ANYONE, ANYTIME, ANYWHERELehigh will once again face one of the nation’s toughest dual meet schedules. The Mountain Hawks’ win over Arizona State evened their record against teams ranked in the USA Today/NWCA Top-25 at 3-3. Both of this weekend’s opponents spent time in the Top 25 earlier this season. Lehigh also owns a 21-20 win over Drexel, which recently entered the Top 25 for this season.

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENTSThe return of three injured starters to Lehigh’s lineup pro-pelled the Mountain Hawks to a big 22-13 win at No. 8 Arizona State Feb. 9. Juniors Scott Parker, Cortlandt Schuyler and Ryan Preisch all returned after missing time with Parker and Preisch competing in duals for the fi rst time since early December, while Schuyler was sidelined for two weeks. All three wrestlers won their bouts against the Sun Devils, highlighted by Schuy-ler’s 11-3 major decision over former NCAA Champion and All-American Jason Tsirtsis. Parker battled back for an overtime win over Ali Naser at 133, while Preisch posted a major decision over Kordell Norfl eet at 184. Lehigh built an early 13-0 lead and won six of ten bouts in the dual at Arizona State.

SENIOR SEND-OFFLehigh will recognize its fi ve-member senior class prior to Sun-day’s dual with Pittsburgh. The class includes three fi fth-year senior wrestlers, one fourth-year grappler and manager Kacie Bogar. Here are some notes on the four wrestlers in Lehigh’s class of 2018.

Darian Cruz 110-18 record, 2017 NCAA Champion, ‘14 and ‘17 All-American, ‘16 and ‘17 EIWA 1stCamden Fischer 34-25 record, 18 career bonus winsDrew Longo 40-36 record, 3x Southern Scuffl e place winner, wrestled at ‘15 EIWAsJonathan Mele 31-29 record (20-20 at Lehigh), 6-9 dual record

POWER OF 10Lehigh’s victory at Arizona State was its 10th dual win this season, marking the 19th consecutive season that the Mountain Hawks won at least 10 duals. The victory also snapped Arizona State’s 10 match winning streak and was Lehigh’s second dual win this season over a team ranked in the top 10.

HOLDING CORTJunior Cortlandt Schuyler has emerged as Lehigh’s top option at 149. Schuyler defaulted with an injury in Lehigh’s Jan. 21 win at Army West Point but returned to action with an impressive 11-3 major decision over Arizona State’s top 10-ranked Jason Tsirtsis that gave the Mountain Hawks a 13-0 lead over the Sun Devils. Schuyler scored an early takedown and two-point near fall with a throw and racked up an impressive 5:11 riding time advantage. While Schuyler owns just a 7-8 record this season, fi ve of his seven wins have come against wrestlers who either have been ranked or are currently ranked in InterMat’s top 20 at 149. The win over Tsirtsis moved Schuyler back into the national rankings.

TWO CAPABLE FRESHMEN AT 197Lehigh has enjoyed the luxury of having capable deferred freshmen Jake Jakobsen and Chris Weiler share time at 197 this season, with both wrestlers enjoying strong moments. Jakobsen owns a win over Penn’s ninth-ranked Frank Mattiace and has two pins while placing eighth at the Southern Scuffl e. Weiler has a pair of top 20 wins along with some narrow losses against ranked foes, while eight of his 11 wins have produced bonus points. Weiler captured a head-to-head matchup with Jakobsen at the Edinboro Open and earned the start at Arizona State, clinching the dual for the Mountain Hawks with a technical fall victory.

SECOND COACHES PANEL RANKINGS ANNOUNCEDThe NCAA released the second of four Coaches’ Panel rankings and the fi rst RPI for the 2017-18 season on February 8. The Coach-es’ Panel rankings will be one of the tools used as part of the selec-tion process to determine the qualifi ers for the NCAA Champion-ships. A panel of coaches ranked the top 33 in each weight class. Lehigh has wrestlers ranked in the top 33 in all 10 weight classes with Chris Weiler replacing Jake Jakobsen at 197 in the second ranking. Ryan Preisch also joined the second ranking at 184 as he was not eligibie for the fi rst ranking due to inactivity. Wrestlers need a minimum of 17 Division I matches to appear in the RPI.

BONUS, BABY! Lehigh’s ability to generate bonus points has keyed the Mountain Hawks’ 10-3 dual record and nearly led the Brown and White to an upset over No. 1 Penn State. The Mountain Hawks have won 89 of 130 bouts in dual competition (68%) and have scored bonus points in 44 of those 89 wins (49%). Lehigh has 14 falls in dual competition, with junior Scott Parker leading the way with four, senior Darian Cruz adding two and eight others each adding one. The Mountain Hawks had just two falls in 14 duals last season (Ryan Preisch vs. Drexel, Randy Cruz vs. Virginia Tech).

TOP OF THE MOUNTAINDarian Cruz won Lehigh wrestling’s 28th individual national championship last March, capping a 31-2 junior campaign with his title at 125. Cruz won his second straight EIWA title and avenged his most recent loss to Minnesota’s Ethan Lizak with a 6-3 win in the NCAA fi nals to win Lehigh’s fi rst national title since heavyweight Zach Rey in 2011. He was also named EIWA Wrestler of the Year. A two-time EIWA Champion and two-time All-American, Cruz went 5-0 to win the 125-pound title at the Southern Scuffl e, picking up his 100th career victory in the process. He now owns a 110-18 career record and is riding a 41 bout winning streak. Cruz will bid to become Lehigh’s 17th three-time All-American and its fi rst two-time national champi-on since Darryl Burley (1979, 1983). The last Lehigh wrestler to win NCAA titles in consecutive seasons was Mark Lieberman, who did so in 1978 and 1979.

CRUZ CLIMBING THE LADDERWith a 5-0 showing at the Southern Scuffl e, senior Darian Cruz became the 16th member of Lehigh’s 100-win club. With fi ve wins post-Scuffl e, Cruz is up to 110 wins, ranking seventh on Lehigh’s career wins list. Cruz needs one wins to tie Steve Cassi-dy ‘95 for sixth place. Jon Trenge ‘05 holds Lehigh’s career wins record at 133.

SCOTTY STEPS UPComing off a deferred year in 2015-16, Scott Parker enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2016-17, posting a 20-5 record and win-ning an EIWA title at 133 before joining Darian Cruz in earning All-America honors with an eighth place fi nish. Parker had an impressive 16-2 mark in the regular season and came back strong after missing time with an injury suffered in the fi nals of the Southern Scuffl e. He is now a two-time NCAA qualifi er with a 52-18 career record. Parker also won the Scholar-Athlete Award for Lehigh at last year’s Lewis Wrestling Dinner and was a member of the NWCA All-Academic Team. He posted three wins over ranked opponents at the Journeymen Collegiate Classic, a showing which earned him the Hammer Award as the event’s outstanding wrestler. Parker opened this season with eight wins in eight bouts and returned to Lehigh’s lineup with a sudden victory win over Ali Naser in the Arizona State dual.

DRIVE FOR FIVELehigh’s roster features three fi fth-year seniors, including two who have already earned their undergraduate degrees. Drew Longo earned his degree in IDEAS (Integrated Degree in Engi-neering and Arts and Sciences) and is pursuing his Master’s in Management. Jonathan Mele earned his degree in Finance and is now studying in the Technical Entrepreneurship program. Darian Cruz is fi nishing up his degree in English.

A STRONG FALL IN THE CLASSROOMLehigh wrestlers enjoyed a strong fall semester in the classroom, with 17 Mountain Hawks posting a grade point average of 3.20 or better last semester. Sophomore David Pipa led the Mountain Hawks with a perfect 4.0 semester in behavioral neuroscience. Sophomore Chase Gallik (3.94 in civil engineering) and junior Scott Parker (3.93 in fi nance) were not far behind, giving Lehigh three wrestlers over 3.9 in the fall. Gallik leads Lehigh with a 3.91 cumulative GPA. Eight of the 17 wrestlers with a 3.20 or better in the fall have wrestled in a dual meet already this season.

LEHIGH-PITTSBURGH CONNECTIONSLehigh head coach Pat Santoro wrestled for the Panthers from 1985-1989, under the guidance of the late Rande Stottlemyer, who retired following the 2012-13 season and passed away last month. Pittsburgh’s only four-time All-American, Santoro amassed a 167-13 record in four seasons for the Panthers, and won national titles at 142 in 1988 and 1989. A three-time EWL Champion, Santoro is also the Panthers’ career leader with 43 falls and posted an incred-ible 97-3 record over his fi nal two seasons. Pittsburgh assistant coach Drew Headlee returned to his alma mater in 2014 after two seasons as Lehigh’s volunteer assistant coach. First-year Panthers head coach Keith Gavin is also a Pitt graduate. After graduation, Gavin trained and competed in freestyle with the Lehigh Valley Athletic Club (now Lehigh Valley Wrestling Club) before moving on to coaching positions at Virginia and Oklahoma.

HOME SWEET HOMELast time Lehigh competed in Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall, the Mountain Hawks cruised to pair of EIWA victories over American and Navy Jan. 12-14 to kick off the 2018 portion of its dual meet schedule. The Mountain Hawks won a com-bined 18-of-20 bouts on the weekend with eight bonus point victories and outscored the Eagles and Midshipmen 70-5 over the two victories. Senior Darian Cruz went 2-0 on the weekend with a pair of falls to move into the top 10 on Lehigh’s career wins list. Junior Cortlandt Schuyler knocked off a pair of na-tionally-ranked wrestlers at 149, wins that moved him into the national rankings.

CRUZ WINS TITLE TO LEAD LEHIGH AT SOUTHERN SCUFFLESenior Darian Cruz won the 125-pound title to lead the Moun-tain Hawks at the Southern Scuffl e, Jan. 1-2 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Cruz went 5-0 across the two-day tournament, picking up his 100th career win with a second period pin in his opening round match and scoring bonus points in his fi rst four victories. As a team, Lehigh scored 102 points to fi nish third for the third straight year. Eight of Lehigh’s 16 entrants placed in the top eight, with three others fi nishing just one victory shy of place-ment. Sophomore Jordan Kutler joined Cruz as a fi nalist but dropped a 4-0 decision to Penn State’s Mark Hall in the fi nals at 174. The Mountain Hawks had two place winners at 165 with junior Gordon Wolf placing fi fth and senior Drew Longo claim-ing eighth. Other place winners included freshman Luke Karam (sixth at 141), junior Ian Brown (seventh at 157) and freshmen Jake Jakobsen (eighth at 197) and Jordan Wood (eighth at 285). Fourteen of Lehigh’s 16 entrants won at least one match.

MEANWHILE, IN CHICAGOWhile Lehigh sent 16 wrestlers to the Southern Scuffl e, 10 Moun-tain Hawks competed at the 55th Ken Kraft Midlands Cham-pionship, Dec. 29-30 near Chicago. Deferred freshman Dylan Ammerman led the way for the Mountain Hawks, pinning his fi rst two seeded opponents to reach the quarterfi nals at 184 and eventually falling one win shy of placement. Also competing for the Mountain Hawks were juniors Camden Fischer and Thomas Murray, sophomores Paul Dunn, Ryan Pomrinca, Joe Lobeck and Kyle Gentile, and freshmen Matt Parker, Dan Moran and Jimmy Hoffman.

BEEN THROUGH IT BEFORELehigh’s roster features a solid mix of experience and young talent. While the Mountain Hawks have 19 freshmen (deferred and true combimed) on their 2017-18 roster, Lehigh also features a pair of returning All-Americans and EIWA Champions in NCAA Champion Darian Cruz and Scott Parker, and a total of fi ve wrestlers who have qualifi ed for the NCAA Championships at least once. In addition to the returning All-Americans and EIWA champions, Lehigh’s returning NCAA qualifi ers include juniors Ryan Preisch and Gordon Wolf and sophomore Cole Walter. Three other Mountain Hawks (Ian Brown, Kyle Gentile and Drew Longo) have represented Lehigh at EIWAs.

THE THREE CAPTAINSHead coach Pat Santoro has named three captains for the 2017-18 season. Fifth-year seniors Darian Cruz (Allentown, Pa.) and Drew Longo (Ardsley, N.Y.) and fourth year junior Scott Parker (Sellersville, Pa.) will lead this year’s squad. Longo is serving as a captain for the second straight year.

LOTS OF LOCALSSeveral Lehigh wrestlers didn’t have to venture far from home to wrestle collegiately for the Brown and White. Senior Darian Cruz and freshman Luke Karam both wrestled for nearby Beth-lehem Catholic High School, the same program that produced Lehigh head coach Pat Santoro. Sophomore Charlie Sell (Bangor) and freshman Dan Moran (Northampton) are also from the wrestling-rich Lehigh Valley. Deferred freshman Jake Jakobsen hails from Stroudsburg, which is part of District XI and three Mountain Hawks: junior Scott Parker, sophomore Kyle Gentile and freshman Matt Parker wrestled for Pennridge High School, which is located just south of the Lehigh Valley.

MOVIN’ ON UPTwo returning Lehigh starters are wrestling up at new weight classes. Sophomore Jordan Kutler went 13-1 as a freshman including a Southern Scuffl e title at 157 before running into late-season weight issues. He bumped two weight classes to 174. Junior Ryan Preisch enjoyed a breakout season at 174, going 25-6 overall, fi nishing second in the EIWA and reaching the All-America round of 12 at the NCAA Championships. Pre-isch is now up at 184, his third weight class in as many seasons (165 and 174 in 2015-16 and 2016-17). Kutler and Preisch are a combined 26-5 this season. Kutler is 18-3, while Preisch returned to Lehigh’s dual lineup at Arizona State after missing nearly two months and posted a major decision win. Both wrestlers picked up key wins over top fi ve-ranked opponents in Lehigh’s victory over Michigan.

BRAND NEW HEAVYLehigh has enjoyed a run of quality heavyweights under Pat Santoro, beginning with NCAA Champion and three-time All-American Zach Rey, All-American Max Wessell and last year Doug Vollaro, who reached the round of 12 in his senior campaign. Deferred freshman Jordan Wood has taken the reins at heavyweight and owns a 13-5 record and No. 12 ranking. Wood went 11-3 competing unattached in open tournaments last season, highlighted by a runner-up fi nish at the prestigious Midlands Championships. The Gilbertsville, Pa. native was Lehigh’s Deferred Eligibility Wrestler of the Year last season. On the freestyle circuit, Wood was a Cadet World silver medalist in 2014 and represented the United States at the Junior World Championships in 2016.

MEN IN THE MIDDLELast year 165 was one of Lehigh’s deepest weights, with four different wrestlers seeing action in duals and all four winning at least one dual match. With three of those four wrestlers return-ing, 165 is once again Lehigh’s deepest weight. Junior Gordon Wolf is 6-3 in duals and is ranked by InterMat, while sopho-more Cole Walter, a NCAA qualifi er a season ago, wrestled in Lehigh’s other three duals. The Mountain Hawks also have fi fth-year senior Drew Longo, who represented Lehigh at 149 in the 2015 EIWA tournament and has seen a fair amount of action at 157 and 165 over the last two seasons. For the second straight year Lehigh had two place winners at 165 at the Southern Scuffl e as Wolf fi nished fi fth and Longo placed eighth.

PACKING THE HOUSEA Lehigh home dual meet-record 9,896 fans witnessed Lehigh’s 23-19 loss to No. 1 Penn State Dec. 3 at PPL Center in Allentown. The record crowd saw Lehigh race to a 15-0 lead behind pins from Darian Cruz and Scott Parker, only to see the Nittany Lions rally to win six of the fi nal seven bouts, claiming several close decisions in the fi nal four bouts to seal their 35th straight dual win. Four of the top fi ve home dual crowds for Lehigh have now come against Penn State. The previous attendance record was 5,909 for Penn State’s visit to Stabler Arena on Feb. 12, 2016. The Grace Hall re-cord attendance is 4,650 from a Lehigh-Navy dual on Feb. 4, 1967.

LEHIGH HAMMERS NO. 4 MICHIGANLehigh capped its opening home weekend with a dominant 27-8 win over then-No. 4 Michigan Nov. 19 inside Leeman-Turner Are-na at Grace Hall. The Mountain Hawks won eight bouts against the Wolverines, including three wins over nationally-ranked op-ponents. Junior Scott Parker earned his second pin of the season, while junior Ian Brown upset nationally-ranked Alec Pantaleo to help stake Lehigh to an 18-0 lead at intermission. Sophomore Jor-dan Kutler and junior Ryan Preisch added wins in battles of top 10 wrestlers at 174 and 184, respectively. The win over Michigan was Lehigh’s third against a top-5 team in 10 seasons under Pat Santoro. The Mountain Hawks also topped No. 1 Cornell in 2010-11 and No. 3 Ohio State in 2014-15.

A FRESH STARTSeven deferred freshmen have now season action in duals for the Mountain Hawks. Three debuted in Lehigh’s opener at Bucknell with Luke Karam dropping a close decision at 141 and Jake Jakobsen and Jordan Wood winning decisions at 197 and 285, respectively. Chris Weiler made his dual debut at Princeton before picking up his fi rst dual win over No. 20 Stephen Loiseau of Drexel. Nick Farro debuted with a win at Penn. Aaron Burkett also subbed for Darian Cruz against Edinboro. Most recently, Dylan Ammerman competed at 184 at Virginia Tech. Lehigh had three true freshmen compete in attached competition last season with Kyle Gentile manning 184 in the postseason and Joe Lobeck fi lling in for Scott Parker midseason at 133. Brandon Paetzell was the starter for Rutgers at 125 last season before transferring to Lehigh.

CRUZ, WOLF COMPETE IN ALL-STAR CLASSICSenior Darian Cruz and junior Gordon Wolf represented Lehigh in the 52nd NWCA All-Star Classic, Nov. 5 at Princeton’s Jadwin Gym. Cruz held an early 2-1 lead in his exhibition bout versus Oklahoma State’s Nick Piccininni but a six-point reversal was the difference in an 8-5 loss. Wrestling close to his hometown of Lawrenceville, N.J., Wolf took on former youth teammate May Bethea of Penn in one of two showcase bouts. Wolf trailed 8-5 in the second period before hitting a six-point move of his own to rally or a 17-9 major decision. The Mountain Hawks have had at least one wrestler compete in the NWCA All-Star Classic in fi ve of the last six seasons. Lehigh wrestlers now own a 17-16 record in main card bouts at the All-Star Classic.

Bethlehem native Pat Santoro enters his 10th season as the Lawrence White Head Coach of Wrestling at Lehigh.

A three-time EIWA Coach of the Year, Santoro has mentored two NCAA Champions at Lehigh, the second of which, Darian Cruz won the 125-pound title in 2017. He has led 13 individuals to a total of 16 EIWA titles, while guiding 11 men to 20 total All-American medals.

Darian Cruz’s national title capped a successful campaign for the Mountain Hawks in 2016-17. Lehigh went 10-4 in duals and competed in the NWCA National Duals Championship Series for the second consecu-tive season, avenging a loss to Rutgers a year prior with a 23-10 win. Darian Cruz and Scott Parker won individual EIWA titles at the fi rst two weights and both wrestlers went on to earn All-America honors, with Parker fi nishing eighth at 133 in addition to Cruz’s national title. Lehigh fi nished 12th at the NCAA Cham-pionships. Seven Mountain Hawks qualifi ed for the NCAA Championships with all seven winning at least one match.

Santoro earned his third EIWA Coach of the Year award in 2015-16. He led the Moun-tain Hawks to a 13-3 dual record that included Lehigh’s fi rst win over rival Cornell since 2011. The Mountain Hawks fi nished second at the EIWA Championships with lineup bookends Darian Cruz and Max Wessell winning their fi rst career titles.

Lehigh crowned three All-Americans at the NCAA Championships for the third straight year with Wessell and Randy Cruz earning their fi rst career All-America medals, while Nathaniel Brown became a two-time All-American.

In 2014-15, Santoro earned his 100th victo-ry as Lehigh’s head coach when the Mountain Hawks upset eventual NCAA Champion Ohio State at National Duals.

Lehigh’s lineup featured just two seniors but a strong core of sophomores and juniors

continued to impress. Randy Cruz won his second EIWA title to help lead Lehigh to a sec-ond place conference fi nish. Nathaniel Brown reached the NCAA fi nals at 184 while Mason Beckman and Mitch Minotti earned All-Ameri-ca honors for the second straight year.

Santoro led the 2013-14 Lehigh squad through the ups and downs that come with a young roster. The young Mountain Hawks soared at the NCAA Championships with freshmen Darian Cruz and Minotti joining Beckman in earning All-America honors. Cruz and Minotti were Lehigh’s fi rst freshmen All-Americans since 2003 with Cruz also be-coming Lehigh’s fi rst true freshman All-Amer-ican in 34 years.

In 2012-13, Santoro helped guide a young Mountain Hawk team to ten dual meet wins. Three individuals won individual EIWA titles including Randy Cruz, who became Lehigh’s fi rst true freshman EIWA champion since 1980. Under Santoro’s guidance Robert Hamlin became Lehigh’s 16th three-time All-American and reached the NCAA fi nals for the second time in his career.

Lehigh continued to make strides in 2011-12. The Mountain Hawks fi nished eighth at the NCAA Championships for the second straight year and once again had two fi nalists in Zack Rey and Brandon Hatchett. Lehigh crowned four All-Americans, its most since having fi ve in 2004. Robert Hamlin won his second straight EIWA title, while Hatchett won his fi rst. Shane Welsh was the surprise of the tournament, capturing the title at 149 from the No. 6 seed. Lehigh’s three champion-ships were its most since 2006. For his efforts, Santoro was voted EIWA Coach of the Year for the second time.

In Santoro’s third season Lehigh returned to the top ten at the NCAA Championships for the fi rst time since 2006 with an eighth place fi nish. The Mountain Hawks crowned three All-Americans for the fi rst time in fi ve years and placed two wrestlers in the NCAA fi nals for the fi rst time since 2003. Heavyweight Zack Rey became Santoro’s fi rst national champion and the 27th in Lehigh history.

In 2009-10, Santoro guided the Mountain Hawks to a 16-3-1 dual record and a top-ten national dual meet ranking for most of the sea-son. In March, Santoro guided Rey to an EIWA title and All-America honors with a third place fi nish at the NCAA Championships, the pro-gram’s fi rst All-American in four years.

Santoro produced an immediate turn-around in his fi rst season back in Bethle-hem. The Mountain Hawks’ 23-1 dual mark surpassed the school record for dual wins in a season. Santoro guided Seth Ciasulli and Da-vid Craig to individual EIWA Championships, while the Mountain Hawks qualifi ed seven wrestlers for the NCAA Championships.

Before returning to Lehigh, Santoro spent

the previous fi ve years as the head coach at the University of Maryland where he helped resurrect the Terrapins program, which in 2008 captured its fi rst ACC title in 35 years; a feat which earned Santoro ACC Coach of the Year honors.

Prior to his stint at Maryland Santoro served as an assistant at Lehigh for nine years, including eight seasons on Greg Strobel’s staff. During his initial tenure, Santoro was part of some of the most successful teams in school history. In 2003, Santoro was named the national Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Wrestling Coaches Association, after helping guide Lehigh to its third EIWA title in four years, and a fourth place fi nish at the NCAA Championships.

Before coming to Lehigh, Santoro spent the 1993-94 season as an assistant coach at Duquesne and the two seasons prior to that as a graduate assistant at Penn State.

Santoro has enjoyed success at every level of wrestling, both as a coach and a com-petitor. After wrestling for Bethlehem Catholic High School and taking a post-graduate year at Blair Academy, Santoro wrestled colle-giately at Pittsburgh, where he became the Panthers’ only four-time All-America while capturing national titles in 1988 and 1989 at 142 pounds. A three-time EWL Champion, he was the recipient of Pittsburgh’s Golden Pan-ther Award in 1989, recognizing the outstand-ing athlete of the year.

On the international scene, Santoro was a four time member of the U.S. National Team between 1995 and 1999 and served as an alternate for the 1996 Olympic Team. Santoro earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology from Pittsburgh in 1992. In addition to his Bethlehem roots and previous coaching stint at Lehigh, Santoro’s father, uncle and brother all wrestled for the Brown and White.

Santoro and his wife Julie have a daugh-

ter, Leah and a son, Mack.
