World Earth Day celebration starts with Earth Week on April 16 ending with World Earth Day celebration on April 22, 2011. It

marks the 41st anniversary of the first U.S. Earth Day celebration held in April 1970 and attended by twenty million individuals. They were the driving force behind the environmental movement that led to the establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency. Forty-one years later, a billion people in 180 Nations celebrate World Earth Day every year.

On World Earth Day 2011 we can pledge to re-dedicate ourselves to make small, but serious changes in our every-day living that will conserve, protect and sustain our planet. Our resolve to be “Green” with our pledge of “Going Green” today and every day will have a positive impact on stopping the environmental degradation of our lands, oceans, rivers, lakes and air.

Some suggestions for taking an environmental action by “Going Green” are:

Bring your own cloth or mesh bag when you shop. Why? By estimate, we use 88 billion plastic bags every year that take 12 million barrels of oil to produce and that remain in our environment for 1,000 years before they decompose.

Shop Locally. Why? The typical meal travels 22,000 miles to get to your plate. Locally grown food and other products don’t require transportation, and that reduces carbon emissions - a fancy term for pollution. Buying local also keeps money in the community and provides the freshest food possible.

Use low-flow showerheads. Why? Older showerheads spray 4 to 6 gallons of water per minute. Buy and use showerheads spraying 2.4 gallons per minute or less. After one year of 5-minute showers, a family of four will save up to 20,000 gallons of water, plus the energy needed to run the hot water heater, and greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by more than 300 pounds per year.

Wash your clothes in cold water. Why? Hot water uses more energy. Unless you are washing heavily soiled clothes, or diapers, most clothes do not need warm water to get clean. The average household can save $61 and 1,281 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions per year by washing in cold water.

Let your grass grow. Why? Spending less time tending to your lawn actually makes it greener. Most grass species fare best when they are kept at least 2 ½ inches tall. The length creates more surface area to absorb sunlight which creates thicker turf, deeper roots and you don’t have to water as often. Money can also be saved by letting grass clippings remain on your lawn; it adds nitrogen, discourages weed seeds from germinating and requires less fertilizer and herbicide application. Also, leaving clippings on lawns means less in landfills, where often more than 12 million tons of yard waste deposits reduce the life expectancy of the landfill.

Dispose of your old cell phones and recycle your cathode-ray TV Tube.Estimate has it that in the average American household, three cell phones are stashed in a drawer. Unused cell phones could possibly be sold to www.greenphones.com where they will be refurbished and resold. Also, if one million people recycled one cathode-ray tube TV this year, four million pounds of lead can be kept out of the ground

More “Go Green” tips can be found in “The Live Earth Global Warming Survival Handbook: 77 Essential Skills To Stop Climate Change” by David de Rothschild.

In January 2011, Fort Knox Family and MWR kicked off the Blue Star Card Program for deployed spouses. It was a wonderful time for spouses to enjoy bowling, food, and entertainment with a circle of women and men that are all dealing with the trials and tribulations of having a deployed spouse. Fort Knox Family and MWR takes great pride in supporting these men and women as they too serve our country while their spouses fight for our freedom. There are continuous monthly events scheduled throughout the year in order to allow these spouses the opportunity to pass the time with a great support social network. Harshaw Trane and Nolin RECC also understand the value of having this program and have offered their support.

Harshaw Trane, creates and sustains high performing, efficient and secure facility environments. An intelligent building technology and energy services provider, the company employs 300 highly-trained associates. Harshaw Trane serves Kentucky and Southern Indiana with offices in Louisville, Lexington, Fort Knox, Bowling Green, Kentucky and Evansville, Indiana. Created in 1989, the mission of the Harshaw Trane Foundation is to support education, children and family issues, and the arts in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. Trane also provided support to our Soldiers and Families in other programs such as the Army Strong Festival, Barr Library Summer Reading Program and the Grand Opening of the Youth Sports Complex.

Michelle Sharp, program manager for the Blue Star Card Program, sums it up best when she said, “We greatly appreciate the support from Harshaw Trane, (because of them) we are able to go above and beyond in programming for our spouses, giving them special incentives and programs that will help ease this deployment.”

Nolin RECC, our local Energy Cooperative is finding ways to help as well through Blue Star Card by providing funds to allow for FREE child care for each Blue Star Card event for this year. Spouses who have only been here for a short time rarely have the opportunity or connections to procure child care for such events. Unfortunately, this means many spouses are unable to attend such activities and dealing with deployment becomes even more difficult. However, offering this FREE child care service at the Family and MWR Child Development Center, makes parents feel comfortable leaving their children in good hands. Nolin’ s mission is to improve the quality of living in the Fort Knox Community by providing reliable, cost-effective services and products valued by our members and customers.

“This child care service that Nolin is providing is one that many are taking advantage of. We are so glad that Family and MWR along with Nolin can give these spouses a few hours of social networking support time,” said Sharp.

Fort Knox stands by its motto, “Strength Starts Here.” It does start here, it starts with the women and men left behind to handle all of the family and financial affairs, care for the children, and address all those things that go wrong with the house or car. These spouses become plumbers, and carpenters, while functioning as both father and mother for 18 months at a time. Fort Knox Family and MWR, Harshaw Trane, and Nolin recognize the commitment and increasing sacrifices that our Families make every day. The strength of our Soldiers - comes from the strength of their Families.

For more information on getting involved with the Blue Star Card Program, contact Michelle Sharp at (502) 624-1838.
