KIDNAPPED Page 3

As a year group we have been reading the classic novel “Kidnapped” by Robert Louis Stevenson for the Big Read. The story is about a young man called David Balfour, who has just lost his father. He receives a letter instructing him to receive his inheritance from his uncle in the House Of Shaws. David expects a house of wealth and fine clothing, but instead arrives at a squalid ruin. He is greeted at gunpoint by a surly old man who is his uncle Ebenezer. Ebenezer refuses to let David take a can-dle anywhere and attempts to send him to his death in a giant well. When he fails, Ebenezer tricks David onto a brig after doing a deal with the Captain Hoseason. The deal was to have David imprisoned on the ship and sold as a slave to the Carolinas. The men on the ship are rough and have varied backgrounds. One of the seamen, Mr Shaun, murders the cabin boy, Ransome, simply because Ransome brought him a dirty glass. David is called up to take Ransome’s place in the Round House, and is made to serve the captain meals like porridge. On a foggy night, the brig runs down a small vessel that is carrying Jacobite refugees from the English. Only one man survives, a strong tanned young man with flamboyant clothes, named Alan Breck. David and Alan unite against the seamen who are planning to murder Alan, after taking his gold. There is a siege and David kills two men himself. The rest of them meet the wrath of Alan’s sword. The remaining men could attack at any moment…. What we like about this book is that it is exciting and fast-paced. The emotions are well described and the writer sets the scene well. We have been doing many Kidnapped related activities such as: Kidnapped Booklets – The booklets are filled with questions and puzzles on the chapters of Kidnapped. After we’ve read some we fill in the questions on that chapter. This helps the teacher to see if we understand what we are reading. We have also been writing Kidnapped diary entries to show what we thought about that specific part. Old Letters – We wrote a letter to the minister from David, telling him about David’s life in the House Of Shaws. When we had written them, we tore them slightly and crumpled them. Afterwards we soaked them in tea to give them an antique look. Some of them have been put up on display in the library. Competition – Any pupil in the school could enter and received a sheet of paper with numbers on it. There was a PowerPoint which was shown in the food court and the social area with members of staff and others dressed up in a hat with a kidnapped book over the bottom half of their face. The task was to identify the faces pictured and write down the identity of the “pirate” on the correct number on the sheet. By Alexa Hay and Hannah Metcalfe 1L1

SAMYE LING 2011

Knox News Page 4

n February RMPS pupils had the opportunity to visit the Samye Ling Tibetan Buddhist Temple in Eskdalemuir as part of the Higher course . It is the largest Temple in Western Europe so is an interesting place to visit. We arrived at supper time where we met our guide for our stay, a monk called Lindrup. We then found our dorms for the night before heading for supper which was a delicious spinach soup and bread followed by some chocolate pudding. In the evening we met with Lindrup who gave us as an introduction to Buddhism and we had the opportunity to watch the traditional Chenrezig prayer, which is all about developing the qualities of compassion like the Bodhisattva it is named after. To relax we sat in the Tibetan Tearooms for some games and discussion and even had the opportunity to meet some more monks who were happy to share their wisdom. Not the mention the delicious hot chocolate! The following day we were up early for the 7 am Tara prayers before breakfast. We had a little free time to explore the grounds of Samye Ling so we were able to climb Fairy Hill to see the Tibetan prayer flags and visit the Naga spirits at the river. At 10 am we met with Lindrup who gave us a talk about Buddhism and we had a chance to ask questions. After that we had an opportunity to meditate which was lovely and relaxing. Our tour of the grounds was fascinating as we were shown the stupa, various statues and the cloutie tree where some people tied a rag and made a wish. This left us hungry for lunch which was a delicious vegetarian feast of spicy beanburgers with a selection of side dishes which satisfied even the keenest of meat eaters. After lunch we had free time to visit the shop for a few souvenirs and enjoy a last cup of tea in the tearooms. The pupils thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were a credit to the school. If I had a choice I would love to walk to and from school with my mates but my disability makes this difficult and I have to rely on my Mum & Dad to drop me off and pick me up. Despite numerous signs and warnings and requests from staff at Knox regarding the use of cars within school grounds my journey to school is becoming harder due to inconsiderate and selfish drivers. Every day we see people abusing the disabled parking areas. Have you ever tried to get out of a car and into a wheelchair in a “normal “parking bay? It is impossible—the wider bays are there for a reason. Some people seem to think that the disabled parking bay is a turning circle. It is not, there is plenty of room to turn at the end of the school where there is also additional parking. For those that park in a disabled bay because they are dropping something off or will only be a minute may I point out that in that minute I or other disabled badge holders might arrive and there is no space available. Please please please have some consideration and make my journey to school a little easier and a great deal safer. Mark Jackson 1L2

As part of S2 ACE Thursdays second year pupils have been taking part in Holocaust Education. They have been engaging in a variety of activities that are based around the Holocaust with the aim of educating young people about the Holocaust, how it happened, why it happened and why we shouldn’t let it happen again. The pupils start the course looking at the History of the Nazi Party and Anti-Semitism before World War 2; they answer the question ‘What is the Holocaust’; they look briefly at the story of Anne Frank before looking at ‘The Paper Clip’ project by an American high school. The Holocaust Education Course aims to ask pupils to look at what they can do to stop prejudice. Pupils hear from our Senior pupils who visited Auschwitz and they end the course by hearing a Holocaust survivor’s story. On Holocaust Memorial Day this year pupils helped in the organisation of the event by making sure every pupil in the school received a copy of the HMD booklet, they also planted trees in the courtyard to commemorate those who died. Spring Concert By the time this article goes to print, the annual Spring Concert should have taken place! Highlights this year include music from Carnival of the Animals, Les Miserables, a guitar duet by two S6 pupils and a medley of songs by ‘Queen’. Video clips from the Christmas Concert have proved to be popular with parents and pupils, and are still available to view on the school website. We would like to thank all pupils who have contributed to extra-curricular musical groups this year. This includes our S6 pupils, many of whom have been involved in musical groups for the past six years. We wish you all the best for your exams and your plans for next year.

Exam Success As well as the usual round of SQA examinations, several of our pupils have had success in ABRSM (Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music) and Trinity Guildhall exams. Louise McKay – Grade 5 Accordion (with merit) Ben Nisbet – Grade 5 ‘Cello (with merit) David Edgar – Grade 7 ‘Cello (with merit) National Children’s Orchestra of Scotland Jaimee Pickard (3G3) has been selected, by audition, to represent her country playing clarinet in the National Children’s Orchestra of Scotland. After a few days of intensive rehearsal the orchestra will perform in two prestigious venues – the Usher Hall in Edinburgh and the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. Congratulations to all! E Orr & K Johnston (Music Department)

Congratulations go to former Deputy Head Girl, Ailsa Leslie who has recently graduated from Newcastle University with her Bachelor of Medicine degree.

A new lunchtime club has started at Knox Academy – the yoga club! We meet every Wednesday at 1.30pm in the small gym. There are two teachers (Dr Wilson and Mrs Montgomery), who take the class on alternate weeks. Dr Wilson teaches yoga in the Hatha style and Mrs Montgomery teaches the Ashtanga style of yoga. Yoga is great for increasing flexibility and relieving stress. Ashtanga yoga involves moving from one posture to the next in a dynamic way, which is energising. In Hatha yoga we spend longer in each posture and it is very relaxing. The club is open to all pupils and staff. All you need is some comfortable and warm clothing – we would be delighted to see you there. Dr Wilson and Mrs Montgomery

CARNIVAL OF THE ANIMALS

This term Knox Academy music pupils have taken part in an expressive arts project based around Carnival of the Animals in collaboration with nursery and Primary 1 and 2 pupils from Yester and St Mary’s Primaries. 15 Knox pupils visited the two primary schools to demonstrate their instruments and to preview some of the music. The primary children then spent an hour in the Knox Academy hall listening to the orchestra performing pieces from Carnival of the Animals by the French composer Saint-Saens. The primary children sang songs about animals and displayed the ‘animal’ art work that they had prepared at school. A few of them even got the chance to conduct the orchestra! S1 pupils from Knox also contributed their own art work – animal masks- which they presented as a dance-drama along with the music. K Johnston Music Department

DRAMA NEWS

Knox News Page 8

Sweeney Todd ‘Meat Pie anyone?’ Sweeney Todd came to Knox Academy in February with blood, guts and gore galore! With a cast of over thirty S2 – S6 pupils on stage and a backstage crew of almost 20 we brought the tale of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street to the town of Haddington. Miss Whitfield’s Make-Up Course pupils created wonderful creations for all the cast with a gothic feel. The Greek Chorus of ‘dead victims’ looked scary in their ghost whites and dead looking faces. Todd’s victims all were covered in blood… as were some of the audience on the Wednesday evening! The double cast gave their all every night to sold out audiences and one audience member said ‘All the pupils were fantastic. I actually came along after hearing from a friend who had seen it on the Tuesday evening and thought I would be seeing a 'school show' but your pupils were so professional - all the cast, main and supporting. The Greek Chorus, as your Drama Teacher said, scared me.’ Academy Productions hope everyone who came to see it, enjoyed it! Academy Productions SING! SING! SING! The NC Acting and Theatre Performance (Musical Theatre) pupils entertained a sold out audience to an evening of Musical Theatre. The seven senior pupils sang songs from various musicals including ‘Edges’, ‘Company’, ‘Into the Woods’, ‘The Little Mermaid’ and ‘Chorus Line’. The evening was produced as part of their Acting Through Song Unit and each pupil was accompanied by the musical talents of Miss Brown and Miss Orr. The audience were moved by the ‘professional’ performances; some funny and some sad. Check the school website for further details of the final Musical Theatre presentations in June. KWN – It Gets Better A group of nine Drama pupils from S3 have been involved in the Panasonic Kid Witness News programme where they have worked with practitioners from BBC and Panasonic and trained in Media. Their task was to create a short news documentary that they felt was important to them and a Global Issue. They researched, filmed, produced, edited and created a documentary about teenage suicide amongst the teenage Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual and Transgender community across the Western World. They worked with outside agencies ‘Stonewall Scotland’ and ‘Lothian and Borders Fire Brigade’. They are the only school in Scotland involved in this Global competition and have now been nominated for their documentary. The award day is in May and we wish them all the best. The video can be seen on the school webpage under KWN.

Small Town The Higher Drama pupils went to see Random Accomplice’s ‘Small Town’ at the Traverse Theatre. This contemporary piece of Scottish theatre looked at what happens in three small towns when their water supply gets contaminated. The plays takes us to Girvan, Stewarton and Ardrossan; from men dressed at Rabbie Burns, to people turning into animals to Zombies lurking in a café! By the end of the play the audience had the chance to pick the ending they wanted to see… suffice it to say… the ending wasn’t what we had thought it was going to be but we had a wonderful night full of laughter! Swedish School Visit Knox Academy had a fantastic three day visit from senior students from Täby Enskilda Gymnasium school in Sweden. The pupils met with our own pupils here at Knox Academy and spent two days involved in Theatre and Film workshops. They worked on improvisation skills and short film creations. Our Swedish guests had this to say about their trip: “M2C, Hanna, Marika and Per have had a great week in Edinburgh and Haddington! We experienced five days of Scottish weather, kindness, non-school-uniform-alienation, brave 3rd years, open and kind 5th and 6th years Drama pupils, and the professional, relaxed and humorous welcoming by Mr Duddin and Mr Campbell. We had three main goals with our trip: 1: Integrate and speak a lot of English with students at Knox Academy; to practise English, of course, but also to compare school systems and make contact with students outside Sweden. 2: Get inspired by the city of Edinburgh, by taking a lot of pictures and walking up to Arthur's Seat. 3: We visited Edinburgh College of Arts to inspire our students to study abroad after finishing regular school. Regards to all teachers who let Hanna, Marika and Per follow you in class on Thursday!”

Täby Enskilda Gymnasium, outside Stockholm, Sweden, is similar to an upper secondary school (16-19 years of age). The school has a strong media- and social science profile, and M2C is one of three media programme groups, second year. Curious? You can see a lot of media work, among others M2C's music video winners from 2010, at this link: http://www.tabyenskilda.se/webbtv/mediaplayer.asp From all at Knox Academy: it was a wonderful experience to work with like minded students from another country and I know pupils have kept in contact with their Swed ish friends. ART DEPARTMENT NEWS

The Art Department at Knox Academy has managed to form an outside link with the Peter Potter Gallery in Haddington. Some S2 pupils have been working with an artist, Gemma Coyle, through the gallery to learn how to do animation. They are working towards producing a collaborative animation, along with some individual ones, which will be shown in the Peter Potter Gallery ‘Art and Landscape Schools Exhibition’ from 22 April – 11th June. The animations are based on sculptures made in response to the surrounding landscape, drawing on weaving techniques using straw, grasses, willow, leaves etc…(found materials from surrounding area). Pupils have been learning how to make woven structures and the process of stop frame animation. This has enabled the pupils to use the environment and explore weaving as a contemporary art form. Lost Landscapes The Peter Potter Gallery is delighted to begin 2011 with an exciting new programme called Lost Landscapes, a major exhibition and education project that will run from January 2011 to April 2012. The programme traverses boundaries between art, ecology, archaeology and local history and includes a series of seven inspiring exhibitions, exciting participatory events and a community outreach programme involving local groups and individuals of all ages and abilities. 4th years also have the opportunity to exhibit some of their own artwork during this time, which will be hung in the stairwell. K Hay (Art Department)

Knox Academy pupils had success at the first two-day event of the Scottish trial Bike Championship held at Kinlochleven. Congratulations to them all!

All young people across East Lothian had the chance to vote for their Scottish Youth Parliament Representatives in March. The Scottish Youth Parliament is a forum for young people to discuss issues which affect them and try to propose new and sometimes radical solutions to these problems. East Lothian has elected 3 Representatives, one of whom is a Knox Academy Pupil! The successful candidates are; Lachlan Bruce (Ross High School) Sam Elliot (Musselburgh Grammar) Chloe Riva (Knox Academy) Well done to all of the candidates for the campaigns and we wish Chloe good luck in her new role. For more information about SYP you can visit their website http://www.syp.org.uk/ . K Bulloch (Modern Studies Department)

FRIDAY NIGHT IN HADDINGTON

I had the pleasure of accompanying our Community Police Officers Lynn Black and Deborah Gray for part of a “Cover Shift” on Friday 1st April. The officers do a shift like this, on average once every 5 weeks and they work from 5pm on the Friday to 2 or 3am on Saturday. I joined them at 6pm:

6pm Arrive at the station. Have a cup of tea. Discuss some community issues e.g. Queuing at Tesco and behaviour at the Jericho Café.

6.30pm Fuel up the Police Van and start patrolling.

7pm Speak to pupils and parents that we see out and about.

8pm Speak to local shopkeepers regarding behaviour of pupils in their establishments

8.30pm Head out to Gifford

9pm Back to the station for a debrief and action points for Monday.

9.30pm Head home to Edinburgh (and sleep!)

I would like to extend my thanks to all those at the station on Friday night for being so welcoming and answering all my questions.

KNOX ACADEMY TRAMPOLINE CLUB

Knox News Page 14

On Friday 1st April 40 S1 pupils had a spring in their step as they tried their hand at Trampolining. 3 Coaches from City Of Edinburgh Trampoline Club, led by Miss Jeffrey (Knox Geography/Science Depts), donated their time and expertise to introduce the basics of trampolining to the group of pupils. Many of them had never tried trampolining before so a hint of nervous excitement was in the air. Lots of pupils managed to master tuck, straddle and pike jumps, half twists and full twists, seat drops and some even tried to link their new skills into a small routine. Knox Academy has 3 trampolines with a fourth about to be repaired this term by funding provided by the Knox Academy Support Group (KASG). Knox Academy is one of only 3 high schools in East Lothian to have trampolines (Musselburgh has 2, Preston Lodge has 1), it is the Hub of trampolining in East Lothian with successful Active Schools Primary and Secondary “Jumpstarters” trampolining sessions being established for nearly 2 years and Knox PE department integrating trampolining into their Core and Certificate class programmes. Active Schools East Lothian are hosting a display at Knox Academy in April to showcase the budding trampolininsts of the Haddington cluster, this event will mark the end of the spring term blocks. Information on re-booking for the Summer Block is available from Suzanne Laing (Primary Co-ordinator) and Andy Lambert (Secondary Co-ordinator). Pupils from Knox Academy and the surrounding primary Clusters will be taking part in the Annual CETC Schools Trampoline Championships which will be held in Midlothian on 10th April and we wish them luck at this event and hope to see lots of medals and trophies return to Haddington. L Jeffrey (Geography Department)

ABSENCES

Could parents and carers please ensure that they follow up absences and absence telephone calls with a written note—either on paper or via email. We continue to send out absence letters and print-outs in reports but there are still some absences that remain unaccounted for. When you receive a print-out all you need to do is amend it on the sheet and make sure that your child returns it to the School Office. As with any organisation that looks after 820 pupils we do make mistakes and if we have, I do apologise. Equally never assume that the letter that you have sent in with your youngster makes it out of their school bag—so please check every now and then...you might be surprised by what you find!
