Executive Summary

This document is intended to define the vision for the Flash game Ketchup. This docu-ment will summarize the basic ideas and design objectives as well as the game’s first features.

What is Ketchup?

Ketchup is a fun, silly, and intriguing take on a classic idea, while at the same time re-minding players of the product it’s advertising. People will tell their friends to try this game, thus getting more attention to Heinz Ketchup.

Creative Brief

Background

Ketchup is a modified version of the old video game named Sea Wolf. While the con-cept of the original was that a submarine would attempt to sink ships speeding across the surface of the water, this version will be set in a diner, and users will attempt to squirt Heinz Ketchup on plates as they whiz across the counter.

Target Audience

Ketchup’s primary audience will be young people ages 10-35, and therefore will be made to be appropriate for all age groups. It’s expected to appeal most to young people and those who enjoyed playing old video games, or casual gamers.

Objectives

Ketchup is intended to be silly and fun. The game should be enjoyable enough such that people will want to show it to others, but ultimately, the product it is advertising should be clear.

The Message

“Heinz Ketchup is fun.”

Media

The game itself will be written in Flash. Graphics will be made in Photoshop or Illustra-tor. Also includes sound.

Creative Considerations

Sound will be a large part of this game, and it should be designed to make the user laugh. Also, the Heinz logo should be made clear and easily recognized.

Game Summary

Gameplay Description

The game consists of infinite levels of regularly increasing difficulty. A ketchup bottle is featured at the top of the screen which the user has the ability to use back and forth. It points downward at the counter below. Ketchup made be squirted only when there is no other dollop traveling through the air, and therefore timing becomes essential. Food slides across the counter at random. The user must hit so many food items before the timer runs out. As the game progresses, each level becomes more and more frenetic. Also, if the player misses the food, ketchup dollops remain on the counter. Each food item may only be hit once.

Game Specifications

The game will require Flash 8 (Flash MX) and will be written entirely in Actionscript .0.

Game Objectives

The goal of each item is to hit some number of food items with ketchup before the timer runs out.

Navigation and Interface Features

The game will have instruction screens, as well as win/lose and game starting screens. The game itself has a single control of moving the ketchup to aim and clicking the mouse to squirt ketchup. During gameplay, the level number, score, time left, and num-ber of items needed to be hit to win will all be displayed.

Detail Art and Animation Ideas

The game will prominently feature the color red, and the images will be made from pho-tos, so that the Heinz Ketchup bottle can be prominently featured. Again, sound will be a large part of the game, feature a wide variety of silly or amusing sounds.

Competitive Analysis

Space Invaders(http://www.thepcmanwebsite.com/media/flash_space_invaders/)Space Invaders is a classic game, with a somewhat similar gameplay to our proposed idea. The major differences are that its targets are on the screen at all times, and you must destroy them all in order to pass the level.

Sea Wolf (http://www.syndicatesdomain.co.uk/index.php?page=play_game&id=25)A version of the original sea wolf game. The major difference is that it is not themed to feature our product.

Hatch(http://www.eyezmaze.com/hatch/v0/index.html)Hatch is another Flash game, again similar in gameplay. In it, you must “catch” falling targets. It features a particularly whimsical art style.

User Scenarios

Angela Jones, age 10

Angela lives with her mother and father in their middle-income home in the suburbs. She goes to school every day, and when she comes home she usually watches TV, and sometimes her mother helps her look at her favorite internet websites.

Right now, she’s not allowed to surf unsupervised, but, like any 10 year old, she’s quick to learn, and she can be very skilled at using the computer for her age.

Scenario

One afternoon, Angela comes home from school, and asks her mother if she can visit her favorite website so she can play some games. It just so happens that her favor-ite website sometimes features sponsored Flash games, and recently, they have added Ketchup to their games list.

Behavior

Angela decides to try out the game. The controls are simple, so even she can play through a few levels, and she gets a kick out of the silly sounds it makes. She decides to show the game to her school friends when they next come to visit.

Lori Johnson, age 19

Lori is a pretty typical college student. She’s majoring in English, so she spends lots of time on the computer researching, writing papers, and also to have fun and take breaks. She also has a part time job at a sandwich shop. Like any college girl, she loves hang-ing out with her friends in her spare time. Sometimes they’ll just sit and chat, other times they’ll go out to the movies, or head to a party.

Since Lori has to spend so much time working with the computer, she’s gotten really good at what’s considered basic tasks, such as using home applications, e-mail, and surfing the web.

Scenario

Lori’s in the middle of a research paper one day when she decides she needs a break. She checks out her e-mail to see that one of her buddies sent her a link to the Flash game Ketchup. Lori decides to check it out.

Behavior

The game gives her a good laugh, and helps her cool down for a few minutes. She de-cides to forward the link to her friends list, so her other friends can get a good laugh as well.

Sally Smith, Age 42

Sally is a working mom with two kids in high school. She’s got a busy schedule, but she still finds the time to talk with her kids and her husband, and some quiet time for her-self. When she gets home from work, she usually sits down to watch the evening news, and afterwards gets on the internet to check her e-mail and perhaps visit a couple of her favorite websites.

Although she isn’t particularly computer-savvy, she can get around. She generally ends up asking her kids for help when she’s got a problem she doesn’t know how to fix.

Scenario

One day, when she gets home from work, she finds one of her kids playing Ketchup on the computer. The game looks intriguing to her.

Behavior

Sally asks her kid to let her have a chance at the game. She plays it for a few minutes, and bookmarks it for later use. Later she decides to point it out to some of her e-mail contacts so they can get a look too.
