Welcome to September!
After a busy August, you would think we might slow down a bit to
catch our breath. Not a chance! So far we have 11 events planned
in September. That’s 11 different networking opportunities for
our members to take advantage of – morning, noon and night –
many of which are collaborative efforts with other Chambers in order to broaden
your circle of influence and grow your businesses.
Ribbon Cuttings & Business After Hours R Us – So far, there are 4 KACC Ribbon
Cuttings and 3 Business After Hours scheduled for September. We are excited to help
our members celebrate grand openings, anniversaries, and a name change:
thSeptember 6 – Campus Wine Cellar thSeptember 12 – AxessPointe Community Health Center thSeptember 26 – MadCap Brew Co. thSeptember 28 – Apple Growth Partners
If your busy schedule permits, please support your fellow
KACC members and stop by and help them celebrate. The
Business After Hours are listed on our website calendar, as well
as on the KACC Facebook page. If you plan to attend, PLEASE
as a professional courtesy register so our hosts can plan accordingly.
THANKS also to the nearly 30 businesses that participated in
this year’s Discover Downtown - Welcome KSU Students
event. Over 3,000 incoming freshmen visited the shops,
restaurants and businesses/organizations set up in Hometown
Bank Plaza, acclimating themselves with their new home away
from home. Thanks for helping us put out the Welcome to
Kent welcome mat!
As always, we appreciate your continued support of the KACC
and all of the events we plan for you – our members!

The Kent Area Chamber of Commerce is a non-profit organization dedicated to its members, their growth and success, and the economic development of the

The KACC also has a neutral position on any individual in public office.
As many know the Jaycees own and meet in the Marvin Kent train
car in downtown Kent. But do you know that recently many people
from all over the country stood in a long line just to take a picture
in front of it?
At the end of July, Main Street Kent magically changed our city for
Kent's Potterfest into scenes from the beloved Harry Potter series
by J.K. Rowling. Our train car became the Hogwarts Express and
was one of the places that people could come and take photos,
and they did! We would periodically go through the line
reminding people this was not a long line to get INTO the train car,
but to only take a picture OUTSIDE by the decorations we simply
taped on the train. People still stood waiting their turn in elaborate
costumes.
As I stood there taking picture after picture, I started to think
about how people could take a picture in front of this train car
anytime of the year, and how we kind of look at life in a similar way.
We wait to be asked to do something, or hope for the perfect
timing, or don't venture somewhere until there is another reason
to go.
As a Jaycee I have learned we do not need to wait or be invited to
join into things, we just simply need to take the initiative. I am
proud to be a part of a group who does this in our community.

Journalism and Mass Communication has
an opportunity for your business to
benefit from...and it’s FREE!
The advertising sequence at Kent State runs a course called
Research & Measurement, where the students select a real-
world client for a semester and develop a series of client-driven
objectives (a research brief). Next, they match research methods
to explore the objectives, such as qualitative methods (focus
groups, interviews, ethnographic research, etc) and quantitative
methods (surveys, content analysis, etc).
Finally the students present their findings to the client in week
15. The findings will also include recommendations to engage
audiences (such as awareness, new business ideas, etc).
Past clients include Tree City Coffee, The Akron Symphony and
Kent State Basketball.
If you are interested in participating and helping the students
with their required projects, contact Evan at [email protected] -

Hometown Bank Brings
Cyber Security Roadshow to Kent
Hometown Bank has partnered with Ohio Attorney General's office, SBS Cybersecurity and the Ohio Bankers League to thbring a cyber security roadshow to Kent on September 18 . The roadshow will give consumers and business owners the
tools to combat the recent uptick in cyber fraud that has targeted Ohioans.
“Cyber criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated,” commented Scott Mikula, (VP - Hometown Bank) “The recent
WannaCry and Petya ransomware assault were the largest cyber-attacks in the world to-date and impacted businesses and
consumers everywhere. This session will give the Portage County area community the tools to protect themselves, their
accounts, and their data.”
The roadshow is free to attend and will explore current trends in cybercrime, the evolution of ransomware and cyber
extortion and best practices for managing cyber risk.
It will specifically focus on:
Why businesses are a growing target for cybercriminals
Which steps consumers should consider to safeguard their data and accounts
And, what resources are available to customers for outside help
Panelists will be available for informal questions after the panel session ends.
Doors open to this free event at 5:00, with the seminar running from 6:00 - 8:00 pm at The Kent American Legion's
Underwood Hall, 1945 Mogadore Rd., Kent.
