Accident Avoidance ranks high on European legislative agenda

Commerical Vehicle Accidents are still an unpleasant Reality

Accidents caused by commercial vehicles create extremely high traffic disruption and impact negatively the industrial process

1~2% of the GDP in annual economical loss through traffic accidents

Negative image on truck transportation system (example Europe)

Unfortunately with increasing traffic the risk to haveA higher rate of accidents increases dramatically.

Especially truck accidents are causing a lot of Damage and disruption to the traffc flow, sheding a Negative image on the whole industry.

This has lead industry and governments to workTogether in developing the ECE standards, to Improve traffic safety

Motivation: Typical Accident Situations

Overestimating curve speed limit (e.g. narrowing curves, highway exits, city passages)Obstacle avoidance maneuvers with sudden steering input (e.g. steering from the shoulder back on the road and skidding)Laden semi-trailer combination in narrow curves on slippery surface (jackknifing on turns)etc.

Installed in (semi-)trailer

Stabilizes concerning roll-over

Brakes only trailer=> limited PerformanceIndependent from truck equipment (even ABS only trucks possible)

Retrofit possible by exchanging brake system components

Installed in tractorStabilizes a vehicle combination concerning roll-over and sliding/jack-knifeBrakes both, truck and trailer => maximum possible performanceIndependent from trailer equipment (conventional, EBS- and EBS+RSP trailer possible)No retrofit (OEM installed system)

Objectives:Avoid vehicle or vehicle combination roll-over within physical limits. No disturbances during normal driving maneuvers.

Realization in ESP:Limit lateral acceleration to a non critical value by engine torque reduction and brakingDetect lift-off of curve-inside wheels and reduce vehicle speed by strong braking

Electronic Stability Systems for Commercial Vehicles

Objectives:Avoid vehicle or vehicle combination roll-over within physical limits. No disturbances during normal driving maneuvers.

Realization in ESP:Limit lateral acceleration to a non critical value by engine torque reduction and brakingDetect lift-off of curve-inside wheels and reduce vehicle speed by strong braking

Summary

ESP is a safety system to assist the driver in critical situations with engine and brake interventions.ESP includes functions

to stabilize a vehicle combination (e.g. prevent jack-knife), andto prevent roll over

within the limits of physics.A GDV-Study showed that ESP could prevent >40% of all heavy CV driver accidents.

Driver Assistance Systems for CVs – Motivation

More than 20% of CV accidents are rear end collisionsOften passenger cars are concernedConsequences of this accident type are usually very sad as collision energy of heavy CV is extremely high, comparison:

– 40t @ 90 kph = 87.6 MJ– 1.5t @ 120 kph = 5.8 MJ

=> 15x higher collision energy (at typical highway-speeds)

How Long Will The Society Accept These Accidents?

KB Strategy for the future: Driver Assistance Systems integrated with the brake system

Sensing distance to the preceedingvehiclesAutomatic speed and distance controlDriver warning by brake interventionAutomatic emergency brake to reducethe accident impactLongterm: Steering intervention to support the driver

• Starting this year, we equip production vehicles in NA with radar sensors, allowing to control the distance to the preceeding vehicle and also to predict a collision, giving the driver a warning.

•In the near future, we will also fire an emergeny brake in case a collision isunavoidable and recognized because the driver doesn‘t react.

•With such systems and Lane departure warning and ESP, we believe we canprevent 40% of all severe heavy duty accidents.
