CHRISTMAS AROUND THE WORLD

These are some of the many different ways in which people around the world celebrate

Christmas.

One thing we all think of at Christmas time is the eating of good food. Turkeys and plum

puddings are most often associated with Christmas dinners in England and America. But

quite different foods are eaten at Christmas time in other countries.

In Finland, for example, pickled herrings are often eaten with turnips. In Poland, however,

people eat nothing at all on Christmas Eve until they see the first star appear in the sky.

Then they have their special dinner. During the meal, straw is laid on the floor and table

to remind people of Jesus‟ birth in the stable. A place is always left empty at the table in

case Mary and the infant Jesus should call and ask for shelter. In France, people often

leave candles burning and food and drink on the table for the same reason – in case

Mary and her baby come by that way.

In Sweden fish, followed by a milky rice pudding, is the main ingredient of the traditional

Christmas dinner.

Some of the oldest Christmas traditions concern the decorating of houses with evergreen

branches, holly, ivy and Christmas trees. In ancient times people believed that

evergreens had magical powers, for they were green when the other plants were bare.

Holly and ivy were thought of as especially important because they bore fruit (berries) in

winter time. Mistletoe was thought of as so powerfully magical that even today it is not

allowed in churches as decoration.

These ideas about evergreens are found all over Europe, particularly in Germany where

the custom of decorating Christmas trees seems to have begun. Today, German children

are not allowed to see their Christmas tree until Christmas Eve. Usually it is decorated

secretly by the adults in the family. It is a specially exciting moment when the door is

opened and the children are allowed to see the tree beautifully decorated and with the

presents all around it. Even in Australia, far from the cold dark winters of Europe, the

custom of decorating trees has been taken up. And Christians in India today decorate

mango or banana trees instead of fir trees, for Christmas time!

Carols are joyful songs telling of the birth of Jesus. Carol singing is one of the customs that

is popular in many countries. In Hungary processions of carol singers make their way to

church on Christmas Eve. Three girls, dressed as the Three Kings, head each procession.

They wear white robes and tall bishop‟s hats.

In Greece, boys go caroling on Christmas Eve. They accompany their singing with the

beating of a drum and the tinkling of triangles. If they are lucky, and sing well, they may

be given money or sweets as a reward.

In Italy, children sometimes dress as shepherds and travel from house to house, singing

songs and playing on pipes.

Some Christmas-time customs are not at all well-known outside their country of origin. For

example, in Sweden and Denmark, Christmas begins with the feast of St. Lucia on

December 13th. On that date the youngest girl in the family is given a long white dress to

wear and on her head she wears a crown of evergreens and candles. The candles are lit

and the girl goes round distributing sweets and biscuits, carefully balancing her bright

crown.

Many of our Christmas customs are very old – older even than Christmas itself. For, long

before the birth of Jesus, people in Europe held special festivities in December to mark

the middle of winter. They lit bonfires and candles and looked forward to the return of

spring. The ancient Romans also held feasts and gave gifts at this time, the end of the

year. Some of these customs have survived into our modern Christmas.

Probably very few people in any country think about why they follow these customs.

Traditions are followed simply „because they were done in the past‟. But all these

different Christmas beliefs bring people together to share happiness and peace – and

that is the real message of Christmas.
