CLUBS GUIDEREVIVAL OF THE DEMON After much questioning of the existence of a school news-paper, The Demon is finally back! The Newspaper Club has kicked off the year with a superb start-we have many motivated, talented and dedicated members, eager to voice their opinions and share their fabulous work with the school. As a result of everyone’s enthusiasm, Newspaper Club was able to put together our first issue with very short notice, just in time for the holiday season.

Future issues will be published every two months, each with a special theme. For example, you can definitely look forward to a Valentine’s Day-themed issue of The Demon in February! Our members are planning fun events and contests that everyone can take part in, to be published in up-coming issues. Please keep an eye out for our flyers and announce-ments! Everyone is welcome to submit any articles, photos,

artwork, ads, or announcements that they wish to be published in the newspaper. We hope to be the voice of the student body, and a source of general communication within the school. Newspaper Club meets every Thursday at lunch in Room 508. To join, please come by at Mr. Mehl’s room (508) to leave your contact information, or simply email me at [email protected]. Happy Holidays!

“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled ’till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn’t before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn’t come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”- Dr. Seuss

GETTING IN THE HOLIDAY SPIRIT

Starbucks The smell of ground coffee that surrounds every Star-bucks, along with the promise of a warm drink and a comfy chair is enough to pull almost any Van-couverite inside on a wet, cloudy day. And as of November 1st, the warm light and relaxing music come hand in hand with seasonal drinks—topped with whipped cream preferably, and in red cups. Happy, but not cheesy messages are printed on these cups, like this year’s: “Let’s remem-ber…” or about holiday wishes and telling stories. The infamous cups were released several years ago, and no one seems to have any problems with them. In fact, they are universally loved, though some may argue they arrive too early in the season. There is one downside to the festiveness—while Starbucks red cups are made of 10% recycled materials, the cups themselves are not recyclable or biodegradable, even though there are many other coffee shops which offer greener choices. Fortunately, Starbucks isn’t ignoring the amount of waste they make—they have found ways

to cut their water use significantly, such as offering a 10¢ discount when you bring in your own mug. Nevertheless, there is no overlook-ing the 2 billion Starbucks cups thrown away each year. It is reassuring, while you order a drink to go, to know that Starbucks is working hard to come up with new cups that will have less of an environmental impact. So who knows? Maybe the future will bring greener Christmases in the form of red cups. Edie Chunn

Sagittarius (Nov 22nd - Dec 21st)This winter your luck will change drastically. You will find yourself in a dilemma that will either make or break you. In tough times, remem-ber to follow your instinct. Capricorn (Dec 22nd - Jan 19th)The holidays will bring to you an unexpected surprise. Be wary of a new person in your life. They may have been sent to trick you.

Aquarius (Jan 20th- Feb 18th)

Your hair will return to its normal color.

I would advise against dyeing again, as it may

result in disas-trous consequences.

Also, make sure to be friendly to everybody, as

one of them will help you later on.

Pisces (Feb 19th - Mar 20th)In the holiday season you will not receive the gift you have been dreaming of. But, fret not! If you do all you homework and chores, you will be rewarded further on. Aries (March 21st-19th)Be extra cautious this holiday season and be very kind to your family, as there will be many occa-sions this coming year where you will need to rely on them.

Taurus (April 20th-May 20th)Pay attention to the news, there may be something of importance to you. Also, watch your preju-dices; they will get you into trouble if you are not careful. Gemini (May 21st-June 20th)You will receive everything on your list, other than the one thing you want most this winter. In order to obtain that special gift, you must work hard to prove your worthi-ness. Cancer (June 21st-July 22nd)Now is the time to go all out! If you don’t, you may regret what could have been. Leo (July 23rd-August 22nd) Try something new this winter. That is all. Virgo (August 23nd-Septem-ber 22nd)Stay home and don’t go to parties this season. You’ll thank me later. Or you could thank me now… Libra (September 23rd- Oc-tober 22nd)You’d better watch out. You’d better not cry. You’d better not pout, I’m telling you why: be happy with what you have, it could all be taken away this season if you whine. Be grateful. Scorpio (Oct 23rd - Nov 21st)

Strive to become even nicer, and to be a better person. You will be

rewarded for your kindness.

Note from the Editor, re Anonymous Submissions, KLF and others: We have recently received an anonymous submission from the Kitsilano Liberation Front. In its submission, KLF has expressed negative opinions of the Kitsilano Student Council. We welcome views and opinions from all perspectives, but as we will follow the journalistic standard of not allowing anonymous submissions, we have decided to refrain from publishing its letter. It

is our belief that all comments made about groups or individuals should have a name attached. The Demon remains free from judgement, bias, and prejudice. We believe that it is our duty to express the views and needs of all Kitsilano students, and so so with respect. Therefore, if the KLF decides to resubmit its opinion and state their identity, we will be more than happy to publish it. Thank you for your understanding.

This is a section of the newspaper where the outstanding works of many Kitsilano students are displayed. We welcome submis-sions of all kinds; artworks, photography, literature, cartoons, critiques, etc. To see your work publsihed in The Demon, please submit them to [email protected]!

Kitsilano’s Indoor Track Meet 2011

A tradition that has been carried on at Kitsilano Second-ary School for over half a century, the Indoor Track Meet never fails to excite grade 8s and grade 12s alike. Without a doubt, everyone expected this year’s ITM to be an outstanding competition. The first day of the ITM opened with the grade 9s, who left the score with Red in 1st place by just five points, but Gold far back in last place, 38 points behind Red. These uncharacteristic standings made it obvious from the get-go that this year’s ITM would be full of surprises; Gold’s four-year supremacy of the ITM looked like it was being challenged. Later that day came the Seniors- the most experienced and physically developed age group of the school. This being the fifth year for the grade 12s at the ITM, the history of their grade was monoto-nous: Gold had won their grade the past four years in a row. With stunning athletic performances by the likes of David Burton (Gold), Hannah Gilgoff (Green), Jacob Vanderpas (Blue), and Kelsey Liv-ingstone (Red), it was difficult at first to see who had the definitive upper-hand. By the end, however,

Red had won by a significant margin, a historical feat that Gold, sitting in second place, swallowed with difficulty. As the competition reopened on the second day, Red sat comfortably in the lead with an aggregated 266 points, with Blue holding 218 points, Gold 202 points, and Green

merely 190 points. Yet greater comebacks have been made in the past, and not everyone was hold-ing their breath for Red to win- the competition was only halfway done. The grade 10s were up next, and had much closer results than the grade 9s or the Seniors. This still left Red in 1st place with an enormous lead. It was up to the grade 8s to see if the tides could be turned. Could Red’s 40-point lead be defeated?

The final afternoon of the ITM 2011 it was time for the grade 8s to take the stage. Team Leaders such as Tom Campbell (Green) and Alex Vidic (Gold) poured out their encouragement in order to spur their teams to stop Red from winning. In the end, their inspiration was simply insufficient to dig themselves out of the hole that they had been dug into. Red’s grade 8s kept their own, but the scores were the closest of any grade. Such close competition made for an exciting ITM for the grade 8s, but left many students disappointed: Red had made his-tory, stealing the crown that Gold had worn for the past four years. The new blood of the grade 8s revealed that the competition for them was very close. At the other end of the spectrum, the soon-to-graduate Grade 12s make their exit after labouring for five years to upset Gold’s dominance. With Red celebrating a long-awaited victory while the other colours plot to re-double their efforts next year, this year’s historical Indoor Track Meet closes with a cheer and a bang.

Intriguing Travel: Malta

Malta is a European micro-state situated just south of Sicily in the glittering azure waters of the Mediterranean. Made up of three tiny islands, the largest being only twice the size of Vancouver, it is one of the smallest and most densely populated countries in the world. The country’s official languages are English and Maltese.

History Due to the their strategic position in the centre of the Medi-terranean, the islands have been fought over for millennia. Ancient rulers have all left traces of their cultures. More recently, the islands were conquered in the Middle Ages by the crusading Knights of St. John, who not only built fortifications, but entire cities. The capital city Valletta was founded in 1566 after having led the Knights to victory against the Ottomans. It was built in the Baroque style, and to this day is an architectural gem.

Attractions - The crystal clear, turquoise waters of Malta’s Blue Lagoon seem as though they are straight out of a postcard, and will make you feel like you’re in paradise. - Valletta’s waterfront is home to shops, cafes, bars, and restau-rants. It is the perfect place to relax and take in the view of the harbour and surrounding city. - Hagar Qim is a 5000 year old group of temples and a UNESCO World Heritage site. These build-ings are thousands of years older than Stonehenge and the Great Pyramids, and just as interesting!

REVIEWSCONCERTS IN 30 SECS

Local Natives & The National: My opinion is biased; Local Natives are amazing while The National is a band best suited for yuppies. I am not a yuppie. The visuals enthralled me more than their performance. Real Estate: Cute boys playing instruments, what can go wrong? Nothing. It’s an added bonus if the music they’re playing is good, too (it was). The set list couldn’t have been better, and the crowd loved it. Grimes: Great scene, funky (good, funky) instrumentals, funky (funky, like cheese that’s gone bad, funky) vocals. Montreal native Claire Boucher may have been nervous playing her second head-lining act, nonetheless her singing was… grimy. WU LYF: Energetic, great stage presence, in a mosh pit surround-ed by shirtless, bearded men. I’d love a do-over. RECENT ALBUMS

Coldplay – Mylo Xyloto• My father said it best: “this

album does nothing for me,” and let me tell you, the man has an impeccable old person music taste. I’ll congratulate the band; they achieved huge success with their new album. Honestly though, where’s the Coldplay that produced Para-chutes? I didn’t expect this

band to lose sight of why you should make music. Seriously guys, featuring Rihanna in a song? Let’s get real.

Girls – Father, Son, Holy Ghost• Girls vocalist Christopher

Owens’ lazy singing makes this album sound effortless. With strong background sing-ers and face melting guitar solos, certain tracks are remi-niscent to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. Nowhere near as influential, but sound-ing similar to such a timeless album is never a bad thing.

Neon Indian – Era Extraña• Mmm, chillwave. One of my

new interests when it comes to genres. A genre that Neon Indian has mastered. Fans won’t be disappointed with their new songs; the viva-ciousness of the first album is still present. The best track is Polish Girl. But why listen to me when you could listen to the album and form your own opinions. Yay! Opinions!

Book Review: Steve Jobs What crosses your mind when you think about Steve Jobs? Based on the enormous public reaction to news of his death, it is obvious that he was an important figure to many people. However, Walter Isaac-son, the only biographer who was granted the unshackled accession to Steve Jobs, did not take this chance to celebrate Jobs as a vener-able genius. Instead, he described him as a mortal, who could be hotheaded and irresponsible sometimes as well.

This biography reveals lots of terrific details of the per-sonal life of Steve Jobs (including his romantic history), as well as his longtime rivalry with Bill Gates. I recommend this biogra-phy to anyone who wants to take some surprising peeks into the life and soul of the most successful innovator of the 21st century.
