At the end of World War II, the Soviet Union and the U.S. (who had helped each other during the war) agreed to split Korea – north and south – in order to rebuild it

as free.

It was supposed to be

temporary. But the Soviet

Union never gave up control

of the north. The country ended up

divided into North and

South Korea.

Page 5: Korea and the “Cold War”

The Soviet Union put Kim Il Sung in as ruler of N. Korea. He remained the leader until his

death in 1994.

The United Nations sent troops to defend South Korea. The United States led

As part of the cease-fire agreement, North and South Korea were separated by a 2½

mile wide strip of land where no one lives. It is called the DMZ: Demilitarized zone.

Page 15: Korea and the “Cold War”

That cease-fire has never been replaced by a peace treaty,

North Korean soldiers have dug at least 4 tunnels underneath the DMZ. Three

were found in the 1970s.

Page 27: Korea and the “Cold War”

There's now a series of concrete walls blocking the tunnel where it runs under

the DMZ.

Each wall has cameras on both sides so South Korea and North Korea can see if anyone messes with them.

Page 28: Korea and the “Cold War”

Wide enough for tanks, this more than 30,000 troops

per hour could move through this tunnel.  There’s even a “room” for troops to

assemble.

Once in, you are supervised by “handlers” – kind of a combination of tour

It is hard for outsiders to get permission to visit the North.
