THE DEMON SUMMER EDITION

Hey Demons,

I would like to begin by saying that being the editor of The Demon for the past two years has been one of the most rewarding and special experiences. The present Kitsilano Newspaper Club first started off two years ago, in December of 2011, with a Holiday Edition proudly titled “Revival of the Demon”. Prior to this issue, The Demon was led by Mr. Mehl for many years, and had a much more traditional layout. (Past copies of The Demon are available electronically on the school website under Students, Kits Demon Newspaper.) Although the past Newspaper Club went strong for the first couple years, the submissions started to go downhill, and the last of the “traditional” Demon was February of 2010.

And this is where the present Kitsilano Newspaper Club comes in! In 2011, I had approached Mr. Mehl with the idea of creating a modern, magazine-style school newspaper that would be both fun and informative for fellow students. Since that day, I feel privileged to have been able to work with such an enthusiastic and passionate group of people. Over the past years, we have experienced the sorrow of saying goodbyes to graduating members, and the joy of greeting new members to the team. I would also like to acknowledge Edie Chunn, who has accompanied me from 2011 to 2013 demon-strating amazing dedication and passion throughout the day, and will be editing future editions of The Demon! (Edie edited the April edition this year, which is available electronically online.)

This June 2013 edition of The Demon is where I leave my mark with the Kitsilano Newspaper, which lies so near and dear to my heart. I wish all the best to future members of The Demon, and of course, to Edie and Mr. Mehl, who have supported me throughout the years! Laura Kim, Editor

STUDENT COUNCIL:2013-14

INTERVIEW WITH THE NEXT-UP PRESIDENT!Q: How does it feel to have been on student council all throughout your highschool career? A: A little sneaky, having only been elected once. But I’ve enjoyed having a different perspective and level of involvement in the school, and being able to give people answers on what’s going on and represent them in student council.

Q: How has being on student council changed you as an indi-vidual? A: Running for and being on student council has really made me more confident and prepared to take on responsibility! When I

first joined, I was about ready to run and hide if anyone challenged me for the position, but now I feel more at ease speaking up and ready for anything.

Q: If we had an election, what would your campaign be?A: I would probably urge you to accept me as your evil overlord. Threats could be involved. Seri-ously though, while I was collect-ing nominations I was preparing for a campaign by asking what would interest people most--so I’d say more fun spirit events like PJ days, and bringing back and better publicising our successful events

Q: What is your favorite thing about student council?A: I feel like I have a voice in what happens at Kitsilano, and get to be involved in making our school more welcoming and interesting--and handling all the fun parts of school.

Q: What do you think distinguish-es you from past presidents?A: Although I’ve learned a lot from past presidents and councils, this next year I especially want to make sure we represent all students and find more ways to unite and inspire school spirit in Kitsilano.

SUMMER PLANS? Hooray! Summer is finally here! School is almost out and it is time to get excited over everything you will do this summer. The ques-tion remains, what to do after ac-ing those finals? Every year it is the same thing: go to the beach a cou-ple times and then slump back on the couch watching reruns of ter-rible TV shows. Luckily, this year I have five ways for you to get out of your slump and back on your feet to take in all those vitamin D rays in before the orange leaves starting falling once again.

1. Go to Play land I know, I know. Every year it’s the same thing, but come on. What could be more exhilarating than getting soaked and sloshed on the log ride (with your best friend by your side), winning prizes that nobody in the right mind would want, eating cotton candy and fried dough and going up 218ft on the Atmosphere? I couldn’t think of anything either. If it’s ever too much to handle, there’s always the Ferris wheel which can be very re-laxing (especially when you get to the top). Enjoy the high energy; neon lit excitement while it lasts because before you know it, it will be all packed up and gone until next year.

2. Go to the Beach When you think “summer” the beach usually comes to mind. Go to Kitsilano, Jericho, or Locarno and enjoy the sand beneath your feet. You can build sand castles, read a book under an umbrella, BBQ, paddle board, pack a picnic, or go swimming (if you’re brave enough). My advice is to get a wet suit if you plan on going swimming (it surprisingly helps). Nothing feels better than listening to the sound of the waves while feeling the wonderful grains of sand un-der your toes as you walk along the shore.

3. Go Camping Sometimes, we all just need to escape the modern world. No mat-ter if you go to a faraway camp site or even just in your backyard, there is nothing quite like eating food over open flames, uncomfort-able yet cozy sleeping bags and the wonderful smell of fresh air. Sure, there is always days when it rains and your mosquito bites are super itchy, but who cares? Nothing says unplugging from the hectic world like roasting marshmallows over an open fire and looking at the wondrous constellations in the sky. Save me a smore, would you?

4. Go to a Concert Summer wouldn’t be summer without great music! This sum-mer, lots of fantastic artists will be performing at the Rogers Arena and the BC Place Stadium. Some include: Taylor Swift, One Direc-tion, Bruno Mars, Jay-Z, etc. Now if these artists aren’t your taste or if you’re running low on dough, you can always go to one of the free, outdoor concerts such as the jazz festival or the folk festival. What could be better than listening to good music in the sunshine with no expenses?

5. Have a Water Gun Fight! This is one of my FAVORITE things to do all summer! Grab a bunch of friends and family mem-bers and let the competition begin! There is nothing like getting squirt-ed, soaked, and drenched with a water gun on a hot summer day! Why not add some water balloons, buckets, spray bottles, or whatever else you can find to make it more enticing and fun! WARNING: somebody always grabs the hose and turns it on full force!!!!!!!

PLACES TO EAT IN VANCOUVER! The homestretch of the school year is finally upon us. However, with this sudden burst of libera-tion from our classes comes per-haps an even more difficult task: supplying for your ever grumbling stomach. Surely you don’t want to spend your 2 months of freedom loitering around Kits doing the classic Benny’s/Nat’s lunch run like you did for the past 10 months. No, you deserve better. Vancouver is chalked full of good food-joints, so many perhaps that you may be anxiously thinking “where do I possibly begin?”. Fret not my lovelies, I have you covered. Here is a list of solid standouts for every occasion.

1. FRIENDS NIGHT - Tanpopo Japanese Restaurant (1122 Denman St) This hard-to-find Japanese restaurant is located upstairs in the West end only a few blocks from English Bay (complete with view). It features the classic Japanese fa-vorites, such a sushi, tempura and teriyaki and an All-You-Can-Eat menu for only $12! So starve your-self for a few days, grab a bunch of your friends and let loose. Be sure to wear elastic waist pants!

2. LATE NIGHT CRAVINGS – Smoke’s Poutinerie (942 Granville Street) You know those times where you’ve been up “carousing” til the wee hours of the night and you find yourself craving anything with grease? Well this place has you covered. Started from a food truck in Toronto, Smoke’s Poutinerie has spread throughout Canada and has recently arrived in Vancouver. The food can be summed up in three words: irresistibly delicious pou-tine. It has all types, from the clas-sic Quebecois staple to “Chicken Fajita Poutine” (and some veggie options too). Enjoy.

3. FAMILY EXCURSION – Nuba (3116 W. Broadway and 207 W. Hastings Street) After giving in to those greasy-cravings you might need to ‘cleanse’ yourself for a little bit and this fresh Lebanese restaurant is just the thing. Not too far afield from Kits, this place has a very cool atmosphere and is vegetarian/vegan-friendly and features Halal meat. The plates are small so you can try a lot! Order as much as you can and share, be sure to have the Garden Falafel dish!

4. CASUAL DATE NIGHT – Bob Likes Thai Food (1521 W. Broad-way) Don’t let the outside appearance of this hole-in-the-wall restaurant fool you, inside is a funky gem of a restaurant that boasts the best “home-style” Thai food in the city. The Pad Thai and the Green Curry Chicken are to die for and all the food comes at a very reasonable price. Beware not to come on a first date though; it is definitely not easy to look good while slurping up noodles.

5) BRUNCH – Jethros Fine Grub (3420 Dunbar Street) Recently voted Vancouver’s ‘Best Brunch’ and featured on the Food Network’s ‘Diner’s, Drive-in’s and Dives” it is not surprising that this place can often be spotted with a line-up stretching out the door and around the corner on weekends. Its claim to fame is “The Gold Rush”: a heaping por-tion of banana pancakes topped and stuffed with caramel, pecans, streusel and whipped butter all for only $12. Come for brunch on a weekday or else be prepared to wait.

ACTIVE LIFE-STYLE TIPS Males and females alike are constantly striving to get in bet-ter shape, and with summer just around the corner, we are all wish-ing that we had put down the ice cream and picked up the weights instead. But before you try (and fail at) an extreme diet or unrealis-tic workout plan, consider making some simple yet effective changes that will lead you to an active and healthy lifestyle. With these easy tips, you will gain confidence and improve your health just in time for summer!

1. Skip the wheels and use your heels! Living an active life doesn’t mean you have to run a marathon everyday. Simply increasing your level of physical activity in day-to-day situations is an excellent step towards an active lifestyle. Lets be honest, Vancouver isn’t a city like Los Angeles where the highway is the only way; Vancouver is a city of bike paths and sidewalks! In-stead of driving or bussing to your friend’s house, why not walk or take a bike? With the rainy months behind us, you have no excuse not to make the healthy choice!

2. Stop slouching! You know how your mom is always coming up behind you tell-ing you to stand up straight? Well mine certainly is, and it sure can be annoying…but it turns out she is on to something! Maintaining good posture not only improves your breathing and promotes strength and stability but it also firms up your abdominal muscles! So basically…STOP SLOUCH-ING!

3. Take the stairs! You know the StairMaster cardio machines at the gym? Well instead of paying for the gym… you could just use the real thing for free: STAIRS. Making simple and easy choices like taking the stairs over the elevator or escalator are more effective than you think, especially for those of you who live in apartments! Just remember: a few stairs a day keep the flabby butt away!

4. Set realistic goals If you are someone who never exercises, it may not be realistic to start by going for an hour long run. Start slowly when it comes to

physical activity and don’t expect perfection your first time at the gym. Start with run/walk inter-vals and over time, decrease the amount you walk and increase the amount that you run. Before you know it, that same run that used to make you feel like you were going to die will be a breeze!

5. Make your study breaks produc-tive! With finals looming before us, it’s getting to be that time of year where we spend our lives with our noses buried in our textbooks. Usually, when we come out of our study cave, it’s to zone out and watch some T.V or mindlessly scroll through Facebook. However, why not try going for a nice walk in the summer sun? Not only is a mid-study-stroll a good way to fit in some exercise, but walks are proven to make you think and process information much better! Plus, any excuse for a study break is a good one if you ask me!

“GIRL POWER” AND THE BICYCLE: THE STORY OF ANNIE LONDONDERRY Now, the first thing that you should know about Annie Lon-donderry, a woman who, on the 25th of June, 1894, embarked on a 15-month long journey around the world—on a bicycle—on her own—is that her name is not, in fact, Annie Londonderry. 23-year-old Annie Cohen Kopcho-vsky adopted the name “Lon-donderry” as she pedaled around the globe (leaving behind her husband and three small children) because the Londonderry Spring Water company had agreed to sponsor her adventure. But why set out on this Jules Verne Around the World in Eighty Days-esque expedition? Similarly enough to Verne’s own work, Annie had taken part in some kind of a wager, awarding her $10 000 if she could cycle around the world in under 15 months—the record of a man in that time. Naturally, there was a catch: over the course of her circuit, Annie would have to earn $5000 of her own, without accepting the charity or help of others. Would a brassy, sassy, and

gutsy young woman like Lon-donderry let this stop her? Of course not! Annie returned to Chicago on September 12th, 1895—well before her deadline, and with the $5000, which she had scrounged up by doing public performances recounting her experiences around the world and by selling autographed (and often staged) photographs of herself en route. After receiving the promised $10 000, Annie moved to New York, where she worked as a writer and journalist. She was a phe-nomenon during those last few years of the nineteenth century—a businesswoman and a genius with public relations, as well as being one of the first to shed bone-crushing corsets and twenty pound Victorian dresses for more avant-garde, masculine clothing. During her ride, Londonderry abandoned her dresses and skirts for bloom-ers, then later doffed the bloomers and donned a man’s riding suit, eschewing all articles of classically feminine clothing. As she wrote in her first article for the New York

World, “I am a journalist and a ‘new woman,’ if that term means I believe that I can do anything that any man can do.”So whatever happened to An-nie Kopchovsky? She made her mark, then disappeared into the mists of time, obscured by other historical figures and events which eclipse her own small but innova-tive adventure. Her story, though lost, is still pretty interesting, and brings up all kinds of big ideas. Londonderry was a pioneer of the North American feminist move-ment; the great bicycle wheel of time rolling on towards the suffragettes, then other women’s rights movements, such as work-place and legal equality. It also makes us think about things like our own identities—what would it have taken for Annie to change her name, simply for sponsorship? But here’s the thing—when it comes down to it, what her story really makes me want to do, is bike.

HOW NOT TO BE OBNOXIOUS... (EXCLUSIVE ARTICLE FROM OUR COVER ARTIST)

Summer is almost here, and I know what you’re thinking: “Fi-nally. Now I can stop sitting alone in my room with my computer, and start sitting alone in my room with my computer with the fan on. Praise the Lord!” Wait. You’re not me? That’s not what you’re thinking? Fine. Well, if you’re lucky enough to get to spend the summer here at home, you’re probably daydreaming about those traditional summer activities that are Vancouver’s trademark, such as Recreational Mosquito Swatting ™ (Blood-Sucking Fun for the Whole Family!), Canadian Sunbathing © (16°C is Good Enough for Us, Eh?) or Trying Not to Touch Sweaty People on the Bus™ (The World’s Most Moist Obstacle Course!). Of course, there are a few unfortunate souls who, in the months to come, will be forced to leave our home and native land, and dragged by their cruel families to various disgustingly tropical destinations. Know that our hearts go out to you, poor lost lambs, but also know this; when you come back to the True North strong and

free, there are a couple things you should keep in mind. Actually, it’s more like just one, big, important thing- Don’t be so gosh-darned obnoxious. “But Chloe,” you cry fretfully, shaking your already-packed suitcases and oversized sunglasses at me in distress, “how do I do that?” Hush now, lilies of my heart, for I am here to guide you with all of my infinite tender-ness and un-ending patience. I am going to provide you with a few easy steps that, if followed, will prevent you from returning to Vancouver as a tan, happy jerk.

1. ACCENTS. This is not a drill people. This is the real thing. I am going to put an end to the Borrowed Accent Epidemic, starting now. While it is true that if you spend long enough in a different country you are likely to acquire the local accent, the two weeks you spent in England are not sufficient justification for your newfound fancy-speak.

2. AESTHETIC ADJUSTMENTS. I’m not talking about new clothes, here. Buy all the saris and

sombreros your little hearts desire, my dear travellers. Pick up some of those “I Heart Chernobyl” T-shirts with the five sleeves. Even get cornrows, if you have to. Just don’t try and play coy. Don’t leave home a brunette and come back blonder than Thor himself, and then claim it was “just the sun bringing out my natural highlights.” You’re fool-ing no one. This doesn’t just go for the ladies- I’m talking to you too, fellas.

3. NNS (Nearly Nude Selfies) We get it, my lovely. There are beautiful white-sand beaches where you are, it’s sunny, and the sangria flows like water. But does that really mean you need to post album after album of a naked you (with your bits and bobs cov-ered up by the smallest scraps of stretchy fabric) on every social networking site there is? Good Luck and Safe Passage, apples of mine eye.

Perennially Yours, Chloe Price
