Novar plc, the UK-based parent company of MK Electric, Ega, Trend, Gent,Brand-Rex, Friedland and many other famous brands has been the subject of a takeoverbid from American giant Honeywell.

The bid, worth some £800mn in cash, has been launched by Honeywell to secure theIntelligent Building division of Novar, considered by Honeywell to be the most attractivecomponent of Novar. Other divisions of Novar, cheque printing and aluminium extrusionsin the US, are to be divested in due course, according to Honeywells press release.

The Novar main board has agreed in principle to recommend this offer unconditionallyto its shareholders. At this stage, however, approval is in the process of being sought fromthe European Union competition authorities and, as of the publication date of this Newsletter, final agreement is still pending although fully expected by the end of March 2005.

At the time of going to press, it is envisaged that the Novar IBS companies would beintegrated into the Honeywell Automation and Controls Division which has global sales ofover $8bn per annum and employs some 40,000 people. If this is achieved, it is expectedto be a positive development for the future growth of KECs low-voltage electrical installationequipment, systems solutions and lighting business portfolio.

To cater for a growing number of special needs -particularly in the luxury hotel and VIP villa sectors - MK hasfurther developed its SpecialsSpecialsSpecialsSpecialsSpecials capability.

Recently this has included:

o Insignia Flat-Plate also in an Antique Bronzefinish (see 3 gang toggle switch plate - to right)

o MK Albany decorative range front plates in aBrushed Stainless Steel [BSS] finish, completewith matching rockers, and

o MK Aspect in a Brushed Bronze finish.

All of these have been specified and are being installed ina number of prestige projects in the recent past as well asfuture projects including the upcoming Capitol TowersHotel in Dubai.

These special finishes, when coupled with MKs capability inspecial products such as card entry switches and the multi-aperture and function Insignia plates (introduced in the lastedition of KEC Newsletter and designed for hotel and hospitalinstallations), confirm the scope MK offers in meeting thosemore demanding specifications.

praise from specifiers and users alike for being a brilliantdesign in delivering protection to IP56.

Ingress protection (IP) is rated in terms of resistance todust and water entry. In the case of Masterseal, the productis protected against the ingress of sawdust, dust and othersmall particles such as sand and waterproof to strong jetsof water from any direction.

The latest addition of a 1 gang switched unit (MK 46486GRY or WHI) to complement the 2 gang switched unit alreadyavailable has been launched in response to specificrequests from the Middle East region and MK is currentlyworking flat out to meet some large priority orders.

Within a full range of switches, unswitched and switchedBS sockets, German type sockets, RCD-protected sockets, data outlets, connection units and dusk-dawn switches, threecommon features prevail in the Masterseal line-up:

i. tough product enclosures,

ii. innovative approaches to sealing and

iii. a 20 year warranty (except electronic products - 10 years).

The gel seal on the sockets, which secures ingressprotection around the wiring cable, remains the most admiredfeature on these award-winning products. The gel is to a secretformula specially supplied to MK only and ensures Mastersealsockets are rated IP56 in use while some other products onthe market can only achieve this when NOT in use - just as anenclosure.

Masterseal is available in white or grey finish and can besurface or flush-mounted on special bezels.

Masterseal applications are numerous but we are alwaysinterested to hear of new ones. The latest we have heard aboutare data stations in greenhouses and power sockets in individualdog kennels. Have you an interesting one to tell us about?

Intelligent buildings is probably the most talked about subject in the low-voltageelectrical systems business today and the KEC Systems Solutions Team have been

building up actively their market credentials.....

Our overall KEC Systems Solutionsbusiness has grown tenfold over the past2-3 years courtesy of some major projectwins and we are continuing to invest in ourpeople and their skills - firm in the beliefthat we can continue to grow strongly in thisexciting area of our overall business byadding value and providing a first classservice - backed up by the technical andproduct development skills of Novar, explains Peter Woods, KECs ManagingDirector with specific responsibility for Salesand Marketing.

Interestingly, in comparison with the dayswhen we were just supplying andcommissioning Gent Fire Detection andAlarm systems, we are increasingly beingasked to design and quote for virtually acomplete package of:

""""" Security systems[including Access Control and CCTV]

""""" VA/PA as an integrated part of anoverall fire detection and alarm solution[to take into consideration the trendtowards high-rise buildings in Kuwait]

""""" Building Management Controls

""""" Data facilities and

""""" Nurse Call systems [in the medical sector]

Canny real estate investors have alsoincreasingly been catching on to the conceptof intelligent buildings and starting to gettheir minds around not only what cost benefitsthere might be but also what superior returnsthere could be.

Selling technology in the office, villa, apartment building or investmentproperty is a major potential sellingpoint but understanding the systemsavailable is not obvious to all. So thereis a major learning curve for some inthe industry.

Experience in the regionSystems technology is a field in which

our long-standing partners Novar plchave been particularly active with suchleading brands as Gent, Trend,Ackermann, VisiOprime and of coursein fibre and copper cable solutions, courtesy of one of the leading Europeandata systems players - Brand-Rex.

Systems expertise is exactly whatNovar offers to specifiers in the region.

Sheikh Issa Library & Conference Center, Bahrain

An example of a major regional projectis the Sheikh Issa Library, Bahrain [seeabove].

Overlay the trend towards integratedsystems and there Novar also now havean innovative edge in the form ofSytronics, an intuitive OPC-basedopen software interface solution thatprovides a single source of informationon all systems.

This software provides theintelligence that allows you to makeinformed decisions on your businessoperation/building, resulting in directcost savings and improved productivity- all of which lead to maximizedprofitability.

For the traveller arriving at an airport to his eventual departure on an aircraft, Novar providesthe systems to control the airport environment through which the traveller passes. Whetherits controlling the lighting and temperature to create a comfortable atmosphere, designing

security systems to protect passengers and property or controlling the utilisation of ground servicesand passenger bridges, Novars systems enhance the performance of the infrastructure and theoperation of the airport.

HotelsThe hotel sector for example can ensure that guest

bedrooms are only air conditioned, ventilated or heated to comfortlevels when occupied, by integratingthe hotels booking system with theHVAC system. The benefit here isobviously a reduction in wastedenergy which will lead to costsavings for the hotel - and hopefully- a satisfied guest.

Integration of the Access Controlsystem to the hotel PMS (propertymanagement System) will ensurethat a single access control systemcan open the doors to a wide rangeof services with little intrusion to a guests privacy viz. a singledoor access card can be used to open the guests room doors, open a mini-bar, pay for restaurant bills, open doors to thepool area, the gym etc.

PrivacyFilters in CCTV cameras can ensure that the guests faces

are blocked out as well as other areas within the hotel tomaintain the privacy of visitors at the same time maintainingthe required level of security. These filters can be removed bya higher authority for evidential purposes etc.

A unified communication backbone architecture will offerthe operators a greater flexibility in running the hotel. Ballroomsand restaurants can be re-configured at a moments notice, locations of POS/KOT terminals. Entertainment centers,lighting/Music/AV controllers can be relocated anywhere withinthe facility effortlessly.

Facades, water features, lighting and other devices can becontrolled automatically to offer a seamless functioning.Specials effects for events can be programmed and be usedat the time of need, thereby offering quicker response timesand more satisfied guests. A lighting layout for weddingreceptions, corporate presentations/seminars, parties etc. canbe pre-programmed into the system and can be recalled duringan event to offer a professional service to the guests.

Detailed building statistics reports can be generated to allowthe operators to fine-tune their operations to ensure increasedprofitability and better resource management and allocation. For instance, the load consumption in various kitchens can bemonitored to tally with the meal sales and thereby betterutilisation of the kitchens can be arrived at.

Use of asset tracking devices will allow the hotel operatorsto keep track of all assets such as trolleys, Electrical/ElectronicEquipment, Housekeeping equipment etc. within thepremises. The asset racking system can also be used tokeep track of the status/maintenance logs of these equipmentsto ensure longer productive life for these equipments and bettercomfort for the guests.

Smart Hotels will be provided with a so-called redundantbackbone network with a technology lifespan of about 25 years. This backboneoffers the owners the capability to start witha technology such as ITV and progress onto technologies such as Asynchronous TVand HDTV as they become commerciallyavailable. It will also allow the owners toupgrade to a 5.1 audio and digital audiostreaming to each room at a fraction of thecost. Advanced communications systemssuch as IP phones will offer a simple wayfor the customers to interact with theservices of the hotel.

To compare the prices of two categories of product asdifferent as traditional Cables and Busbars, it is

necessary to make some preliminary considerations basedon actual cases, particularly as regards calculating the actualcost of installation. Clearly the price of cable depends on theprice of the raw materials. Here we have taken the price ofcopper as 4700 lire per kilo. Busbars are quoted as if theyrefer to an offer for an end user of average importance forbuilding a medium-size system. Installation prices forbusbars, cables and cable ducts are calculated as theaverage of prices provided by several major companiesdealing in wiring installations.

BusbarsBusbarsBusbarsBusbarsBusbars

A busbar is defined by IEC EN 60439-2 as a type testedassembly (TTA) comprising a system of conductors

with one or more bars separated and supported by insulatingmaterial and contained in a conduit or similar casing.Zucchini busbars are assemblies that have been type-tested(TTA) and comply with IEC 439/1 and IEC 439/2 productstandards and the corresponding harmonized Italianstandards IEC EN 60439-1 and IEC EN 60439-2. Here, fromamong the vast range of Zucchini busbars we have selectedthe series of Armoured Ventilated Bars (AVB) for places notrequiring a high short-circuit current and where there are nomajor problems of space, and the Super Compact (SC) linewhere a high short-circuit current, compact size and a highdegree of protection (IP55) are required.

Power CablesPower CablesPower CablesPower CablesPower Cables The sizing of power cables must be done very carefully.

They must be built according to IEC 20-14, IEC 20-22/2 and IEC 20-37 product standards.

The capacity of the cables is greatly affected by the type ofinstallation, which determines the effectiveness of heatdissipation, and reactance depends on their reciprocal position.Application factors for the different types of installation, particularly for close grouping as in our example, are takenfrom Table C, IEC 64-8, part 5, 4th edition. This comparisononly takes into account cables laid in perforated ducts, whichensure good ventilation and hence good heat dissipation.

COMPARATIVE STUDYNote that IEC 64-8 considers cables as laid in the air if at

least 30% of the surface of the tray supporting them isperforated. At present the only tray on the market meeting theserequirements are the wire type. The cables used in thiscomparison are PVC insulated, which means the copper theycontain can withstand temperatures of up to 70°C. For reasonsof cost, ease in procuring materials and assembly, we decidednot to use multi-pole cables greater than 185 mm2 or single-pole cables greater than 240 mm2.

Comparison of power supply costs for amedium-size metal working company.

Transformer low-voltage switchboard connection

The cost of connecting the transformer and switchboarddepends mainly on two factors:

1. the rated power of the transformer 2. the wiring layoutTo make a reliable cost estimate, it is necessary to consider

actual routing. Let us examine two typical situations:

In the first exampleWe have a connection between a transformer and a low-

voltage switchboard that is short and straight(see Figure 1 on page 11).

Sizing of the wiring system starts by calculating the powerrequired to run the factory in question. When calculatinginstalled power, it is necessary to consider the contemporaryload coefficient, the utilization coefficient, the average cost ofloads, and a convenient upscale coefficient taking into accountpossible extension to the system. When the installed powerhas been calculated, you can select the most suitable size oftransformer for the factory.

Now, presuming that the link between the transformer andlow-voltage switchboard is short and straight, we can provethat the cost depends only on the power of the transformer.

Typical factory with power distribution and a lightingsystem comprised entirely of busbars.

Zucchinis Simon Boutros and hiscolleagues at Zucchini Italy, provide an

insight with the following comparative study

Figure 1: Straight connection between transformer and low-voltage switchboard, 1)transformers; 2) busbar; 3) low-voltage switchboard.

The graph in Figure 1 shows the cost ratio between connectionsbusbars and the traditional but often obsolete method usingpower cables. Taking the cost for cable connection as 100, wecan see for each size of transformer that the cost of a cableconnection increases with the size of transformer, and cost parity(materials plus installation) is reached for a 1000 kVA transformer.

In the Second exampleComplex connection between three transformers and

low-voltage switchboard. (Figure 2)

Let us suppose that for reasons of system reliability andflexibility that the factory has decided to install three transformersand the connection between transformers and switchboard hasat least two horizontal, rather than straight, angles.

In the second example here, the cost ratio between connectingwith busbars and cables has a similar trend to the previousexample, but cost parity is reached for smaller transformers (seeFigure 2 above).

The problems in connecting a bundle of cables and thetransformer terminal and switch versus a busbar are highlighted(see Figure 3 below).

Designing a wiring system in a 15-storeyoffice block

Let us suppose we have to design a wiring system in a15-storey office block and we need to power utilities

rated at 45kW. All the floors are supplied via a single shaft. Each floor needs a control panel with a knife switch and fuseholder (or a thermal magnetic circuit breaker) to protect andcut off the system for the entire floor. In our example, theswitchboard supplying the various floors via the shaft is not inthe immediate vicinity of the shaft, it is about 30 metres fromthe base of it.

This means three different systems can be considered:1. The entire system can use busbars, i.e. link the

switchboard-shaft and the 15-floor riser using a prefabricatedsystem of busbars.

2. Alternatively, the low-voltage switchboard and the riserpower supply box can be connected using busbars with abundle of suitably sized cables and the riser alone usingbusbars.

3. Lastly, the entire system can be laid with power cables. This means that the same number of bundles of cables asfloors in the building will have to run from the switchboard andeach bundle will have to run up the shaft vertically, stopping at

its own floor, so the number of bundles decreasesthe further up you go (see Figure 6).

Now let us examine the advantages anddisadvantages of these three solutions.

Busbars

A study of the power for each floor shows that the

capacity of the busbar must be 1000 A. Where thebusbar leaves the low-voltage switchboard, it isprotected by a thermal magnetic circuit breaker. Asthe busbar runs the 30 metres to the shaft, it passesthrough the boiler and air-conditioning rooms andthen runs up the shaft vertically to the top floor (seeFigure 4 on page 8).

There is a tap-off at each floor to supply the utilitieson that floor. Flame barriers can be situated along

the shaft at the various floor levels to prevent the spread of fire, smoke and heat if a fire should break out on a lower floor.

Figure 4. Switchboard-transformer link using1000 A busbars powered at both ends.

Figure 5. Mixed cable/busbar link

Mixed cable/busbar layout

Figure 5 shows a mixed layout for the system supplying powerto the various floors in the building. It takes four 3 x 185/95 mm2multi-pole cables in parallel to supply the 1000A busbar riserwith a cable link. This bundle of cables connects with the busbarvia the switchboard at the front end.

To supply the riser, the cables too need to pass through theheating, cooling and ventilation rooms, so steps must be takento prevent toxic and corrosive gases from spreading through thebuilding from the air conditioning plant in the event of a fire.Alternatively, cables with a low emission of gas and toxic agentsmust be used.

Cable layout

Figure 6 shows the power supply to the various floors of thebuilding with a bundle of cables each from the switch-board toits own substation at each floor. The cables used are multi-pole,section 3 x 50/25 mm2. The switchboard needs to have as manycircuit breakers as the outputs (15), or alternatively the individualcables can be fused.

Flexibility of the different types of system

When calculating ratings, designers generally take intoconsideration a convenient upscale coefficient for future

extensions to the building. So with cables it will be necessaryto oversize all the systems cables at the outset. For obviouseconomic reasons, this coefficient will only take into account theprobability of a slight increase in load power. If the powerincreases excessively, the transformer supplying the buildingwill have to be replaced or paired with another transformer. Withthe use of busbars, later extensions do not involve manytechnical problems.

If we suppose that the absorbed power at each floor in thebuilding increases by about 10%, the power of the maintransformer is no longer enough to meet demands, so in thiscase the best technical and economic solution is to installanother transformer of a suitable capacity. The new transformerwill only have to be connected to the busbar from the top of theriser (top floor). Thus in this case it will only be necessary topass one cable along the shaft to supply the busbar on the otherside. This solves the problem easily and economically. (SeeFigure 4)

Let us now consider the more common case in which totalpower required by the building is constant, but division betweenthe floors varies. In the cable solution it is necessary to checkthat the various cables supplying the floors of the building canwithstand the new load and if necessary add another cable inparallel if the power exceeds the capacity of the cable. With thebusbar solution, this will not be necessary thanks to the flexibilityof the system. At most, it will be necessary to change theprotection device of the cable from the switchboard to the floorsubstation - only a few metres of conductor.

System cost comparison

When considering all the above factors and taking the cost ofa system made entirely of busbars as 100, the cost for a mixedcable/busbar set-up is equal to 125, whereas if the system ismade entirely with cables the overall cost is 108.

Technical comparisonbetween cables and busbars

Apart from strictly economic reasons that increasingly favourthe prefabricated solution as against the one to be wired

up, there are various advantages of the busbar version intechnical terms. The rated current that a cable can carry refers tothe average daily temperature of +30°C, whereas busbars -according to IEC 60439/2 - are sized to work at an averageambient temperature of +35°C, peaking at +40°C.

Cables or busbars? Cables or busbars? Cables or busbars? Cables or busbars? Cables or busbars? (continued)(continued)(continued)(continued)(continued)

Historically speaking, Zucchini S.p.A. committed itself to abusbar configuration that was not always appreciated for

its fundamental importance in the sizing of wiring systems. Inactual fact, Zucchini S.p.A.busbars are sized, tested andguaranteed fully operational ataverage daily temperatures of+40°C up to +45°C. This givesa 5% advantage over thecompetition and a 10% factorover cable.

Another advantage is the factthat cables are generallyinstalled in bundles and withsuch a cross-section that theycannot be bent tightly.Busbars, on the other hand, have a highly compactstructure and can achieveangles of up to 90° (see Figureto right).

Fire load is the energygenerated by the completecombustion of the flammablematerials in a room. The use of busbars involves a very low fireload which makes them ideal for areas where this factor is ofextreme importance.

The graph below shows how an increase in current means avirtually exponential increase in the fire load of the cables. In highcapacity busbars, the weight of plastic materials used is up to 1/10 that of cables of a similar capacity.

Another problem that designers have to tackle is that making ahigh power connection requires several cables in parallel. Threeconditions must be met to ensure that the current is divided equallybetween the cables - all the cables must be the same type, thesame length and laid in the same way. If any of these conditionsis not met, the cables cannot be considered the same and thusprotected by a single device. It is necessary to protect each cableindividually, for example by means of a fuse. Furthermore, whenlaying a bundle of cables it is necessary to anchor them properlyso that they can withstand the electro- dynamic forces that aregenerated in the event of a short circuit.

Lastly, when designing cable risers, it is important to size eachcable separately (15 in our example) by suitably protecting themagainst overloads and short circuits, calculating the voltage dropfor each and checking the earth fault conditions.

Cable Busbar

When sizing busbar risers, the designer only needs to makecalculations on a single riser, which reduces design times andcosts.

Busbars are the ideal way of connecting the transformer andthe switchboard. In this type of connection the decisive factor isthe short-circuit current that the busbar can withstand. Zucchinibusbars series SC withstand short-circuit currents (Icw) up to176 kA for one 1 second and 387 kA peak current without gettingdamaged. Due to the compact structure and the fact that theconductors are sandwich assembled, short-circuit currents inthe Super Compact can be withstood mechanically & thermallywithout damage.

Unlike cable connections, it is often not necessary to installadditional protection due to the short link between transformerand the low-voltage switchboard. The medium-voltage on theprimary circuit of the transformer also protects against short-circuiting and overloads on the low-voltage side, so it is oftensuitable for protecting the short link between transformer andswitchboard.

When laying large cables, their weight is often a problem anda hazard. It takes 4-8 men to pull them through the galleries andfix them in such a way that they can withstand the dynamic stressof short circuiting. In vertical installations particularly, where thereis a shaft, the cables need to be winched up to the relevant floor.Under these conditions, the cable has to bear its own weightand the insulation can get damaged by scratches, cuts andmicro-cracks that are not visible to the naked eye but may becomevisible later when the system is powered up, most likely affectingreliability. The installation of busbar risers, on the other hand, does not require more than 2 workers. As they are modular andrigid, the work can easily be carried out in limited space.

A further advantage of busbars with respect to cables is theirhuge operating flexibility. For example, once the power requiredby the various floor distribution boards has been calculated, itis not possible in a cable system to redistribute loads with thesame total installed power, whereas busbars are equivalent tohaving a distribution unit extending the entire length of thebuilding, which means it is easy to re-distribute the loads.

ConclusionAs busbars are compact and extremely versatile, they open

up new horizons in the design and installation of industrial, commercial and tertiary wiring systems. There are hugeeconomic and technical advantages in situations where thereis a high fire risk, since busbars are highly heat resistant andfeature a much lower fire load than cables of equivalent capacity. All the features described above should be taken intoconsideration when designing an actual plant.

Considering the enormous difference in technical andinstallation cost terms, a mere comparison between the cost ofcables and busbars per metre is not technically or economicallysignificant.

Last but not least, a busbar system has an intrinsic value thatwill never depreciate. If necessary it can easily be dismantledand re-installed in another building or part of the investmentcan be recovered at the end of the systems working life sincebusbars are mainly made of copper and steel, which maintaintheir value through time.
