Three’s a Charm—Our Student Services Office Shines

In the past year, our student services staff has distinguished itself with university level recognition. Terry Exum, Director of Regional Campuses Student Services was the recipient of the annual Faculty and Staff Diversity Award for the entire university. She was recognized

for developing collaborations to enhance and expand regional campuses student, faculty and staff access to Diversity training and event broadcasts. Due to her efforts, all the regional campuses have access to the broadcasts of the Diversity and International breakfasts, Diversitea, and several other training events. Regional Campuses Student Services Staff members Darlyne Egan and Jim Smith were also recently recognized for the dedication and operational excellence they demonstrate in service to UCF students, faculty members, and Staff members. Ms. Egan was awarded the annual Student Development and Enrollment Services (SDS) OPS Operational Excellence Award at the annual SDES Breakfast. Mr. Smith was nominated for the

annual Gabor Excellence Award. This annual award recognizes the outstanding job performance of a selected UCF Administrative and Professional (A&P) em-ployee. He was recognized at the annual UCF Awards program and joined by his wife, Terry Exum, and Denise Young for the event. Mr. Smith was one of approx-imately 16 nominees.

Students were excited to participate in the nomination process in support of Ms. Egan and Mr. Smith. SGA Student Staff Member Britney Rogers wrote the following state-ment for Ms. Egan’s nomination package: “Darlyne Egan is helpful, kind, and wise, and is a role model to students like me. I always feel comfortable visiting her office for help, answers or a simple chat. She emits such a positive yet peaceful aura that she reminds me of my favorite thing in the world--a cup of tea. Every day, especially the hard ones, it is essential to pause and enjoy someone like Darlyne as if one would pause for a de-lightful cup of tea.” Regional Campuses Volunteer UCF Coordinator and past Veteran Student Assistant Rebecca Shillings wrote the following statement for Mr. Smith’s Nomination package: “Jim is the reason I love UCF. His enthusiasm is contagious. His love of UCF made me become more active on campus. His encouragement has helped me throughout my UCF experi-ence.” Dr. A.J. Range wrote the following words of congratulations to Terry: We are beaming with pride in both Divisions, for your service, achievement, and honor!! Your work speaks for itself!! Over the years that you have been at UCF, you have made notable contributions in the area of Diversity and In-clusiveness and in other areas. Since I joined UCF on July 30, no two of my days have been alike. My first month has included visiting student services areas and talking with students, attending the College of Medicine's White Coat Ceremony, meeting with deans and other administrators in their offices, cheering for the Knights at the Countdown to Kickoff luncheon, meeting some of UCF's finest researchers, attending a new faculty orientation, and addressing a Faculty Senate meeting. One thing I learned quickly — it is apparent that our faculty and staff members are dedicated to their students, their work, and UCF. I have very much enjoyed talking with students who are excited about their activities at UCF and who care passionately about their university. I think we all notice the excitement and enthusiasm that envelop campus when students return for the fall semester. Before coming to UCF, I read the five goals that President Hitt established for the university. It is clear to me that these are exactly the right ones for us, and I am eager to learn more about the many programs and partnerships that support these goals. UCF is an outstanding university, and I am proud to be here and to work with President Hitt in continuing to "reach for the stars." Since I arrived, many of you have asked me about the budget. While details are still unknown, the 2010-11 fiscal year will likely be another challenging one for UCF and for all state agencies. I will use the Provost's Update e-mails to share with you budget-related news and other information as it becomes available throughout the year. Final Notes on UCF Cocoa’s Information Fluency Grant: Integrating Writing and Research: A Collaborative Project to Promote Information Fluency on a Regional Campus

The UCF Cocoa team of Lauren Miller, Denise Young, Barbara Rau Kyle, Andy Todd, Barbara Alderman, Charlotte Neubauer, Jim Katt, Charlie Viggiano, Maria Lavooy, Bob Boettcher , Jerry Sublette, Krisann Draves, Jackie Lamanna, Erin Murdoch, and Steve Heglund have completed their 3-year project to improve psychology, communication, business, and nursing students' research and writing abilities. While budget constraints impacted the project in a number of areas, resulting in no statistical differences between the control experimental groups, the team found several positive outcomes and directions for the future that could impact information fluency among students. Students in the experimental group had positive perceptions about the interventions, and they revised their research papers more often. Their voluntary use of the Writing Center increased, and writing consultants perceived that these

students were better prepared when they visited the center. The project also stimulated Writing Center development and collaboration between the center and the library. The team expects that the resulting enhancements will help build a culture of student information fluency across academic disciplines in the future. Barbara Kyle shared the results and benefits of the study at the European Writing Center Association Conference in Paris in May; Barbara Alderman, Andy Todd, and Barbara Kyle will bring a similar presentation to the October 2010 Georgia Conference on Information Literacy.

The Information Fluency grant brought $43,000 to the Southern Region to develop this project.

Intersil Aids UCF

On June 1, 2010, the University of Central Florida and Intersil Corporation held a joint ceremony to celebrate Intersil’s donation of their $13 million semiconductor fabrication facility in Palm Bay over to the university. The 100,494 square foot building consists of office space, manufacturing and cleanroom facilities all on a 5 acre lot. As part of the donation, Intersil Corporation will be paying for the first year of operating expenses and repairs. They will also provide utility services for 3 years.

While the facility was originally used for the fabrication of wireless and telecommunications equipment, UCF has plans to use the building for training and research in the areas of sustainable energy,

education and business development. Some redesign is necessary to meet university needs for classroom and laboratory space but the building is expected to be in use by UCF for the Spring 2011 term.

The June ceremony allowed Intersil CEO, Dave Bell, and University of Central Florida President, John Hitt, to elaborate how the collaborative efforts of corporation and university can benefit the Space Coast area and keep the United States competitive in technology. The presentation concluded with the official handing over of the ceremonial key to the building. Following this, tours were given to all guests in attendance. The UCF Southern Region Associate Vice President, Dr. Denise Young, took part in the tour. "This is a very positive initiative and it will have a strong impact on Brevard's economy. We don't know the specific impact the Intersil facility will have on UCF's campuses in Brevard County yet, but the positive effect we have already observed of increased visibility of UCF's commitment and growing presence in Brevard County. As the plans for the facility develop, we will work to address any related educational needs that fit into our mission," says Dr. Young.

A special thank you goes to Intersil employee (then Treasurer), John Lisi, who approached UCF 2 years ago about donating the building when the company streamlined their operations. Lisi is an alumnus of UCF.

Faculty & Staff Achievements Dr. Donna Malvey had a paper titled “Unionization in Healthcare: Background and Trends,” published in the May/June 2010 edition of the Journal of Healthcare Management (55:3, 154-157). Two more of her papers have been accepted for presentation this fall at annual meetings. The first paper, “Retail Medicine and the EHR” has been accepted for the 2010 American Health Information Management Convention & Exhibit to be held in Orlando, FL September 25 - 30, 2010. The second paper, “Human Resources Implications of Low-Cost Disruptive Innovation in Healthcare: The case of Retail Clinics” has been accepted for presentation at the 2010 Southern Management Association Meeting in October. Florin Mihai published the book Assessing English Language Learners in the Content Areas: A Research-into-Practice Guide for Educators with the University of Michigan Press. The book seeks to provide guidance to classroom teachers, staff developers, and test-item designers who want to improve ELL assessment out-comes, particularly in the areas of math, science and social stud-ies.

Jim Smith, Coordinator Regional Campuses Student Services was nominated for the Gabor Excellence Award. This annual award recognizes the outstanding job performance of a selected UCF Administrative and Professional (A&P) employee. The Gabor Excellence Award recipient will be announced on August 17, 2010, at the Annual UCF Human Resources Employee Awards Program. On August 9 and 11, 2010, the Cocoa campus hosted the 4 train-ing modules required for the Diversity Certifi-cate. The sessions were presented by Barbara Thompson. The staff members who partici-pated and received their certificates are Michelle Aybar-Tapia, Elaine Cruz, Darlyne Egan, Ashely Harper, Todd Jennings, Darlene Kraft, Felipe Mendez, Dan Miller, Sue Sorensen, Doug Watkins, Dr. Denise Young, and Teresa Youngman. Two students also earned their certificates: Bill Wil-mot, and Alice Weaver. Staff members Shakira Guice, Megan Haught, and Diana Soltys were able to attend several sessions and will complete their training at a later date.

Community Involvement Sonya Curtis and Dr. Denise Young are working with the Florida Puerto Rican/Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Inc. (FPRHCC) to obtain a Statewide Conference Planning Grant to help bring more recognition to the Juan Ponce de Leon Landing site. Ponce de Leon, on charter from Spain’s King Ferdinand, landed in what is now Melbourne Beach in April of 1513. He went on to become Florida’s first Governor and Chief Justice. Took part in the Economic Development forum of the

Melbourne Area Association of Realtors on June 15, 2010. This forum provided the opportunity to receive an update from the Honorable Andy Anderson, Brevard County Commissioner District V, regarding his economic development efforts in our community and to participate in an open dialogue discussion on issues important to us.

On June 18th, attended a breakfast hosted by

President John Hitt for the Economic Impact of Central Florida’s Modeling, Simulation, and Training Industry. Central Florida enjoys the enviable position of being the nation’s epicenter for modeling, simulation and training. The region hosts more than 100 companies, provides nearly 17,000 industry-related jobs that earn average annual salaries over $70,000, and boasts a gross regional product of nearly $3 billion-a significant contributor to the industry’s total state impact of $5 billion. This unique alliance among the military, academe, and industry is a strategic asset and a critical part of our community’s economic diversification efforts.

The 2nd Annual SPC 3513 Debate Tournament On August 4, four teams from fictitious colleges competed in the 2nd Annual SPC 3513 Debate Tournament on the UCF Palm Bay campus. The resolution was the same one that the students had studied and debated all summer: "Resolved: That the U.S. Should Sign an International Agreement to Cap Greenhouse Gases." These debaters were completing their final assignment in Jerry Sublette's summer Argumentation & Debate class. But they were also competing for trophies and bragging rights. This year, three 4-person teams and one 5-person team competed in this event. Teams flipped a coin to determine sides. Each team then had two 5-minute constructive speeches and three 3-minute rebuttals in which to present and defend its case. Two simultaneous semi-finals were held and then the two winning teams met for the championship round, again with a coin flip determining sides. There were 5 judges for each of the semi’s and 11 judges for the final round. In the finals, the team of Paula Schroeder (I/O Comm), Willow Sablick (Bus Ad), Cindy Williams (Liberal Studies), and Melissa Pressley (I/O Comm) won a hard-fought 8 - 3 decision over the team of April Cox (Bus

Ad), Mark Graveline (I/O Comm), Casey Crook (I/O Comm), and Sharon Irons (Poli Sci). The “Top Speaker” trophy was awarded to Melissa Pressley. The goal of SPC 3513, as taught by Mr. Sublette, is for students to learn how to build and defend a case in the context of the policy debate model. Students are immersed in a microcosm of the actual debate world as practiced in high schools and colleges in the U.S. This debate tournament is the culmination of that simulation. This year’s judges included Dr. Denise Young (Assoc. VP of Regional Campuses), Dr. Mike Johnson (Education), Dr. Erin Murdoch (Psychology), Mr. Jim Smith (Coordinator, SR Student Services), Mr. John King (Advising) Ms. Shakira Guice (Advising), Ms. Sonya Curtis (Assistant Director, Palm Bay Campus), Ms. Barbara Alderman (Librarian), Mr. Brandon Bestwick (Business Ad major and former SPC 3513 student), Ms. Katie Sprayberry (Business Ad major and former 3513 student), Ms. Sara Maiorano (UCF graduate and Speech Pathologist for Brevard schools), and Anne Trelstad (UCF I/O Comm graduate and graduate student in Communication). The Nicholson School of Communication provided the trophies and refreshments for the tournament.

UCF/NASA Aerospace Institute Dr. Mary Kalen Romjue, along with NASA/ERC Program Director Laura Baker, and Lynn Clifton from the Brevard Schools Foundation, convened the 12th Annual UCF/NASA Aerospace Institute for the U.S. Department of State's Division of Overseas Schools (DOS) on Monday, June 14, at the La Cita Country Club in Titusville. All participants reside at La Cita during the Institute. Eighteen teachers from the International Schools that are affiliated with the DOS along with five Host Teachers assembled for the opening banquet. The DOS Teachers came from schools located in Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Morocco, Laos, Turkey, Uganda, Macedonia, Bolivia, Nicaragua, the Ivory Coast and Nigeria. Host teachers included Samantha McGill, Carrie Gerace, Nadine Council, Kim McClay, and Chad Pinnick. Samantha, Carrie and Nadine are all former UCF Cocoa graduates. The Institute, which was held from June 14 through June 24, participants experienced NASA instructional workshops at the KSC-Educator’s Resource Center (ERC). While at KSC they enjoyed tours of the facilities such as the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), the Orbiter Processing Facility (OPF), the International Space Station Processing Facility (ISSPF), the Saturn V Museum, and many other sites at KSC. In addition to the KSC experiences, the group enjoyed workshops at the Florida Solar Energy Center, the BCC Planetarium, the Astronaut Hall of Fame, a behind the scenes tour of EPCOT and many local attractions. Many of the daily instructional sessions in the workshop were taught by UCF Doctoral and recent Graduate students at NASA ERC. Dr. Michael Hynes and Dr. Mary Kalen Romjue are Co-PI's of the NEET Grant that manages the NASA ERC at Kennedy Space Center. I-StEP Kick-Off for College of Education On July 29th, the College of Education kicked off I-StEP, a pilot program in partnership with Brevard County Schools. I-StEP, Internship Start Early Program, was developed during the past year through leadership of Dr. Karri Williams and Mrs. Nancy Brasel

with support of Dr. Denise Young and Ms. Sheryl Schagen. Those four met with Brevard school district personnel in October 2009 to begin discussion of I-StEP. In March, 20 UCF interns were selected to be paired with teacher-mentors in six Brevard high-needs schools. On July 29th, the interns met their mentors at an orientation meeting and luncheon at the Brevard Educational Services Facility in Viera. The interns will be in the schools for the three weeks at the beginning of the school year in addition to their regular internship weeks. Interns who are successful in both I-StEP and their internships will receive contract binders from the school district. The I-StEP program offers UCF education interns the opportunity to work with the Brevard County mentor-teachers to observe and help set up classrooms during planning week and then to observe and support teachers during the first two weeks of the school year. These are crucial weeks in terms of developing relationships with children and parents, creating positive classroom atmosphere, and establishing classroom routines and procedures. The experience will enrich our interns as they prepare for their internships and for their future classrooms. They will also receive a hiring preference at targeted schools in Brevard County. Science Teacher Awards On August 5, 2010, Dr. Mary Kalen Romjue, Dr. Denise Young, and Sheryl Schagen attended the Space Coast Educational Alliance Exemplary Science Teacher Awards. At this ceremony, one of Dr. Romjue’s former students, Kaycee Cook, who now teaches at Palm Bay Elementary, was honored. Ms. Cook, even after graduation has been involved with assisting Dr. Romjue in such projects as being a host teacher for UCF/NASA Aerospace Institute. Congratulations to Ms. Cook. In addition, UCF Cocoa and Palm Bay Campuses were recognized for being a Silver level supporter of the awards.

Four Nursing students successfully defended their honors in the major theses on July 20th. Cocoa SNA president, Kelly Sullivan’s thesis was titled, “Improving Nursing Care of Women Who Suffer Miscarriage.” Jennifer Watts, vice president of the Cocoa SNA, defended “A Comparative Analysis of the Effect of Critical Care Nursing Interventions on Acute Outcomes in Patients with Traumatic Brain Injury.” Giselle Hively’s thesis was titled, “Nurses Helping Returning Military Personnel with PTSD” and Jessie Cameron’s thesis studied, “Family Presence during Resuscitation of Adult Patients.” Cocoa SNA Officers, Mindy Klaproth and Amanda Cobb, are the creators and webmasters for the new Cocoa Student Nursing Association website. The site includes information the association’s community service activities, spotlights student achievements, and tips and links for graduating seniors. Nursing professor, Krisann Draves, arranged for ten students from the Cocoa SNA joined with the United Way as part of the student’s Public Health and Community clinical to assist with a pilot program called Partners in Parenting. The Partners in Parenting program provides for home visits for families with newborns to increase education about newborn care and nutrition, developmental milestones, choosing caregivers, and Shaken Baby Syndrome. Nina Caputo, Kelly Sullivan, Cory Davenport, Danielle Simmons, Jennifer Watts, Amanda Cobb, Lindsey Kimmerling, Natalie Karycki, Pamela Lavallee and Rachel Simms were involved with the home visits. Joint Use Library The library has several ways to help when you are considering our resources for use in your classes. Andy Todd and Barbara Alderman are UCF Librarians for the Southern Region. You can schedule face-to-face library instruction sessions tailored to your needs by calling either Andy or Barbara. We will base the instruction on the classroom assignments and your guidance. Students will have hands-on practice on how to use the library catalog and databases in the library's classroom with an emphasis on access from off campus. We can build a customized, online Research Guide for your class with links to databases and online resources, along with instructions for using the library and getting help. An example can be seen here: http://libguides.lib.ucf.edu/content.php?pid=44526 You can use our online tutorials and modules for students to learn about the library and about information literacy concepts, like how to avoid plagiarism or how to create a search strategy in a database. We have 12 Information Literacy Modules. The Information Literacy Modules require students to login with their NID and NID password. The modules have an assessment component that is scored. We are happy to help and answer questions about assigning the Information Literacy Modules. There is also an FAQ page that is very helpful for both faculty and your students http://infolit.ucf.edu/faculty/faq/ A small thing, but perhaps one that could be extremely helpful to students, is to add all of the ways a student can get help from the library to your course information. We have the Ask a Librarian service, librarians at the Reference Desk, and we offer Research Consultations to students who need

more help than can be provided at the desk. Direct Connect continues to grow throughout the Summer!! We were able to register over 400 students through our online system with the assistance of our Brevard Community College partners. This Fall term Direct Connect to UCF will start an initiative geared at allowing students to access important information about their major through our FACEBOOK page. Starting this Fall student will be able to click on their intended major at the UCF COCOA/ Palm Bay FACEBOOK page and watch a PowerPoint tutorials with information related to their intended major. Direct Connect to UCF and the UCF Regional Campuses Student Ambassador Program would like to welcome Patricia Dyson to the team. Enrollment Services Kristina Watkins, Sonya Curtis and Shakira Guice hosted a Decision Day event at each of the 4 BCC campuses in June. On the spot admission decisions were made for 82 students. 28 students attended Decision Day in Cocoa, 24 participated in Melbourne, 21 applied in Palm Bay, and 9 talked with enrollment staff in Titusville. In June, Kristina Watkins met with 39 students at Cocoa High School that were attending an SAT camp to discuss Direct Connect, UCF regional campuses and financial aid. The students asked intelligent questions about a number of areas showed interest in UCF and its regional campuses.

The UCF Cocoa/Palm Bay Facebook page will be highlighting information on the majors offered at the Cocoa and Palm Bay campuses. The next major in the spotlight is Sociology. If you want to advertise spring classes, events, or just interesting facts about the major or careers, please send the information to the UCF Cocoa/Palm Bay page creator and manager, Ashley Harper at akharper@mail.ucf.edu.

The Southern Region Welcomes Sonya Curtis to Palm Bay

Sonya Curtis is the new Assistant Director of Academic Support Services for UCF's Palm Bay cam-pus. She recently relocated to Florida from New Jersey. She completed her B.S. degree in Speech Pathology with a minor in Deaf Studies and her M.A. in Audiology from The College of New Jersey. Sonya comes to UCF with experience from the areas of education and social services and she has as-sisted individuals, youth, and families from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Most recently, Sonya advised students enrolled in the Educational Opportunity Fund Program (a state funded TRIO program) at The College of New Jersey. She also coordinated programming and provided ser-vices for School Based Youth Services Programs at high schools in Burlington and Trenton. Sonya is excited to join UCF and says, "I am very happy to be here. UCF's commitment to partnering with community colleges is impressive and I'm looking forward to working with everyone to help students and the university achieve their goals."

Information on the BAS degree BAS majors are also restricted to a regional campus or online, they cannot take a course that has Orlando/main campus as its location. Also, to be eligible for this major, a student must have an AS degree from a Florida public community or a Florida state college. The degree must have been awarded fall 2000 or later. There is paperwork involved in verifying this, so the student needs to see us early on if they are thinking about pursuing this major. Information on the BABA degree The Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration (B.A.B.A.), is the only business major offered through UCF that can be completed fully in Brevard. It is a regional campus program only, so students who pursue this major can only take classes at a regional campus location. The BA in Business Administration is comprised of 5 parts, General education, prerequisites, common body of knowledge/core, minor and college level foreign language. All prerequisites must be completed with a 'C' or higher before a student will be allowed to take any upper level business /common body of knowledge courses. Students who plan to pursue the B.A.B.A. , and have not completed all of their prerequisites before starting at UCF generally choose to take their prerequisite courses as a transient student at BCC while working on courses for their minor at UCF. Education Fair Angie Jones visited DRS Tactical on Hibiscus in Melbourne and represented the UCF Cocoa Advising office in their annual Education Fair held on Thursday, July 22 from 1-3 p.m., Angie set-up an informational table and shared vital educational opportunities with their staff.

Graduate Fair On Monday, September 14, 2010, UCF will be holding their annual Graduate Fair in Orlando in the Pegasus Ballroom of the Student Union. Representatives from the university’s various colleges and programs will be on hand to answer questions about admissions and degree options. Welcome We would like to introduce and welcome Ms. Lenae Walton to the UCF Cocoa Advising office. She was chosen to represent our office as a Peer Advisor. Her duties include: Helping students who are not familiar with searching the schedule and guide students through electronic transient forms, help students complete forms, participate in recruiting events, send out global emails, and make follow-up calls. She is also in the process of establishing a new club on the Cocoa campus: "The Single Parents Club". She is very enthusiastic and eager to contribute to our advising team. We are so glad to have her.

Veteran Orientations Assist Newest Knights As we move into the “Dog Days of Summer” more Veteran students are taking advantage of the on-campus Veteran Orientations being offered by the Regional Campuses Student Services Office at both the UCF Cocoa and UCF Palm Bay campuses. Beginning in June 2009, Regional Campuses Student Services has offered Veteran Orientation in conjunction with On-Campus Orientation sessions in Cocoa and Palm Bay. Extra sessions have been scheduled periodically between on-campus orientations to expedite the paperwork for veterans. Coordinator Jim Smith conducts the Veteran Orientation sessions that include an overview of the UCF Veteran Services website, Forms overview, Step-by-step Form completion and submission to Veteran Services in Orlando through the UCF courier. Since the inception, over 30 veterans have taken advantage of this interactive program. Pizza for Peace Film Series The Pizza for Peace Film Series continued from spring to summer with movies and discussion co-facilitated by Patty Farris, Dispute Resolution Services and Barbara Thompson from the Office of Diversity Initiatives. May 26th marked the presentation of “Body Image & the Race for Perfection” and July 29 marked the presentation of People Like Us: Social Class in America. Don’t forget to watch for and sign up for the fall Pizza for Peace options coming soon to a regional campus near you. Good Changes: What is Happening With SGA Throughout each semester, students at the Cocoa Regional Campus come to Knightro’s Coffee Lounge to enjoy what SGA has to offer. Our spacious lounge provides a comfortable setting in which the students can watch TV, play games such as ping pong, grab a cup of coffee or hot chocolate and get a free scantron for an upcoming exam. We also sell discounted theme park tickets and advocate providence of free Cocoa YMCA memberships to all UCF students. The Student Government Association of Orlando constantly strives

to extend valuable services to the UCF regional campuses in order to promote school spirit and a successful student body. The latest news regarding the Cocoa Campus is that we have succeeded in getting free printing to students here just like at the main campus. During the two week period that our office shall be closed from August 6th to August 22th, SGA Vice President, Taylor Lochrane and SGA Executive Assistant from Palm Bay Campus, Laura Raymond, will be renovating the Cocoa Campus office. On top of getting a couple computers and printers installed for students to print for free (which is not free in the computer lab), we will put in new cabinets, black and gold carpeting, and we will add a paint job which shall provide a festive quality to the lounge and office. We are proud to report this because we know how much it means to the many students who have asked about free printing. After all, the Student Government Association represents the student body and as an organization run by and for the students, SGA focuses on hearing every voice.
