the annex; • $168,958 mechanical and direct digital control for

the organ; • $73,056 sanctuary lighting and audiovisual upgrade; • $237,069 for other urgent repair and maintenance

To date, The Great Heritage—Bold Future Campaign has raised $1,158,440 in pledges and $626,024 in cash

The plan is to submit the final grant application by September 1, 2018. The grant application requires that we also list cash gifts and pledges we have received since October 1, 2017. All gifts that were received prior to that date for The Great Heritage—Bold Future Campaign will not count towards the matching requirements. The National Fund for Sacred Places will match every $2 we raise with $1. For example, if they grant us $200,000, we will have to raise $400,000.

The Campaign Committee is currently conducting a quiet phase of the campaign with a goal of $300,000 in gifts and pledges to submit with our proposal on September 1. The committee believes a critical factor in the grant process is to demonstrate that FPCcan raise the matching monies. The audience is brought into the prison cell where Bonhoeffer awaits execution and listens to his struggles with evil, injustice and God. In the play, Bonhoeffer tells of the profound influence of fellow Union Theological student, Frank Fisher, an African-American friend who introduced Dietrich to the blight of racism in America.

Prisoner Bonhoeffer expresses moral outrage against the Nazi treatment of Jews and explains how that outrage led him to become involved in the German resistance movement, a commitment that would result in his being executed by hanging on April 9, 1945.

A free-will offering will be collected. Sponsored by the Acts II Seminary of the First Presbyterian Church of Santa Fe

About Al StaggsAfter serving as a parish minister for more than 20 years, Al began a new career as a performing artist presenting his highly acclaimed, original one-person dramatization entitled A View From the Underside: The Legacy

of Dietrich Bonhoeffer to churches, synagogues, colleges and organizations throughout the world. He has performed at Chautauqua Institution; Trinity Church, New York; the National Cathedral in Washington, DC; the International Arts Festival in Caux, Switzerland; Riverside Church, New York as well as more than one hundred colleges and seminaries and hundreds of churches representing a wide diversity of denominational affiliation.

During the mid-1990’s, Al began expanding his repertoire to include original interpretations of the lives of Clarence Jordan, Walter Rauschenbusch, Oscar Romero, Martin Luther, Roger Williams, Martin Luther King, Jr., Thomas Merton, William Sloane Coffin and William Stringfellow.

In 2008, Al published his first book, a collection of poetry entitled A Pilgrim in Rome: Cries of Dissent, accompanied by endorsements from Walter Brueggemann, Bishop John Shelby Spong and Bill Moyers.

3Fall 2018

Back in late 2015 a task force was formed to review the organization of the church’s ministry and after many months of study, discussion, and congregation-wide listening sessions, a new design was approved by Session. The concept is simple: Bring together all the committees, groups, and ministries under the fours areas of the church’s life so that these groups know each other and can better coordinate activities and events.

Wisdom Circle is our spiritual life—worship, music, Acts II (Adult Education), children and youth ministries, Bible studies, and spiritual direction.

Mission Circle is mission, service, giving and outreach beyond our walls. This includes the Child Development Center, a mission of the church.

Jubilee Circle is our life together in the congregation, serving and caring for each other, and providing fellowship opportunities. This includes the Deacons and Second Family.

Stewardship Circle provides all the ways the church is supported in its ministry and mission. Personnel, Finance, Facilities, and the Annual Pledge Drive are among the groups which fall in this circle.

Again, the concept is simple, and designed to facilitate communication and to better understand the breadth of the church’s ministry. It is not another layer of bureaucracy but designed to ease the burden on Elders since they are no longer required to chair a committee and serve on session, a responsibility we felt was just too great a burden. Elders serving on session are assigned to one of these circles and will serve as your connection to that circle.

Each circle will meet only twice a year, in the summer/fall and in the winter/spring, after the 11 am service in Pope Hall, and will include food. The purpose of these gatherings is to introduce you to our many ministries and encourage you to get involved wherever your interest lies.

The Stewardship Circle starts it off on Sunday, August 26, followed by the Mission Circle on Sunday, September 23.

So now you know more about Ministry Circles. I encourage you get involved and enjoy the many ways the church serves the world and our own community.

Many blessings – Harry

Dear Theophilus,

Inaugural Santa Fe Soul Festival

Spiritual Pathways

The Santa Fe Soul Festival (SFSF) kick off on Sunday, August 12, at First Presbyterian Church was a grand success—with close to 180 attendees energetically keeping beat with the beautiful gospel singing. The gospel concert featured God’s House Choir and Opera Tenor Elliot Page. Pastor Harry welcomed concertgoers, and Festival president Madeleine Wright explained the SFSF mission of educating and presenting African American Arts & Culture to the Santa Fe community. To this end, the concert was preceded by a participatory lecture demonstration on “African Influences on the Black Church” by Dance Professor Shani Sterling and Music Educator Ikechi Ojore.

Fireside Chats with the Mystics: Tuesdays This fall begins our fourth year of weekly gatherings! After an August break, we will resume meetings on Tuesday September 18, 5-6pm in the Rendon Room. The wisdom and faith of Elizabeth Seton will shape our meditation and holy conversations. Newcomers are always most welcome. For more information contact Linda Loving at [email protected].

If you are looking for something to read during our break, consider “Altered Traits: Science Reveals How Mediation Changes your Mind, Brain, and Body” by Daniel Goleman and Richard J. Davidson.

Thanks to Jenny Harland, Jeannie Bowman, Christine Vogel and Elise Packard who continue to share leadership responsibilities with Linda Loving.

Weekly Meditation GroupFireside Chats with the Mystics has just started a new focus: Mother Theresa’s wisdom and faithfulness is now guiding our spiritual growth and meditation time. We gather every Tuesday, 5-6pm, in the Rendon Room and newcomers are always most welcome! No book or preparation is needed – just come with an eagerness to connect with the Holy through soulful conversation, silence, and reflections on selected passages from the mystics who have preceded us on the journey. This group has been gathering for 2-1/2 years now! Some folks come weekly; some, more occasionally. Each gathering can “stand on its own.” For more information, or to get the code for entering the building, contact group convener Linda Loving at [email protected].

Spiritual Formation News

The Journaling as a Spiritual Practice class, after meeting each Friday in the month of July, is now meeting each last Friday of the month. The class considers new ways to approach writing from the soul, sharing some of our work, and journaling in the quiet of the church Sanctuary. We welcome newcomers! Life’s Companion by Christina Baldwin, is the text with which we base our lessons, but is not required for attending class. Bring your journal and come write with us. Our next class will meet at 11:30am in the Rendon Room on Friday, August 31. Please join us.

Westminster Presbyterian Hosts Contemplative SilenceAll faiths are welcomed to share in Contemplative Silence at Westminster Presbyterian on Tuesdays from 10:30-11:30am. It’s a time for silent prayer or meditation for everyone.

GHOST RANCH RETREAT

Faithful Resistance – Gospel Visions in Disquieting TimesSaturday, September 8 – Sunday, September 9

Begins 10:30am Saturday morning and concludes with Sunday lunch. We will spend our time envisioning ways that we might become the new apostles in a challenging world. This envisioning also includes ample time for rest and reflection.

Cost is $100 per person (based on double-occupancy, plus three single hermitages) includes one night at Casa Del Sol, a charming, historic hacienda built in the 1930s, and three meals.

Interested? Please contact Rebecca in the church office. Though the original reservation deadline was August 9, spots may still be available.

Lending LibraryThe lending library in the lobby has been busy with books coming in and going out. If you think there’s nothing new, check again. We keep receiving interesting books. As a gentle reminder, bring books that you have found interesting and would like to share.

If you are culling your home library and have a large number of books, please take them to the public library or a resale store. We have limited space.

Take a book, read it, then share it with a friend or bring it back to the lending library. There is no pressure – no time limit.

Session Highlights – While Session met the months of April, May and June most of the heavy lifting for financial and organizational matters had been accomplished in the first quarter of the Session Year, which now begins the first of February each year.

A number of committees that were missing a chair were appointed and approved by Session during the second quarter. Bill Eklund has accepted the chair of Facilities; and Rick Andrew and Diane Buchanan will co-chair the 2019 Stewardship Campaign. Plato Karayanis and Diane Buchanan continue to co-chair the Great Heritage – Bold Future Campaign (GHBF). The fund-raising efforts of the two campaigns will be combined during the last part of 2018.

Session passed a motion from the GHBF Campaign and Finance committees to allocate and commit (from cash in hand) to the Mission component of the campaign. Recognizing the three-year cash needs of the two recipients, we approved $25,000 per year for three years to Adelante; and $25,000 to CDC (thus providing CDC with a third year to supplement the two years of scholarship dollars on hand). Final allocations will be made at the end of the campaign.

The Partnership Agreement between FPC Santa Fe and the Presbyterian-Reformed Church of Sagua La Grande (Cuba) has been renewed for a period of five years.

Drew Hill attended the June meeting representing the Youth Connection and reported on an idea he and his friend Chanelle have to “spread environmentalism.” They requested permission to hold a movie night at FPC in Pope Hall and sell refreshments. The proposed movie is “Racing Extinction” and any monies raised will be donated to The Wildlife Conservation Network.

We received a preliminary report from Bill Adrian (Facilities Manager) and Bill Eklund (Facilities Chair) regarding the AOS Building Conditions Report and the actions required in the next few months to finalize the projects that will be part of our application for funds to the National Fund for Sacred Places.

Session has been studying the Book of Confessions starting with the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed. We are changing our focus to the study of relevant current events “what’s happening right now.”

Two years ago when I called Pastor Harry and asked if there was anyone I could give a ride to church on Sundays, he replied, “As a matter of fact there is someone who recently stopped driving. Her name is Kathleen Banks. I will introduce you on Sunday.” Now you may have benevolent thoughts about my offer to give someone a ride but I had my own motive. I don’t like going to church alone.

I remember exactly where she was sitting as we approached the pew. My first impressions were those of a gracious, unpretentious, and kind woman (among other qualities.) Her voice took its sweet time as she said she would be happy to have me as “her driver.”

One fall day after church rather than go to lunch, which was our regular routine, we drove to the ski valley to see the trees turning. During that drive I learned the most about Kathleen – her four children, her parents, her Oklahoma roots, her college days, her passion for art, the loss of her young husband, and her love of the New Mexico skies and clouds.

Her chuckle, her blue eyes, her sentences beginning with, “Well…” her love of the birds in her yard, her stories of the bunnies eating all her geraniums – these seemingly small things enriched my every Sunday. She gave more than she took. She was a gentle soul, a steady soul, a strong soul.

A few hours with a friend each Sunday reminded me what matters. Listening.

A few hours with a friend each Sunday reminded me what gives life meaning. Helping one another.

Thank you Kathleen for sitting with me at church so I didn’t have to be alone. It was an honor. Thank you for your gentle lessons. Thank you for blessing me with your presence, for when two are gathered in Christ’s name…

Second Family is a beautiful opportunity to open yourself up to the unexpected gifts – and there are many – of both giving and receiving.

Kathleen took her time with things.

She laughed at herselfShe rarely complainedShe did not judgeShe chuckled a lotShe was a lover of nature. She was an appreciator of creativityShe was an optimist

Welcome New MembersDavid and Jordan Smith (Not pictured)

“We are embracing on this journey to teach our children the “true” values of Christ—to look inward, love yourself and your enemies, and share that love with others,” said new member Jordan Smith.

Jordan and husband, David, moved their family to Santa Fe from Costa Rica, with the birth of their second daughter. David, who is “deeply concerned about the growing socio-economic divide in this country, and the threat it represents to democracy,” is very appreciative of the messages and sermons at First Presbyterian.

Jordan added, “We enjoy the service format and the openness First Presbyterian has to other faiths and communities.”

David and Jordan are co-founders and directors of CAVU, a Santa Fe-based environmental non-profit dedicated to “providing people with new insights on complex human and ecological problems through video and the aerial perspective. Together with local voices and authentic storytelling these new perspectives empower people to solve large scale problems of environmental degradation and climate change in their own communities.”

“We work to serve our community and humanity via film and conservation,” said Jordan. “We have worked in impoverished communities around the planet and are concerned about poverty.”

The Smiths have two daughters, Niva and Eleanor.

The Youth Connection

FPC Youth Experience First Mission Trip

The Youth of FPC have been very busy this summer! Along with our wonderful retreat at Ghost Ranch, four members of the Youth Connection were put hard to work on their first FPC mission trip. The group of four plus two leaders were commissioned on June 3 during Sunday worship, and then headed to a beautiful Presbyterian summer camp outside of Taos called Camp Loma Verde.

To create a defensible space from fires, we were tasked with clearing brush within a 30-foot radius from all of the buildings. In addition to all the good work we did at the camp, we helped the “Not Forgotten Veterans” clear out an acequia on their property.

Though we worked really hard for three days it wasn’t all work at Camp Loma Verde. On the last two days everyone got to travel to the Rio Grande Gorge and Taos Pueblo to explore and have fun.

Our wonderful youth were joined by groups from all around New Mexico, even one reaching as far Farmington. It was great fun to see old friends and to make new ones as we worked and played together.

Everyone in the Youth Connection thanks you for all of your support at our art gala, garage sale, bake sale, and for your wonderful donations. Without your help we couldn’t have done any of it.

Lily Bair (l) says “Ghost Ranch is a place where you can strengthen relationships with existing friends as you build relationships with the new people you meet. And at night when you are in that ‘thin place’ where there are fewer barriers between heaven and earth you see things more clearly and feel closer to God.” Leah Mitchell, Judi Haines, Drew Hill, Sadie Hill and Brian Ortiz share the moment.

Ghost Ranch Becomes Youth Connection Tradition

Youth Week at Ghost Ranch is rapidly becoming a “tradition” for FPC’s The Youth Connection, a special sanctuary for fellowship, adventure and most significantly for spiritual growth and faith building.

The youth thank God and the members of FPC for giving them this special opportunity to grow in their faith, and to witness to others what Jesus Christ means to them personally.

Shown with Sadie Hill (f), youth co-leader Bill Humphreys (back), Drew Hill and Brian Ortiz, Leah Mitchell calls Ghost Ranch her “happy place where I have grown closer to God and strengthened the bonds with the people I love.
