I will continue to share important pieces of information as they come to my attention, but I’d like to begin focusing my letters on the development of our students during these “middle years.” As we all know, life can get busy and it’s not always easy to remember or understand why children behave the way they do in adolescence. Rapid changes in physical, intellectual and emotional growth coupled with a new awareness of the outside world and how they fit into it can help to explain many smaller things like forgetfulness or unexpected outbursts. Using examples, tips and reminders, I hope to create more of an awareness and understanding with parents, teachers and our middle school children. We will also begin to include safety reminders from our Vice Principals in our newsletters. Along with massive changes in development and growth, these are the years children gain more and more independence and freedoms. In this world of technology, internet and social media our students are exposed to new concepts & ideas on a daily basis - both positive and negative. As parents, our own youthful experiences play an important role in how we each individually raise our children, but much of the information presently available to children is nothing like what we were exposed to in adolescence. We hope this can be another avenue in our continued efforts to support you as parents, not just with the broad scope of cyberspace, but in all areas of concern for our children. We look forward to the start of 2017 and seeing everyone back refreshed and ready to go. Have a wonderful winter break and enjoy the holidays with your friends and family! Happy Holidays! Can you believe we’re in the middle of the holiday season already? Which also means that we are almost finished with the first semester of the school year - it went so fast!

Our 8th graders are already getting registered for high school. It doesn’t seem like very long ago that these same students were wide-eyed 6th graders, fresh from elementary school. And now they’ve got their sights set on the next adventure!

Thank you to everyone involved with making our Renaissance Wet N Wild 1st Quarter reward day so successful! We have such wonderful students, teachers and staff and I’m so appreciative that they work so hard to see our Sons and Daughters strive for excellence. I grew up in El Paso, Texas.I have taught over 25 years. The subjects taught in my teaching career include reading, English, and I have been a librarian. I am National Board Certified librarian.I teach 8th grade English Language Arts and study skills for grades 6-8.The reason in choosing middle grade to teach is I enjoy working with all grade levels, and I needed to take a "refresher" with this age and grade level.I think Lahaina Intermediate chose me, and I am excited to be here since I am new to the island. I relish the challenge of being an English teacher.I have a husband and a daughter who is my pride and joy. No pets at the present time.

Rosa Roberts, 8th Grade English Language Arts

I grew up in Hana, Maui.

I taught for two years in Hana and one at Baldwin.

I teach 6th grade creative writing and 7th grade ELA.

I chose this age group because middle school is fun.

I chose Lahaina because the school has a good reputation.

My family consists of my boyfriend, our 2 cats and our puppy.

My hobbies include reading, hiking, traveling and pretty much anything adventurous.

I plan to stay at LIS and teach English and creative writing. My boyfriend and I will get married and travel when we are not working. I will also finish my novel.

Lily Morningstar, 6th Grade Creative Writing

    and 7th Grade ELA.

As for hobbies, I love to read and hang out at the beach. Books are my passion. In the future, I plan to get back to a library position since that is truly my passion in reaching out to students and teachers alike. I love promoting literature, integrating technology, and assisting teachers on campus in this supporting role. I feel I can reach more students in this capacity.

I am originally from the island of Jamaica. I have been teaching for over a decade. I hold certifications in Hawaii in SPED, Reading and Social Studies. I have taught in college, high school, middle and elementary school settings. I have worked as a Math/Science and RTI Coach, Teacher Mentor, Clinical Educator, Scored teacher portfolios for National Boards, Reading Teacher, Social Studies Teacher in Gifted and Regular education.

Here at LIS I am SPED Inclusion 6-8 grade Science and Social Studies. I got my start in middle school and believe that middle school years are crucial years academically and socially. I would like to help middle school students to transition smoothly into high school. I think Lahaina chose me.

I have 3 sons no pets. I love to read and write poetry and stories. I hope to become a famous author.

    Solothea Sparkes, SPED 6-8th Grade

football and wrestle all the way through High School. I got to play baseball into my first year of college. When I wasn’t playing sports I was trying to draw all my favorite album covers and comic books. Street Art was a huge influence on my development as an artist. I have been working in the Art field as printmaker and graphic designer for 5 years. I also teach the after school keiki program for the Lahaina Arts Society. I feel truly blessed to have been able to turn one of my passions into a career! This is my first year teaching intermediate school coming from high school and I am stoked to be part of the LIS ohana. When I am not teaching I like cruising the beach, hiking, and surfing.

    Zachary Hale,Art 6th Grade

Games N Grinds Contact Todd Hayase or Lori Koyama

Our Renaissance Wet N Wild 1st Quarter reward day was an amazing afternoon, not just for students, but for our staff and volunteers as well. One of the highlights of the day was the dunk tank...a handful of of our staff members were persuaded by the students (with encouragement from DJRon) to enter the dunk tank...some multiple times! We love our teachers and staff here at LIS! Thank you to everyone that helped to make the day so fun, a special shout out to our parent volunteers, you’re the best! We really appreciate these parents who stay involved and give time if they have it to our school.
