Kentucky Association for Marriage & Family Therapy (KAMFT)
Served 1998 – 2003
President-Elect 1998 - 1999, President 2000 - 2002, Past President 2003
The President is the Chair of the Board of Directors, the official Division representative for the
profession and a member of the AAMFT National Council of Division Presidents. When elected
the president commits to a minimum of five years of service: president-elect for two years,
president for two years, past-president for one year. The president serves a multi-disciplinary
membership of 400+ mental health professionals all having licensure as MFTs.
Responsibilities:
• Manage the Leadership: governing board, lobbyist, administrative assistant
• Provide “on-the-job training” for President-Elect
• Facilitate the administration of by-laws, policies and other governing rules
• Assist nine active committee chairs with planning and resource allocation
• Assist committee chairs to work collaboratively with communications
• Assist treasurer in preparation of annual budget for the professional association
• Encourage working partnerships with legislators and other professional boards
• Help create, sustain and support the successful passage of bills that specifically
have a pro-children, pro-family, advance the profession agenda that strengthens
Kentucky’s families and allows equitable competition in the open market place
• Serve as a Division Liaison to the national organization (AAMFT)
• Represent Kentucky Division at AAMFT Council of Presidents
• Obtain grant support for the association’s legislative agenda
• Write regular monthly columns for KAMFT Newsletter
Board Accomplishments
• Revised By Laws which govern the professional organization
• Approved recommendation for annual staggered elections that would provide bal-
ance between new and experienced officers and board members.
• Created, drafted and obtained bipartisan sponsorship on Senate Bill 90 which has
successfully and unanimously passed through the KY legislature. The law effective
April 1, 2002 did the following:
• (a) Advanced family therapists, professional counselors and master’s level psychologists
and fee-based pastoral counselors by updating the definition of Qualified Mental
Health Professional to include all licensed mental health professionals.
(b) Increased opportunities for employment and insurance reimbursement in both public
and private mental health agencies.
The national leadership of AAMFT was enthusiastic and gave KAMFT top priority for
competitive grant dollars in support of our “unheard of” but “boldly doable” legislative
agenda. After securing the services of a former Kentucky Fried Chicken lobbyist, the
association’s Senate Bill for mental health parity passed the House and the Senate!
