The “Beautiful Lady,” as they called her, was seated on a stone, her elbows resting on her knees, her face buried in her hands, weeping bitterly. She rose, calming the children’s fear by her reassuring look and maternal voice. She told them the cause of her tears: disobedience to the laws of God and of the Church, blasphemy, failure to keep the Lord’s Day and lack of prayer. Along the border of Mary’s dress were roses of all colors and, on a fine gold chain a crucifix more radiant than anything else in the vision. On the left of the crucifix hung a miniature hammer and on the right, pincers or pliers. Although she did not explain the significance of these implements, it is thought that they represent the meaning of the La Salette message - Reconciliation. Sin hammered Jesus to the cross; but just as the pincers pulled the nails out of His wrists, penance and prayer reconcile the world to God. Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette

All Are Welcome

On September 19, 1846, Mary, the Mother of God, appeared to two shepherd children on the slope of a mountain in the French Alps, near the village of La Salette.

Around the world, the La Salette Cross has become the “logo” of Mary’s message - “Be reconciled to God.”

The Shrine Gift and Book Shop is open throughout the year. Stocked with a variety of religious articles, the store offers the best selection in the Upper Valley area for all occasions. Founded in 1951, La Salette Shrine, near Lake Mascoma, is

a place of prayer and meditation in a unique, natural setting of

peace and beauty. Our Shrine is located within Lower Shaker Village,

founded in 1782. The Shrine provides a quiet, peaceful atmosphere where visitors get in touch with the message of Mary’s Apparition to the children. Through our programs, individual and group pilgrimages, and special prayer services, visitors take time away from the world’s anxieties, and after their shrine visit is over, return home refreshed and with new meaning to their lives. Although there is no charge for visiting the Shrine, freewill contributions maintain its programs and facilities.

The Cafeteria, located next to the Gift Shop, is open daily. The Café houses a cafeteria, kitchen, meeting rooms and restrooms. Picnic facilities are plentiful for families and groups of all types who come to spend a day in prayer and peace. A pavilion is located on the hill and is used as a place of prayer services and relaxation.

At the entrance to the Shrine is a statue of Our Lady of La Salette surrounded by 26 flags. These colorful flags represent the countries where the La Salette missionaries are now serving God’s people and making known Mary’s message of Reconciliation. She invites all her children to “Come near.”

The beautifully landscaped hillside lends itself to prayer and meditation.

Through the replica of Our Lady’s Apparition, the Rosary Pond,

the Stations of the Cross, the Calvary scene with the Holy

Stairs, and the Peace Walk, visitors touch the reality

of God’s presence in their lives.

CHRISTMASFESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

The heart of any Shrine are the Eucharistic celebrations offered in community. Large crowds gather on Sundays and on Feast Days to participate in these celebrations and other liturgical services. We offer a Saturday Vigil Mass at 6:30pm year-round. From Memorial Day through the end of September, we have additional services. Please consult the weekly bulletin, website, and/or calendar of events for more information. Our main chapel is located directly behind the Gift Shop/Guest House.

This worship space located on the far side of the parking lot facing the Cafeteria is used for many of our prayer and worship programs.

Formerly the Seminary chapel, it is located beside the nearby Enfield Shaker Museum. Worth a visit to view the large stained-glass windows depicting the Virgin Mary’s Seven Sorrows, and other windows and mosaics depicting her Apparition at La Salette in France.

Spiritual companioning, days of prayer, and other programs for individuals and groups are services provided through the Center. The guest house currently has accommodations, including kitchen, for up to 8 people. Individuals, families, or small groups are welcome to use these facilities for private retreats, meetings, and relaxation.

Covering nearly all 30 acres of the Shrine grounds, 45,000 lights illuminate the wintry sky over the Shrine, proclaiming each December that Jesus is the “Light of the World.”
