P A S T , P R E S E N T , F U T U R E1Shutes Folly Island, located near Charleston, South Carolina, is a forgotten island. Home to the crumbling ruins of Castle Pinckney, its location in hurricane alley and overall shallowness above sea level doom it to continual neglect. This entry for the 2012 ACSA Preservation as Provocation seeks to span the length of the island with monumental structures to its past, present, and future.

---

Given the island’s location and current rise in sea level, Castle Pinckney is doomed to sink underwater.

By 2113, only the wind turbine will remain above sea level, as a monument to what once was on the island.

Castle

Respecting the natural processes of the castle, we intend to leave half of the interior alone. It is filled with different species of plants enjoying the protection of the castle. The roots of these plants are infiltrating the structure so that is why we are leaving the original castle walls, and building a brick facade replicating the original from the outside.

The other half of the castle will be scooped out and redesigned in the interior. Using the original archway, visitors can walk through and rent a segway or enter the belvedere.

The belvedere is a energy efficient structure that serves as a great lookout point 360 degrees around. This area of the island is designed to respect the history of the castle as well as giving opportunities for people to explore.

The new belvedere structure collects rainwater and funnels it down into a storage tank for later use in irrigating the landscape.

Over time, trees have grown over the castle, their roots penetrating deep into the walls. Half the castle is preserved as is.

The other half of the castle is restored and redesigned into an art exhibit. Using the original archway, visitors can walk through or enter the belvedere.

transportation

The aquatic center is for present day activities. A place where kayakers and land pedestrians can both interact near the water. This central part of the island is provoking and artistic to onlookers. Some components of it are that is partly underground, and is a shelter from hurricane surge.

Ferries, cruise ships, and other large-volume sources of aquatic transportation dock at Castle Pinckney, leaving their visitors to wander the routes of the island either by foot or by segway.

Local and other small water vessels have the option of docking northeast of the watersport center.

The tower too is divided into ribbons. In order to preserve the fantastic view of the ocean, all balconies angle towards an opti-mal view. The twists of the ribbons preserve privacy even in the corner condition, and minimize the tapering of balconies.

The panels require only one mold to form, as the same shape is repeated throughout the tower. They are formed from res-in-based composite polycarbonate reinforced with steel mesh.

C U L I N A R Y F L U X3No matter what the scale, cooking with other people in the same kitchen involves a complex dance of moving out of the way, being where one needs to be, and adjusting to various factors. Yet, though the product and players may change, the stage of the kitchen remains constant.

In this project, the atrium forms the stage, and the programmatic elements and circulation slide through and around it.

The structure seeks to engage and merge the pedestrian streams circulating the adjacent sidewalk and historic Highline with the students leaning within by rising from the ground to touch the Highline. Interactive programmatic elements like the demonstration kitchen and bake shop have also been located near the entrance points to promote mingling of academic and public visitors.

T E S S E L L A T ( 3 D )4A project exploring the use of the Grasshopper plugin in Rhino to not only generate a parametric tessellation, but to ease the process of fabrication.

Variation between pieces was created by varying the amount of hydrocal poured into the mould, thus varying the extrusion depth.

Grasshopper was used to control the amount of variations allowed for each piece, and also to note the location and total number of each type.

C A P A C I T Y5More people within a city means more life. But how much is too much?

The Capacity project presents research on the factors influencing the total number of people who could live in, commute to, or otherwise interact with downtown Los Angeles.

After intensive research, all factors considered were refined into use per person per day. In combination with an estimate of the total amount of a resource available, population capacity could be estimated.

In addition to a motion graphic video, an excel spreadsheet containing all rates found during the research phase. It further details the estimated population possible per resource.

location in lower Manhattan, Financial District

It's accepted that sunlight and greenery are generally good things to have down at street level. One look at cities like Irvine, with neatly planted trees lining almost every street and wide, wide streets, is proof enough.

On a policy level, it's part of the reason for the sprawl of the modern city, for the famously stepped back highrises of NYC at the turn of the century.1 In order to get more light down to the pedestrian, many towns have placed height limits on local buildings, and mandated setbacks and street widths but have kept the same solid box like form. Essentially, planners have solved the problem.

But is this the only solution? Or indeed, even the desired one? Solutions that utilize height limits and spacing of high rises advocate sprawl, which negates many of the typical benefits of urban living: pedestrian-friendly streets, critical mass for public transit, concentration of businesses.

About half the planet’s population currently lives in urban areas, and that population continues to grow. 2 It follows that if we wish to grow population, and also preserve low intensity and no intensity uses of land, more people must live on less land.

To answer how light plays into this scenario, it is necessary to do a quick, topical analysis of the American city street level. In a place like downtown Manhattan, where the high rises dwell, the street level is shaded for a good deal of the day. Save for noon and the hours directly adjacent, no ray of sunlight will ever strike pavement. So down at street level, the environs are freezing and barren of plant life. Quite unpleasant.

Contrast this with cases like 20 Fenchurch Street in London, designed by Rafael Viñoly. It features a gently curving glass facade, which, in the right conditions, focuses rays of the sun down upon the street in what can only be termed a Death Ray effect.3 Clearly, it is possible to bring sunlight and warmth down to street level through architecture. Imagine a more distilled version of this effect taking place in New York. In colder climates, there could be light and warmth, while in the summer, just the light.

The research involved in this thesis is straightforward. It seeks to bring the sunlight down to street level, and the architectural mechanisms by which such a task may be accomplished. The architectural portion of this thesis examines how high rise architecture may be affected by such schemes as applying those mechanisms to the buildings of downtown New York City, and also how new programmatic possibilities may be opened up at street level.

Let us begin.

At this stage in the process, program and and form remained vague. The only known factors in the design was the presence of light pipes. Developed by a company called Sunportal, light-emitting, specially coated have successfully been implemented at industrial scale at the Cheongpyeong Power Plant and POSCO Steel Plant. These applications channel light a little over 400 feet through dark, enclosed spaces. This iteration viewed the pipes as threading through the solid mass of building program.

An initial abstract material study was also carried out in order to further explore the use of tubes as light-transferring mechanisms.

[above, left to right] PROCESS: lighting study, material study, pre-assembly, post-assembly(vellum show)[on opposite page] finished product + lighting study

An entry for the 2013 Vellum furniture competition, SPINE continues to explore methods of channeling light. This lamp bounces light outward along perpendicular ribs rather than along its length (as experiment 2 did). In its final form, each half of the spiraling ribcage was each cut and folded from a single sheet of acetate. A strip of LED lights was looped around a twisting wire in order to create an inner core to which the ribs could be applied.

On a non-fabrication level, SPINE represents a playful approach to light. The ribs catch and reflect light as they twist around. The source is nothing special in an of itself, but the manner in which it is dealt with generates visual interest and inspires viewers to walk up and peer closer at the manner of its construction.

This definition translates the design concept into form fairly directly.

CONCEPT >> pipes drive design and affect overall formation of building

DEFINITION >> pipes enclose volume in which programmatic forms are randomly generated at each floor level

The next iteration consolidated the tubes back into a bundle, which surrounded the circulation core at the back of the building. This freed the facade, allowing ambient light to light the floorplates. Solar collectors were distributed across the surface of a leaf-like structure stretching over the roof.

Dali is a city with a long history, also known as “Famous town of Culture”. Between The Jade Er Hai Lake and the turquoise

mountains Cang, the natural scenery is breathtaking. Putting these scenic wonders together has given the area the descirption:

“Windy flowers and snowy white moon”. This includes the winds of Xiaguan, the flowers of Shangguan, the snows on the

Cang Mountain and the moon shape of Er Hai Lake.

When visiting Dali, you will learn the customs of the Bai minority, by joining their folk festivals, tasting their unique flavored

foods and being memorized by their folk handcrafts and handmade arts.
