Kinhaven is . . .A summer of playing classical music with people who love nothing better. New friends, expert instructors who care, great homecooked food, beautiful countryside all around you, and an atmosphere of genuine sharing and support.

At Kinhaven Music School we’ve been making this dream come true for over 60 years.

Kinhaven is a unique summer school in the rolling green hills of Weston,Vermont. Every year, 90 musicians are accepted for the Senior Session and 70 musicians are accepted for the Junior Session.

To meet qualifying standards, we select students based on audition. After you are admitted, the competition ends. Our commitment to mutual support rather than rivalry distinguishes Kinhaven from many other music schools.

Chamber music is at the heart of the program. You will play in several cham-ber groups, large ensembles, symphony orchestra, and have the opportunity to participate in master classes and studio performance classes. You will have many public performance opportunities.

The spirit of Kinhaven inspires plenty of spontaneous music making, singing, and chamber music reading sessions. The afternoons lend themselves nicely to many non-musical activities, but also are perfect additional practice hours for those that wish a more intense experience.

Kinhaven is on a 31-acre campus and has unlimited offerings, musical and recreational. Vermont in the summer is irresistible; Kinhaven offers glorious opportunities in music-making and even more important, friendships.

Whatever else I might venture into the future, I know that I will always remember the summers I spent at Kinhaven. Kinhaven has an experienced and dedicated faculty. We choose teachers as much for their sensitivity as for their professional excellence. Our Kinhaven Faculty perform in professional and highly acclaimed chamber music groups or orchestras, and many teach at leading universities and colleges around the United States. Through our faculty and the legacy that each of them carry onward, students are exposed to the teachings of Dorothy DeLay, David Finckel, Joseph Alessi, Ricardo Morales, and Mena-hem Pressler, to name only a few.

Outside the studio they might be on your softball team, or join you on the “sitting-hill.” Most students find their teachers are more than teachers; they are friends and companions too.

You may or may not have professional ambitions, what matters is that you love to play. Our program is designed to help you grow in musical appreciation, sharpen your performance skills, and allow you time and space to explore your own creative potential.

Kinhaven has a rotational rather than a challenge system. Orchestra seatings and chamber music assignments change weekly. Throughout the summer you will perform varied styles of music, play with many different musicians, and experience various positions in the orchestra. The student body of Kinhaven’s Senior Session is based on the size of a full symphony orchestra, with double winds and brasses. We also accept six to eight pianists.

Chamber MusicThe heart of the Kinhaven music program is chamber music.Each student is assigned to a chamber group with a coach and a musical work appropriate to the group’s ability. After studying and performing the composition, you will be assigned to other ensembles with new coaches and new pieces.

Private LessonsYou will have at least one private lesson a week on your major instrument. Your teacher may want to meet with you more often to review your progress. This close personal support helps you prepare for performances and adopt productive practice habits. Many teachers host a studio/performance class so that students have the chance to perform solo works.

OrchestraThe orchestra plays classical symphonic repertoire. The nightly rehearsals culminate in the performance of a movement or two or an overture every Sunday afternoon. In the past few years the orchestra has played:

Composer-in-ResidenceKinhaven is fortunate to have Nicolas Scherzinger, Chair of the Composition and Theory Departments at the Setnor School of Music, Syracuse University. He holds a DMA in composition from the Eastman School of Music. Private lessons, seminars and per-formances are open to serious student composers. See the website for more information.

ChorusThree times a week, all Kinhaven students gather together as a chorus. This chorus includes singers with a wide range of tech-nical ability. It is through this communal singing that we come closest to the founders' vision of music-making.

CompositionAspiring composers have the option to study composition in private and small group settings with Composer-in-Residence, Nicolas Scherzinger. In addition to lessons, students can attend composition seminars (master classes), which cover such topics as preparing score and parts, notation standards, composition and analysis, performance and analysis, counterpoint, musical form, orchestration, theoretical concepts, and other topics related to contemporary music and composition. Each summer there is one public concert devoted solely to the performance of student compositions.

Piano at KinhavenPiano majors are placed in chamber music groups, receive several coachings per week and perform in student concerts. Students have private lessons on chamber music and solo repertoire. Ample practice time is assigned on our numerous grand pianos. Weekly sight-reading sessions are offered to give pianists the skills they need to learn music more quickly. Those pianists with secondary instruments may participate in instrumental ensembles.See the website for more information.

AdmissionsKinhaven accepts 90 students, ages 13-18. This is to include graduat-ing 8th grades and graduating seniors regardless of age. Everyone is required to audition by CD or sound file or in person. Check the website for times and locations of live auditions.

The admissions process begins after January 1. Applications with CD or sound file are accepted until each class is filled. Most of the decisions are made by the end of March. We are happy to provide information about openings at any time.

The CD or sound file should have should have a representative piece of your choice, five to ten minutes, and be sent to the Ad-missions Office. CDs, VHS video tape, DVDs, or electronic submis-sions are welcome. Tips for recordings can be found on our web-site.

Dates & TuitionThe senior session will run for six weeks from June 22 to August 5, 2012. Students are accepted for the entire time only. Tuition is $6,650.00. After you have been accepted we require a non-refundable deposit of $900.00 in order to secure your place in our enrollment. The balance is due by May 15th.All tuition payments are non-refundable.There are no extra charges for lessons, laundry, etc.

Her piano teachers were inspiring. The chorus was so much fun. Amalia returned home and made an oil painting of Hindemith after hearing his music played by the Orchestra in the summer. At Kinhaven it seems as if it was just the right combination of smart pas-sionate and generous human beings. What a treat!! Thank you for this place.

For the twenty-third year, Kinhaven continues to offer a two-week program

for younger musicians. The program for the Junior Session is open to string

players, wind players, brass players, and pianists.

The Faculty consists of a full complement of professional musicians, all skilled teachers, coaches and performers.

The Music Program is comprehensive, including pri-vate lessons, daily chamber music coachings, string orchestra, wind ensemble, brass choir, full orchestra, chorus, and public performances.

Recreation is ample with swimming, tennis, ping pong, soc-cer, folk-dancing, hikes, scavenger hunts, pottery, silk-screening, brookwalks, visits to Weston, volleyball, cook-outs, softball, and lots more.

Concerts are held on both weekends and are open to the public. All students perform each weekend. The final Sunday morning concert ends the session, sending everyone home with two weeks of very special memories.

The Mornings consist of chamber music, lessons, and practicing. Everyone has scheduled hours to practice and every-one will be assigned to at least one chamber music group. En-sembles receive daily coachings. Lessons will focus on learning good practice habits and on music for performance.

The Afternoons are free for everyone to enjoy the beautiful Vermont surroundings. Many games, hikes and trips are planned by our ambitious activities staff. Before dinner, either the chorus meets, rehearsals are planned, or free time is extended.

The Evenings offer string orchestra, full orchestra, in-formal recitals, or an all-camp volleyball game or folk-danc-ing. A snack before bedtime and story-telling in the cabins will complete the day

General InformationRelaxationOur comprehensive afternoon program has something for everyone. The beautiful swim-ming pond, volleyball court, soccer field, basketball court, tennis court, and ping pong tables are available to all. Hikes, brook walks, and walks into town are easily organized, and our activities staff plans outings, games, track meets, scavenger hunts, the annual regatta, folk dancing, and strawberry picking!

The art house has a fully equipped pottery studio for beginners and experienced ceramists alike; sculpture, drawing, painting, carving, silk-screening, and even tie-dying can fill your afternoons.

Quiet time is precious too. The afternoon can be yours to read, practice, play chess or cards, compose, or indulge in a favorite Kinhaven pastime, “hill-sitting.”

FacilitiesThe Kinhaven Kitchen is famous for its delicious home-made fare – fresh, nutritious, and definitely non-institu-tional. Breads and coffee cakes are baked daily. Lasagna, pizza, quiches, soups, pesto, burritos, and desserts are all made from “scratch” by our dedicated cooks. Non-meat dishes are available for our growing vegetarian popula-tion. Meals are times of good eating, socializing, and are the focal point of communication within the Kinhaven community.

The Concert Hall houses the symphony orchestra and the chorus. It holds an audience of 200. All of the public concerts are presented in the Concert Hall. Everything from nightly orchestra rehearsals to large percussion pieces to weekly folk dancing takes place in this warm, wooden building.

Practice cabins are sprouting up all over the spacious campus. Morning time is assigned to everyone for practice. Practice spaces are available to all students during free time.

Students live in cabins which were recently built. Students live in spacious rooms and have a counselor nearby. There are daily cabin inspections, ensuring living areas are always extremely clean.

Other facilities include a first aid center which is well-equipped and hopefully rarely used. A very large rehearsal building reserved for brasses is called Crescendo. We have an exhaustive chamber music library. Our ten grand pianos, including six Steinways, are continually being upgraded and restored. In the Concert Hall, in addition to our best Steinway, is a small pipe organ and a harpsichord.

The Common Room has a fireplace, games, and comfortable couches for those chilly days. Students gather for non-musical relaxation and coziness.

Faculty BiographiesExecutive Directors; Program Directors, Senior SessionDeborah Buck, Violin, has a full and varied career as the first violinist of the LARK Quartet, Concertmaster of the Brooklyn Philharmonic, and as a recitalist and concerto soloist. She was educated at The Juilliard School as a Starling student of Dorothy DeLay and at the University of Southern California where she was a pupil of Robert Lipsett. Most recently, Deborah and the LARK Quartet recorded with pianist, Gary Graffman the piano quintet of Pulitzer Prize win-ner, Jennifer Higdon for Bridge Records. This past fall included a recital in Los Angeles and concerts with LARK in New York, Washington D.C., and Los Angeles. An avid teacher, Debbie has a thriving private studio of violinists in Maplewood, NJ. This past July, she celebrated her eleventh summer on faculty at the Kinhaven Music School.

Anthony Mazzocchi, Trombone, received his BM and MM degrees from the Manhattan School of Music. He received the Janet Schenck Award for Out-standing Musicianship from the school in 1997. Tony has performed with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, New Jersey Symphony, San Diego Symphony, in vari-ous Broadway shows and numerous recordings and movie soundtracks. He currently serves as Trombone Professor at Montclair State and Kean Universities in New Jersey, and is Director of Fine Arts for the South Orange/Maplewood school district in NJ. Tony has been a soloist, clinician, or guest lecturer at The Juilliard School, Manhattan School of Music, New York University, Montclair State University, Mannes and North Carolina School of the Arts.

Program Directors, Junior SessionSandy Dennis, Piano, received her BM and MMT degrees from Oberlin Conservatory, and her MM from The Juilliard School. Her teachers include Beveridge Webster, Arthur Dann, and Bonnee Hendricks Hoy. Sandy currently teaches at The Williston Northampton School in Easthampton, MA, Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA, and privately, and performs regularly throughout the New England area.

Martha Knieriem, Viola/Violin, has a BM in Viola Performance from the University of North Carolina and an MM from Ithaca College. She also studied at the Eastman School of Music and the Hartt School of Music. Her principal teachers include Heidi Castle-man and Scott Nickrenz. She teaches at the Smith College Campus School and the Community Music School of Springfield, where she directs the Young People’s String Program and String City orchestra. She has been a member of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra since 1981.

Music Faculty, Summer, 2011John Bannon, Percussion, Sr., is Principal Timpanist with The Florida Orchestra, and teaches conducting at St. Petersburg College. He was formerly Princi-pal Timpanist with the Anchorage Symphony, the Oklahoma Symphony, the Orquesta Sinfonica de Mineria in Mexico City, the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder, and the Honolulu Symphony. He earned degrees in Percussion Performance from the Uni-versity of South Florida (BA) and the University of Michigan (MM), and in Instrumental Conducting (DMA) from the University of Miami.

Jerry T. Bidlack, Choral Director, was the full-time Conductor at Kinhaven from 1968-2003. He served as Director from 1981 – 2003. Jerry was a professor of music at Lehigh University for 25 years, and served as chairman for six years. In 1976 he co-founded the Young People’s Philharmonic of the Lehigh Valley along with his wife, Nancy. He is currently the conductor of the Kinhaven choruses.

Mari Black, Violin, Jr., received her MM and Artist Diploma from the Yale School of Music. Active as a classical performer and teacher, she is also a progressive jazz and folk musician, appearing with artists such as Mark O’Connor and Willie Ruff in live performance and media broadcasts. Mari is currently completing her doctorate at Columbia University’s Teachers College, where her research focuses on developing a college music curriculum that features the study of many different styles of music.

Robert Blaine, Brass, Jr., received his BM from Indiana U., his MM from Catholic U. and his DMA from Eastman. He has studied with Edwin Ander-son, Milton Stephens and John Marcellus. He has served on the faculties of the University of Louisiana at Monroe, SUNY Geneseo, Nazareth College and Eastman School of Music. He has held positions as principal trombone of the National Symphony of the Dominican Republic and second trombone of the Charleston (SC) Symphony. Presently, Dr. Blaine is the Director of Orchestra Studies at Jackson State University in Mississippi and performs with the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra.

Hubert Chen, Violin, Jr. A native New Yorker, Hubert Chen received his BA from SUNY Geneseo after 8 years at Juilliard Pre-College. His primary teachers have been Margaret Pardee, Laura Balkin and Eric Lewis. He has been coached in chamber music by the Manhattan String Quartet, Tremont String Quartet, Edward Melkus, Kermit Moore, and Mark Steinberg. He completed his long-term Suzuki Method training at the School for Strings and is certified in Kodaly Level I. He is on faculty at the Diller-Quaile School of Music for violin and musicianship/music theory.

Logan Coale, Bass, Sr., received his BM and MM from Boston University and his primary teachers were Todd Seeber, Edwin Barker and Tim Pitts. He has performed with the San Antonio Symphony, the Sarasota Opera, and the Alarm Will Sound Ensemble. He is presently free lancing in New York City and is a member of the NOW Ensemble.

Nicholas DiEugenio, Violin, Sr., holds degrees from the Cleveland Institute of Music (BM, MM ’05), where he studied with David Cerone, Linda Cerone, and Paul Kantor, and from the Yale School of Music (Artist Diploma ’08, MMA ‘09), where he studied with Ani Kavafian, was a recipient of the Alumni Foundation Award, and an AlumniVentures grant. Mr. DiEugenio teaches at the Ithaca College School of Music, where he is Assistant Professor of Violin and Chamber Music. Mr. DiEugenio has given solo performances with the Cleveland Bach Consort, National Repertory Orchestra, Cleveland Pops, CIM Orchestra, and Interlochen’s World Youth Symphony Orchestra.

Adam Grabois, Cello, Sr., has a varied career as chamber musician, soloist, teacher and recording artist and is the founder of the record label Reflex Editions. A resident of New York City, Adam is the cellist of the New York Chamber Solo ists, maintains a private teaching studio and is on the faculty of the Weston Music Center in Connecticut. A Kinhavenalumnus, he later studied with David Finckel and graduated from Swarthmore College. His cello was made by Samuel Zygmuntowicz in Brooklyn in 1998 and his bows were made by Ole Kanestrøm in 2004 and 2008.

Kathleen Foster, Viola/Violin, Jr., graduated from the University of Utah with a Bachelor’s degree and from the Mannes College of Music with an M.M. Her primary teachers were Michael Tree, John Graham, and Mikhail Boguslavsky. She plays Principal Viola for the orchestras of Musica Sacra, New York Oratorio Society, Sacred Music in a Sacred Space, and Lake George Opera. She also regularly freelances with the New Jersey Symphony, Pennsylvania Ballet, and many other groups. She has recently performed chamber music at BargeMusic, Weill Recital Hall, Symphony Space, and the Wintergarden Theater.

Tomoko Fujita, Cello, Sr., is the founding cellist of the Bryant Park Quartet. Tomoko graduated summa cum laude from Rice University with a double degree: a B.M. in cello performance as a student of Norman Fischer; and a B.A. in psychology. She earned a M.M. at The Juilliard School while studying with Joel Krosnick and Darrett Adkins. In addition to being onthe faculty of the Stony Brook University Pre-College Program and coaching at the New York Youth Sym-phony Chamber Music Program, she maintains aprivate studio in New York City and Long Island.

John Kehayas, Bassoon, Sr., is Bassoon Professor at the University of South Florida. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School where he was awarded the Namburg Foundation Scholarship for excellence in music performance. Currently bassoonist/contrabassoonist of the Florida Orchestra, he has performed with The New York Philharmonic and was an inaugural member of The New World Symphony. His teachers included Leonard Sharrow, Sidney Rosenburg, and Judith LeClair.

Micah Killion, Trumpet, Sr., received his BA in Trumpet performance from The Juilliard School and his MA in Music Education at Columbia Uni-versity. His principal teacher was Philip Smith. He has performed with the New Jersey Symphony, the Colorado Symphony, and the Charleston Symphony, and has given numerous workshops. He currently

holds positions at the Third St. Music School and the Music Advancement Program at Juilliard.

Adrienne Kim, Piano, Sr., studied with Menahem Pressler and Leon Fleisher and is on the faculty of Syracuse University. She has concertized in Alice Tully Hall, Merkin Hall, Weill Recital Hall, Bargemusic, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Washington D.C.’s Phillips Gallery and Ravinia’s Rising Stars series in Chicago. She is the resident pianist of the Seal Bay Festival in Maine, and participated in the National Endow-ment for the Arts/Chamber Music America Rural Residency. She has recorded the solo and chamber works of Daniel S. Godfrey with the St. Paul Cham-ber Orchestra and the violin and piano sonatas of Charles Ives with violinist Lisa Tipton.

Kenneth Kwo, Viola, Sr., Jr., was a double major in math and viola at Oberlin College and went on to the University of Iowa to earn his Master’s degree in viola. His primary teachers were David Becker, Kathryn Plummer and William Preucil. Ken has been a member of the Florida Orchestra since 1984.

Amber McPherson, Violin, Jr., completed her under-graduate studies at North Carolina School of the Arts and later earned a degree in early music performance practice at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Leipzig, Germany where she has lived since 1999. There she is active as a freelance Baroque violinist performing and recording primarily in Germany and the Czech Republic with ensembles such as the Dresdner Instrumental Concert, Telemannisches Collegium Michaelstein, Chemnitzer Barock Orches-ter, and Hofmusici.

Aundrey Mitchell, Viola, Sr., graduated from the Cleveland Institute of Music with both her BM and her MM and recieved a DMA from Rutgers University. Her primary teachers were Michael Tree, Karen Ritscher, and Lucian Joel. She has taught at Moravian College, Westminster Choir College, and the PA Academy of Music. She is an active chamber musician in the New York and Philadelphia areas.

Alberto Parinni, cello, Jr. a native of Italy, Alberto graduated from the Curtis Institute and the Juilliard School. His primary teachers were David Soyer, Joel Krosnick, and Timothy Eddy. Formerly he was Ass’t Principal cellist of the Richmond Symphony and a member of the St.Lawrence String Quartet, and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. He is presently with the American Chamber Players and the Proteus Ensemble. He is newly appointed Principal Cellist of the Northeast PA. Philharmonic and is an active freelancer in NYC.

Naho Tsutsui Parrini, Violin, Jr., earned her BM from the North Carolina School of the Arts, and her MM at SUNY Stony Brook. Her primary teachers have been Kevin Lawrence and Mitchell Stern. She is a member of the Transfiguration Ensemble, a resident chamber ensemble in New York City. She recently completed her DMA at SUNY Stony Brook with Philip Setzer and Pamela Frank. She is a Resident Teaching Artist at Bloomingdale School of Music in New York City and a member of the Hyperion String Quartet.

Amali Premawardhana, Cello, Jr., residing in New York City, completed her undergraduate studies at the Manhattan School of Music in 2007. Her primary

teachers have included Julia Lichten and Margo Tat-genhorst-Drakos. Recent performance experience includes the New England Symphonic Ensemble, Zero Gravity Contemporary Music Ensemble, and for esteemed figures such as Kurt Masur, Yo-Yo Ma and Ron Leonard. She currently plays in Tiger Lilies, a duo project that seeks to blend folk music with creative improvisations and arrangements. She also co-directs Classical Revolution New York, a music series that brings classical chamber music performance to unusual venues and audiences all across the city.

Kenneth Rescsanski, Double Bass, Jr., has his Bach-elor’s of Music in Double Bass performance from the Eastman School of Music where his primary teacher was James VanDemark. He has had the opportunity to play with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra in Denver and the Waterbury Symphony Orchestra in Connecticut. He has most recently been freelancing around upstate NY and teaching lessons and running sectionals at the Nazareth College of Rochester.

Peter Rovit, Violin, Sr., received his BM with High Distinction from Indiana University; MM, Hartt School; Professional Studies, Juilliard: DMA, SUNY at Stony Brook. His primary teachers were Josef Gingold, Mitchell Stern and Philip Setzer. Mr. Rovit has been on the string faculty of the University of Oklahoma and the University of Alabama. He has been a member of the Quartet Oklahoma, Associate Concertmaster of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, and Concertmaster of the Tuscaloosa Symphony. He is currently the Violin Professor at Syracuse University.

David Sapadin, Clarinet, Sr., earned his BM at the University of Southern California, his MM at the Manhattan School of Music, and an Artist Diploma from the Mannes School of Music. His principal teachers were Ricardo Morales, Mitchell Lurie, Ye-huda Gilad, and David Krakauer. He is a freelance clarinetist in New York, where he performs with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, the American Symphony, the American Ballet Theater, and the St. Luke’s Chamber Orchestra.

Nicolas Scherzinger, Composer in Residence, Sr., is the chair of the Composition and Theory Depart-ment at the Setnor School of Music at Syracuse Uni-versity where he teaches composition, music theory, improvisation, and digital music. Mr. Scherzinger received a Master of Music and Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition from the Eastman School of Music and has studied composition with Roger Briggs, David Liptak, Augusta Read Thomas, Christopher Rouse, Allan Schindler, and Joseph Schwantner.

Peter Schultz, Flute, Sr., Jr., received his BA from Colby College and his MM from SUNY Stony Brook. He studied with Samuel Baron, Marcel Moyse, Eleanor Lawrence, and Paige Brook. He taught at the Man-hattan School of Music Pre-College. He received his DMA from Manhattan School of Music. He teaches music at Phillips Exeter Academy.

Mimi Solomon, Piano, Sr., graduated cum laude in East Asian Studies from Yale and received her MM from Juilliard. Her main teachers were Peter Frankl and Robert McDonald. She has appeared as soloist with the Shanghai Symphony, Philharmonia Virtuosi, and Yale Symphony Orchestra, among others, and has been heard at festivals such as Santander, Bel-Air, IMS Prussia Cove, Ravinia, Taos, Charlottesville, Norfolk, Yellow Barn, and Aspen. She was a recipient of the Beebe Grant and the Woolley Scholarship.

Shannon Thomas, Violin, Sr., has performed at the Kennedy Center, Spoleto Festival USA, Carnegie Hall, and the Banff Centre where she has collaborated with artists such as the St. Lawrence String Quartet, Danny Phillips, Tara O’Connor, Richard King, and Barry Shiffman. Currently Visiting Instructor of Violin at the University of Southern Mississippi, she has instructed students at various institutions, includ-ing the Cleveland Institute of Music, Vanderbilt University, Yale University, Arizona State University, Rocky Mountain Summer Conservatory, Interlochen Arts Camp, Lee University, and the Aspen Music Festival and School.Ms. Thomas earned a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the Cleveland Institute of Music. She received a Master of Music at Yale University and a Bachelor of Music at Vanderbilt University, and Arizona State University. Her teachers have included Paul Kantor, Cornelia Heard, Jonathan Swartz, and Ani Kavafian.

Carolyn Wahl, French Horn, Sr., graduated from Baldwin Wallace Conservatory and studied with Dale Clevenger, Martin Morris and Lowell Shaw. She was a member of the Chicago Civic Orchestra. She is currently a member of the Florida Orchestra and is on the faculty of St. Petersburg College, the Pinellas County School for the Arts, and coaches brass quintets.

Mary Watt, Oboe, Sr., Jr., received her BM & MM from The Juilliard School. She studied oboe with Ronald Rosemann, John Mack and Richard Killmer. She is Principal Oboe of the Bethlehem Bach Choir Orches-tra and performs regularly with the New England Bach Festival, the New Hampshire Symphony, the Springfielymd Sphony, and the Vermont Symphony. She records for the Dorian and Newport Labels and is currently on the faculty of Phillips Exeter Academy.

Sara Bennett Wolfe, Cello, Jr., is cello faculty at the Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts Extension Division, the Kent Place School, and Westminster Conservatory of Rider University. Sara earned a B.M. in Cello Performance at Indiana University, an M.M. in Cello and Suzuki Pedagogy at the Cleveland Institute of Music and an M.M. in performance from Ithaca College. She has taught cello in CIM’s Preparatory Division and was Principal Cellist of the Mansfield Symphony Orchestra. Her primary teachers include Jonathan Spitz, Merry Peckham, Elizabeth Simkin, and Emilio Colon. Her Suzuki Teacher Trainers include Pam Devenport and Melissa Kraut.

David and Dorothy Dushkin, Kinhaven’s founders, purchased the Vermont prop-erty in 1948 and opened Kinhaven—the summer music program—in 1952 with 19 students. David Dushkin, the Director, emphasized chamber music and Dorothy Dushkin encouraged singing and began the tradition of closing the summer ses-sion with group singing—usually a Bach Cantata. From the beginning, Kinhaven’s central purpose has been the sharing of music through chamber music and singing.

Kinhaven grew in the 1950’s and 1960’s to its present enrollment of 90 stu-dents. Jerry Bidlack arrived as conductor in 1967 and became Kinhaven’s Director in 1981. In 1990, the Junior Session for younger students was founded and directed by Nancy Bidlack. In 2004, Nancy became the Director of both the Junior and Senior Sessions.

2010 marked Nancy’s final year as Director of both sessions. Anthony Mazzocchi and Deborah Buck were chosen to run the Senior Session, and Sandy Dennis and Marty Knieriem directed Junior Session. Our new leaders are long-term Kinhaven faculty, and are superlative choices to ensure the growth of Kinhaven Music School.

Piano WorkshopMay 31 – June 5, 2012The Kinhaven Piano Workshop, for musicians who have graduated from high school, was initiated by Leander Bien in 1994. This program focuses on piano four-hand literature.

Chamber Music WorkshopJune 13–17, 2012The Kinhaven Chamber Music Workshop is for musicians who have graduated from high school. It began in 1993 with Mary Watt as its Director.
