Traditionally, the ceremony embodies the extinguishing in succession of the candles and other lights on the altar and in the church , thus casting the sanctuary into darkness. At the end only one candle remains burning . This light is removed for a short time , symbolizing Christ' s three days in the tomb. The light is then returned and spreads its light through the disci ples symbolized by the choir. Men of the congregation will participate with the selected readings. United Methodist Palm Sunday will see two major events: Com- munion Breakfast will be held at the Congregational Church on Palm Sunday, March 19 at 7:30 a.m . The guest speaker will be another Dr. Henry Whyman , a former district superintendent and former executive of the United Methodist City Society . Dr. Whyman will bring a brief message of some work being done by Christians in one of the greatest mission fields in the world - New York City. Tickets are only $1.25. "Gloria ", by Vivaldi , will be performed by the choir at the 9:30 and 11 a .m. services on Palm Sunday. It is a major work of about 20 minutes length . Our choir has already begun work on it , and will present it in p lace of the sermon. Maundy Th u rsday, March 23 will be celebrated with a special Upper Room Service of The Lord' s Supper . Communion will be served in the sanctuary around tables. All are invited to this special commemora tion of our Lord' s gift to us at 8 p.m. Easter Sunday will be marked with two completely i den tical services. There will be no church school that day, so that families may all attend church together. There will be a children ' s sermon at both services as well as infant care at both hours . The choir will sing at both services. Following the children ' s sermon , the littlest ones may go out to view a special movie wh ile the older children remain with their families for the sermon .
