MEN'S CLUB ANNUAL DINNERTO MARK 21st YEAR
"Coming of Age in the Men's Club"will be the theme of the group's an¬nual dinner to be held on Mondayevening, January 18, 1960.
The annual dinner is always a won¬derful affair. The chance for men to
gather and see each other under finesocial circumstances makes this event
a most popular one.
This year, the dinner will featurethe honoring of those who have beenmembers for the twenty one yearsof the club's existance. An interestingprogram is being planned in thisconnection. The exact details will haveto remain a secret until January 18th.
The guest attraction will be LouNorman, an outstanding humorist whocaptivated the audience at the Nation¬al Association of Men's Clubs Conven¬tion last May.
The co-chairmen for the affair are
Martin Markson and Dr. Jack Lieber-man. They will be happy to receiveyour reservations for the dinner in ad¬vance. The cost is still ten dollars, a
price which has remained uninflatedfor several years while the dinner hasbeen considerably expanded.
Rabbi Joseph H. Lookstein, who willhave returned by that time from Israel, will, as usual, highlight the program. We expect the Annual Dinner to be awonderful occasion. Please reserve
the date.

DR. HENRY RAPHAELSISTERHOOD - MEN
A capacity crowd filled the socialhall of the synagogue last Tuesdayevening to listen to one of the moststimulating addresses ever presentedto a meeting of either the Sisterhoodor the Men's Club.
Perhaps the outstanding talk wasdue to the fact that this was a combinedmeeing of both groups. More likely, the success of the speech was the re¬sult of the personality, acumen, andeloquence of our speaker, Dr. HenryRaphael Gold.
Dr. Gold, whose educational back¬ground ranges from the Yeshivoth inEastern Europe, to the classrooms ofsociology and philosophy at ColumbiaUniversity, and culminates in the medi¬cal and psychiatric programs of Bay¬lor University, drew on this broadsweep of intellectual accomplishmentto analyze the subject: "Modern Psy¬chiatry and the World of Faith".
Our speaker began by asserting thatpsychiatry can never replace religion, nor can religion usurp the domain ofpsychiatry.
He went on to discuss the unique¬ness of the mind as separate from thehand, of thought as distinguished fromdeed. Man can perform only one act,but he can entertain several conflict¬ing wishes at the same time.
In a beautiful analogy, Dr. Gold ex¬plained that "Tephilin" illustrate theforegoing thesis admirably. The phy¬lacteries on the arm are in one piece, reflecting the fact that a man can actat one time only in one way. The head
GOLD ADDRESSESS CLUB MEETINGphylacteries, on the other hand, arecomposed of four individual compart¬ments, illustrating the ability of themind to entertain a variety of thoughtsat any given moment. Our lecturer discussed several man¬
ifestations of abnormal religiosity. Fan-atacism exists, said he, when the over¬all goal of religion becomes relativelyobscured in the presence of an ex¬clusive preoccupatoin with details. Nar¬cissistic religion is present when manturns religion inward and, in the spiritof Voltaire's quip, makes God in man'simage.
Dr Gold dissented from the viewthat "religion is a mass neurosis"stemming from fear and guilt. He main¬tained that religion kills fear by sup¬plying the element of wonder, andsaid that religion's goal was not to re¬lieve symptoms but rather to enlargethe horizons of human life.
Rabbi Joseph H. Lookstein whousually differs with, punctuates, or en¬larges upon the remarks of the speak¬er, chose to do none of these thingsat this meeting. Instead he contentedhimself with asserting that our lecturerwas not only a source of information, but also a model for emulation. Dr.Gold represented in his manner, breadth of knowledge, and conviction,a man who could teach as much byexample as by instruction. Two hun¬dred listeners were witnesses whocould verify our rabbi's evaluation. Theevening was certainly a memorableone in every respect.
