MOODLE Moodle is a free, online Learning Management system

enabling educators to create their own private website filled with dynamic courses that extend learning, any time, anywhere.

Meets the needs of a learner, instructor and an administrator. Used for blended learning, distance education, flipped

classrooms Innovative features like Calendar and Grade book Based on the social constructivist theory in pedagogy

Learners actively co-construct knowledge Interoperable by design to enable integration of external applications

and information onto a single Moodle platform3

HOW MOODLE WORKS Front page of Moodle site has information about the establishment (this can

be customized) How users join Moodle depends on their establishment; they might be given

logins, they might be allowed to make account themselves Moodle’s structure is organised around courses. Teachers can present their

learning resources and activities to students. Normally, it include central sections where materials are displayed and side blocks offering extra features or information

The contents of a course can be used by one teacher or shared by a group of teachers

STRIKING FEATURES About 20 different activities available

• Forums, glossaries, wikis, assignments, quizzes, choices(polls) etc

All of us are potential teachers as well as learners• in a true collaborative environment, we are both• Many of the activities in Moodle are designed to allow

students to control common content, such as forums, wikis, glossaries, databases, messaging and so on. This encourages students to add to the total course experience for others

There is no teacher or student role• Everyone who logs into Moodle has no special privileges

until they are allocated roles by the administrator according to their needs in individual courses or contents. 6

STRIKING FEATURES All users can have their own customizable dashboard. A logged in user can access areas of Moodle such as

their courses or profile from the Navigation block and Administration block. What a user sees in these blocks depends on their role and any privileges granted them by the administrator.

Give emphasis to collaborative effort Very much useful in corporate sector, where each

corporate can create their own establishment and their employees across locations can contribute and collaborate

Moodle Community forums Get support from the community, share ideas and meet

others in a community of your preferred language from the list

DRAWBACKS

9

Not user friendly The users should be technically sound to get all the functions

right How many different establishments can it support at

the same time?

EDMODO   Edmodo was created to bring education into a 21st century

environment, when two school district employees set out to bridge the gap between how students live their lives and how they learn in school

Three separate users – students, instructors and parents The Edmodo network enables teachers to share content,

distribute quizzes, assignments, and manage communication with students, colleagues, and parents

HOW EDMODO WORKS The teacher has to create a course for which he will be given a

code. Students has to join the course by entering corresponding

valid codes Once a student joins the course, he is given a parent code so

that his parents can also join and see his progress. Instructors can add contents, post assignments and quizzes.

DRAWBACKS

15

Students may use technology as more of a social networking site than as an educational tool. Students may want to participate in more social conversation than academic.

It is difficult to filter what students write on each other’s wall. Inappropriate and non-academic content can easily be written on a student’s main page.

Learner’s will easily be able to share and access other student’s files. This could lead to ethical issues in cheating and copying of others’ work.
