borrow a new one after you have read with your child. We also welcome donations of books your children may have grown out of.

Term 4 Staff Development Days The last two days of each year are called School Development Days (SDDs). These are pupil free. This year the SDDs are scheduled for Thursday 19thDecember and Friday 20thDecember. While these days are crucial for staff development, they are not at an optimal time of year to put learning into practice.
Approval to complete 4 x 3 hour sessions of professional learning throughout the year rather than the two full days at the end of the year was given by the P&C earlier this year. I’d like to thank our staff and P & C who are in full support of this initiative to achieve the best outcomes for our children.
As a result of this variation to the SDDs, there will be no teaching staff at school on Thursday 19th December and Friday 20thDecember. While these are pupil free days anyway, we are required to inform our community that pupils are not able to attend on these days.
What’s been happening in Stage One?
In Term 2, 1H have been learning ‘Earth and Space’. 1H started to
create snow in a science experiment. Students loved this lesson as it
was hands on and they cooperated with each other. They followed all
the steps to create their own snow!
In 1W as part of our science ‘Earth and Space’ unit we have been
learning about seasons and investigating different elements of winter.
We have created a real life representation of snow using bi carb soda
and shaving cream. It was messy and a lot of fun!
In 1A we are learning about biodiversity and focusing on the impact
humans have on the survival of elephants. We celebrated Kids 4 the
Planet by painting the inside of our elephant with our handprints. The
message we want to get across to everyone is that the life of an
elephant is in our hands. Let’s protect this beautiful animal together!
This term, 1K have been using Scratch Jr during Learning Centres to help us
begin to code. We have been learning the basic skills of coding and have
now begun to add backgrounds and create algorithms to make our sprites
move and talk. We have connected our learning from Science and
Geography with coding and have made ‘Day and Night’ and ‘Weather and
Seasons’ animations. We have enjoyed using Scratch Jr and are looking
forward to learning more about coding.
This Term, 2V have been learning about different techniques when
writing and the various forms of writing. We have focused on
imaginative, persuasive and informative writing. 2V have shown a
growing enthusiasm for writing. Through the L3 Writing Process we have
been taking ‘authorship’ by publishing our writing into our Writing
Journals. With the use of digital technologies we have also been
writing responses to images and various books.
In 2C we have been focusing on using a variety of resources to consolidate
our learning. In our Science ‘Earth and Space’ unit we used shaving cream,
food dye, ice and other materials to conduct exciting hands on experiments.
These pictures show the rain clouds and
fake snow we created with our partners.
Through this, we learnt different life skills such
as working in a group, problem solving and
communication. We enjoyed these
opportunities and are excited for our Science
unit next term.
